..handbag?
If you do, what kind?
Are thye worth it?
If you don't, would you get one if you could afford it, or if someone wanted to buy you one as a gift?

no I wouldn't. Anything over 10 quid for some fabric to hold a few things is a total waste of money to me. And does anyone actually notice?

needmorecoffee · 31/10/2008 17:40

I don't own a handbag of any decription either. Key in pocket, money in pocket. Easy.
DD's nappys n stuff on back of her wheelchair.

I know what you mean nmc; I think anyone who does notice a designer bag usually assumes they are fakes
I've only ever bought cheap bags in Monsoon 70% off sale, but I'm wondering if top quality handbags are like top quality shoes.
I don't own either, but DH has said he'd like to buy me a designer handbag for Christmas, and I've forgotton my principles and been off ogling Marc Jacobs and Mulberry bags

OP posts:
needmorecoffee · 31/10/2008 17:50

I wouldn't be able to tell if a bag was from Sainsbo's or Harrods to be honest.
How could you tell if it was a 'marc jacobs'?

ilovemydog · 31/10/2008 17:56

I don't have a hand bag

I have a diaper bag

hf128219 · 31/10/2008 17:59

I have several - Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Prada

Love them all!

BloodyStranglingwithBling · 31/10/2008 18:00

I don't have a designer bag as such, but for my every day, look good to and from the office bag, I tend to buy "mini designers" ie a brand, but not a flash one. I like Tula bags which vary in price from about £100 - £200.

I do find they're better in quality - I bought a gorgeous monsoon bag over the summer which I loved, but which I've had to toss away, while last year's Tula bag has been removed from the drawer, spiffed up and is in use all over again.

It also does look good in terms of detailing etc and I think for bags on an everyday basis you can tell the difference a bit. But for super casual or fashion bags, it doesn't make a difference. And I have only very cheap "formal" bags - no one does a little sparkle like Accessorize!

flowerybeanbag · 31/10/2008 18:02

I have a few

They are all beautiful. My favourite is a Marc Jacobs one. You can tell. It's gorgeous and beautiful quality, I use it every day.

Not saying it's worth the staggering price tag DH paid, which I am too [blush to admit, but nice expensive bags are a lovely luxury if you get the chance.

flowerybeanbag · 31/10/2008 18:03

too

Sazisi · 31/10/2008 18:04

Well I couldn't tell (or maybe I can now I've been looking..they seem to have marc jacobs engraved on all the metal bits, or 'hardware' as I just discovered the handbag experts say )
It is all very shallow, no?
I think DH wants to treat me to something symbolic to show he sees me as more than a drudgey mum (because mostly I feel like a drudgey mum). He is a good gift-buyer and I don't want to discourage him

OP posts:
needmorecoffee · 31/10/2008 18:06

I'm sorry. Just sat and looked at pics of 'designer' bags with eye watering prices. They just look like bags to me. Nothing special and some are quite ugly.
And an armani bag or a Gucci bag looks like something you can buy in any old shop in town.
If DH bought me a handbag I'd belt him round the head with it!!!
And who could be faffed with moving all your bits from one bag to the next!

Sazisi · 31/10/2008 18:07

Last post was to nmc btw!

ilovemydog, my most expensive bag is the skiphop!

flowerybeanbag...interesting! Is it blake bag????

My MIL has a gorgeous buttery Mulberry bag, which was about £300. Personally, we can't afford that sort of money for a bag (or even 10% of that!), and not sure I could justify it anyway. Would rather put £300 towards a holiday or a new car, which we really need. My most expensive bag was £12 in Next. I tend to pick them up second-hand normally, or on Ebay.

Sazisi · 31/10/2008 18:11

I was molesting a buttery Mulberry bag the other day, it did feel lovely. It was 800+ euros
But it did feel lovely.

missblythe · 31/10/2008 18:18

I have a couple of Mulberry bags, and a J&M Davidson one. I love them.

The leather is lovely, they are all more than 3 years old (all pre-DD purchases) and have got better and better with age.

Before I had them, I used to regularly spend about £50-100 for a bag that might last a year, then would look so tatty that I'd need to replace it.

I can't see me needing a new bag for years. Wanting, yes, but not needing.

needmorecoffee · 31/10/2008 18:31

i don't.

but i'd love one .

one of my best pals WON a Prada bag from a magazine competition.

it's still going strong.

i remember when it was delivered.

even he box smelled gorgeous.

she took it up and put it on her table in the kitchen and we just stared at it.

ilove · 31/10/2008 18:47

I love my Radleys, but I only get the "picture" ones, and only have two...I'd love more though! They were about £160 each.

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 31/10/2008 18:48

Have a few gorgeous ones, Mulberry, DKNY and Cocinelle, bought pre-children days. Couldn't afford it now

judgenutmeg · 31/10/2008 18:49

My sister used to work for Mulberry and would pass on all her cast-off bags. I never realised that they were 'nice' and used to put them in the charity bag.

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 31/10/2008 18:51

Meant to say in answer to the OP (got carried away by thinking about the gorgeous bags themselves ) yes the quality is much better than cheap ones. The newest one is a couple of years old (Mulberry) and is improving with age.

expatinscotland · 31/10/2008 18:52

my mother's sister has a Kelly bag purchased for her by her fifth husband.

it's a beautiful caramel colour and she's had it for about 20 years.

it's soooooooo gorgeous.

lulalullabye · 31/10/2008 18:53

Thats the price of a house is it not expat
