Has brown become too dominant in style and beauty shops lately

Hi while I like brown its everywhere now. Blazers all brown in shops. I love burgundy but brown in everything. Do others like it.

It's the one colour I would never ever wear.

Dark chocolate brown is on trend right now (as burgundy was in autumn 2024 - there's still a lot of it around). I like it in accessories like bags, boots, and belts, especially in suede but for me a whole brown suit (for example) feels a bit much. I'm warm toned so I find that I only look decent in browns with golden, yellow, peach, orange etc. undertones, especially near my face or hands. Cool-toned brown with grey or black mixed in makes me look dead. But I have a similar problem with burgundy - cherry red, garnet, or claret looks great but true classic burgundy drains me. Not crazy about brown lipstick or blush on me although brownish pink or brownish red can be nice.

I don't see the point in associating brown with faeces (which isn't even a consistent, specific shade). You could just as easily eschew green because of mildew or yellow because of urine or red because of acne.

My school uniform was brown (and yellow - so awful) but I still like brown and wear it a lot. Think the key is finding a shade that suits you - I’m soft autumn, so muted and edging towards warm. I do very well with rosy browns - often called bois de rose/rosewood or similar. A knitting company I like did a good instagram post on this recently - I’ll see if I can link it.

The shops are also full of knitwear and not much in way of shirts or blouses either - M&S particularly disappointing !

I noticed the abundance of knitwear too. I can't wear anything with the slightest percentage of wool and don't like cheaper stuff that loses its shape so I'm stuffed.

If you add barrel/carrot/wide legged trousers into the mix, I won't be adding to my winter wardrobe this year.

FlappyFish · Yesterday 18:48

I won’t wear brown. I agree with so many others that it just makes me think of poo.

CheeseNcrackerz · Yesterday 18:48

Ugh yes. I’m a light summer and finding clothes shopping really depressing at the moment. I don’t really like my colours anyway but I feel like everything is black, brown or bright red. So depressing.

I’m also sick of crew necks. Bring back the v neck please.

It does suit some of us you know…I loathe the pastels of summer and blue is probably my very worst colour (makes me look deceased), different people suit different colours.

I don't think anyone is denying that - it's just the huge dominance of brown, brown and more brown, and how long this trend has been going on.

Sunbringer · Yesterday 19:46

It’s autumn. Happens every autumn.

Magicpaintbrush · Yesterday 19:59

I miss winter jewel colours - plum, teal, mustard, cobalt etc. Brown has it's place but I don't want to wear it every bloody day.

No, it’s definitely been a Brown Year

Mary46 · Yesterday 20:15

Yes just alot of it. My daughter wore it with denim very nice. Hoping some red or something else in shops soon!

As a blue eyed blonde with pale skin, it just looks too harsh on me - like black - the contrast is too much. It’s a shame though as i think with the right fabric (cashmere, suede, silk, denim leather) it can look really nice on those with dark brown hair.

I think the problem is that there’s a tidal wave of brown acrylic clothes in the shops at the moment and they do look like shit.

CortieTat · Yesterday 20:23

I don’t mind at all, I quite like all earthy colours and usually wear either some shades of brown or grey instead of black.

Buying new clothes every season is absolutely not compulsory, it’s fine to just wait the autumnal colours out.

ILoveKits · Yesterday 20:25

As a summer, I can't wear it at all. However I have bougjt a Seasalt tweedy coat with shades of burgundy and pick. I"ll wear a deep pink scarf with it.

Lifeomars · Yesterday 20:29

It was my school uniform colour and therefore a non colour to me. i have never worn or owned anything brown since the many decades I left shool. Detest it.

Same! And I was a Brownie. It doesn’t suit me anyway but I fucking hate it!

(Sorry for posting twice in the same thread!)

putitonthewrongway · Yesterday 20:41

I’m so glad brown is around as black and white don’t suit me and it always seems that everything “neutral” is either black or white.

MyManinCaracas · Yesterday 20:44

I love brown; it and navy are my black. But too much of anything breeds resentment.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · Yesterday 20:46

I'd never choose to wear brown, it's just not my thing and doesn't suit me.

BitOutOfPractice · Yesterday 20:49

I don’t like brown and brown doesn’t like me. I’m ignoring it but it is hard as it’s everywhere.

Autumnalhibernationisthedream · Yesterday 20:50

I bought a soft dark brown hoodie that looks a lot classier than black for everyday wear but yes I don’t get everything being brown!!!

Gettingbysomehow · Yesterday 20:52

I love these colours in nature but on me they look like hot garbage. The only autumn colour I look great in is cobalt blue.
