Just pondering really.
Why do so many British women dye their hair blonde?
As opposed to other nations such as Italians or French women?
I see so many women with dark roots and yellowing hair. It’s so obviously dyed. Yet when I travel to say France, the women there are more likely to stick to a natural look. Dying their hair brown rather than blonde if they do dye it
I don’t think you can say it’s because British women have blonde hair because it so obviously isn’t blonde!
Do people think they look better, with black roots? Just because you might have been blonde as a child doesn’t mean you are now.
To be fair I have dyed my hair blonde in the past. Looking back I don’t think it really suited me, made me look washed out and pale.
It was definitely of a time where blonde hair, blue eyed, white, thin women were considered the beauty standard.

It’s a status symbol, it means you have money to keep going to the hairdresser so it’s associated with looking good.

Like that stupid money piece/ scandi hairline trend that was all over instagram, it will grow and look shit in 5 minutes so you have to keep going back.

Because I have grey roots and highlights don’t show the root growth as much as using a dark colour.
I let my grey hair grow out during Covid and kept it for about four years. It aged me terribly, so now I have half a head of highlights and feel much better.

I dye my hair red - do you want to pass your unnecessary, unpleasant judgement on me?

I have brownish mousey hair. I started getting my hair blonde so that I could get my hair with some vibrant fashion colours. Which I loved.

I left the fun colours behind but I am keeping the blonde. Usually I get full head of highlights every 6 months and half head in between every 3 months. Timewise it's anything from 1 hour 50 minutes to 2.5 to 3 hours depending on length of my hair.

I love my hair appointments because it's just a small block of time every few months where I get to step away from everything and have someone else look after me for once. Life outside of my appointments can often get so bad. I like sitting down in my hairdressers chair, bringing my knitting and let him look after me for those few hours. I love going to my hair dresser because he is so flamboyant too and he makes me feel so great.

for me personally blonde was popular growing up I hated my natural hair colour always loved the dark hair and dark skin combo but I was blessed with neither 🤣 as I’ve grew older I’ve gradually went darker and thinks it suits me so much better , I think the blonde can age certain people and make them look a bit mutton dressed as lamb , I was one of those people haha

as I’ve got older my confidence has grew too and other peoples opinions just don’t matter anymore , some people never feel comfortable in there own skin so sometimes you just have to embrace it

Beyond all of the "because they want to" which is perfectly reasonable... English women typically have paler skin tones than many other European women. Going darker can make them look washed out. That may well play a part. Plenty of women with mousey-brown hair who wouldn't suit dark hair but chuck in some blonde for vibrance. As the hair grows, the blonde makes the mousey brown look quite dark but it isn't, really. It's just the contrast.

God what a stupid post. Surely you can figure out why women want to dye their hair any given colour? Or is this just obvious ragebait?

This post is borderline racist the way you're so nasty about it tbh, could you imagine if this post was about literally any other race dying their hair blonde and how bad they look doing it? LOL

That depends on your race, she seems to only like attacking white British women specifically.

I think as many women dye their hair brunette and red as dye it blonde, but the grow-out may just be more noticeable. I’ve never tried blonde - mainly because I wouldn’t suit it, but because I can’t bear the visible regrowth and the maintenance it would need (plus the potential damage to my hair from bleaching or the extortionate cost of maintaining it, given today’s salon prices!)

It's definitely the mousy thing in part as many have pointed out.

My hair isn't naturally super horrible but is naturally quite a flat colour, the darker end of mousy. If it were naturally a richer or darker colour I might be very happy with that (although who knows because insidious and overly narrow beauty standards seem to leave most people feeling bad about their looks, even when to me they are totally stunning, so it's possible I'd feel unsatisfied with any hair that nature could possibly have given me!).

I let my hair grow out as its natural colour during my twenties after outgrowing some bad diy blue / purple / pink DIY hair jobs as a teenager (still love those colours but I never committed to the maintenance and didn't fit well with the career I wanted either). Kept it that way for several tears. Loved how low-maintenance it was but it also always felt to boring. Even some friends said so and suggested highlights to me when I was having a 'meh about my appearance' moment.

I've since taken the plunge and gone blondish. I like to go lighter rather than darker because it makes it easier to make changes to the shade, whereas darker dyes are hard to lift, and also because it doesn't show up my greys as much. I personally think dark hair or red hair is the loveliest but blondish suits me ok. I don't mind the dark roots - I tell myself I'd rather have 'drama hair' than 'natural hair'. I don't intend to fool anyone.

You may be lucky enough to have the right complexion for any colour hair but many English don't. I'd love a different colour but blonde is the only thing that works with my pale grey face and mousey hair 😔

?? People with blue hair don’t expect you to think it’s natural blue and those who dye their hair blonde are not normally trying to pretend it’s natural. It’s the aesthetic they prefer just because, no explanation needed.

There is a specific orangey dark blonde that is pretty ubiquitous amongst French women of a certain age.

I have boring mousey hair, it's awful. Not lovely Italian dark, rich hair, but terrible flat not-quite-brown dull. I look so much better blonde!

It looks perfect for the first 3 weeks after being done, then OK for about a week, then I have to suffer a further 2 weeks of dark roots and slight yellowing... But this is for two reasons... 1. I only get it redone every 6 weeks so as not to damage my hair or scalp, and 2. It costs a fortune to have it done properly. But I've done it for 25 years so will not stop now!

More people in Britain have (or, in some areas, had) naturally dark blonde or light brown hair and blue/green eyes than some other countries. It's often prized by many, partly novelty, subconscious preference, associated with youth and fertility.

It is their choice.

I think lots of women think it suits them more than their natural colour and it is more attractive. I don’t think it suits that many people! Lots of women look more washed out or hair too yellow.
I was blonde as a child but definitely mousy as an adult so dyed my hair other darker colours or reds.

When I was small my hair was white blonde gradually turned darker until when I was late teens it was a very dark blonde and I missed having lighter hair, which suited me better. So I dyed it lighter and have continued ever since, My roots are dark but not black so I guess I’d be a light brown if I didn’t dye it now. Everyone says they couldn’t imagine me with dark hair and neither could I! So that’s why. Although I dye the roots every 4 weeks so there’s never the stripe of dark that’s really obvious. In Europe it’s rare that you see blonde kids whereas in the UK there’s quite a lot so maybe there more people like me, who got used to having lighter hair!

I think it boils down to one thing: we want the opposite to what we have.
I'm naturally blonde, and died my hair for probably some 10ish years. But always to black, dark brown etc. I felt I was looking washed out in my natural hair colour and thought dark hair suited me better.
I stopped dying my hair because I just couldn't be arsed and never looked back.
