Dyed hair

Just pondering really.
Why do so many British women dye their hair blonde?
As opposed to other nations such as Italians or French women?
I see so many women with dark roots and yellowing hair. It’s so obviously dyed. Yet when I travel to say France, the women there are more likely to stick to a natural look. Dying their hair brown rather than blonde if they do dye it
I don’t think you can say it’s because British women have blonde hair because it so obviously isn’t blonde!
Do people think they look better, with black roots? Just because you might have been blonde as a child doesn’t mean you are now.
To be fair I have dyed my hair blonde in the past. Looking back I don’t think it really suited me, made me look washed out and pale.
It was definitely of a time where blonde hair, blue eyed, white, thin women were considered the beauty standard.

Well I was going to say easier to hide the grey but if you are talking young people I think there is still a belief that blonde is more attractive whereas in other European countries that isn’t so.

I suspect it’s because eg Italians in most cases have natural dark hair, whereas in Britain we have a lot of “mousy” hair as people call it. Neither blond or brunette. Not that there’s anything wrong with mousy hair but I know a lot of people with that hair colour find it neither one thing or the other and therefore dye it. There’s also a strong cultural thing for some reason here that blond hair is desirable. Maybe Viking related? Whereas in southern Europe it’s not quite the same

I have mousey hair naturally which personally I think is a bit of a meh of a colour so I chose either dark or blonde and chose blonde as that goes better with my skin tone as dark washes me out.

I think a lot want to hold on to the fact that they was blonde once . Even if just as a child . My mom would still say she is a natural blonde .but hasn't been blonde since a child now her roots are a light brown. I think it’s very ageing

My hair has now turned brown with a large hint of grey so I'm blonde, tried going back to brown but roots showed through really quickly 🙁

In my experience a lot of French and Italian women do dye their hair. Lots of older women with that navy black hair look and definitely lots of blonds

I think the opposite actually. I feel as if I saw a lot of elderly French and Italian women with very unnatural looking jet black, dark brown, red or orange hair that I actually found quite depressing. Here you’d go to a salon and they’d make it look nice, not just a dyed block colour.

I tried to have brown hair but my hair is skipping grey and gone straight to white, the blond means it isn't such a sharp contrast when my roots grow in so I feel better about it.

Loads of Italians dye their hair blonde! Maybe it's the one's I've met.

Yes me too. I dye my hair light blonde because it has gone mostly white.
I would love to have dark hair as I used to but if I dyed it dark then I would have a stripe at the roots.
When you get older your hair usually looses colour and it fits in with the skin colour. Old people with dark dyed hair look strange.

Blonde hair is more forgiving as you age, the grey coming through blends more easily than through dark hair. I also think dark hair can look harsher against aging skin.

In the UK we are more mousey haired naturally than in Southern Europe and this can look a bit murky/dirty blonde. It's easier to improve the colour by brightening it up with a blonde hair dye without getting too far away from how it was naturally when you were younger. If you were a blonde child then you kind of always identify as blonde I guess.

I’d go some shade of blonde if I could , my greys are coming in and my regrowth is so obvious.
The thing is I’m totally the wrong colouring for blonde , it totally washes me out .
I am naturally a dark brunette so I’m a lighter version of that now but it can throw orange sometimes which I dislike

I have dyed my hair for years whether a few highlights or sadly these days, a full head...
I hate my white hair. I'm 55 and I personally feel, rightly or wrongly, that I wouldn't be as employable in my field. I have some similar age work associates that have chosen not to dye, but i would like to keep colour for a while longer.
I have moved back towards my original hair colour, which takes a bit of work, but I enjoy the self care, and it makes me feel better.
Moving towards blonde made me start to fade away, I look better darker.
My hair takes box dyes really well so it's not as expensive as a salon trip. I get a really good cut by an excellent hair dresser.

Hahahaha, fuck right off! Sorry us British women are so disappointing to you and can’t be more like the classy French women you mention.

I don’t mind roots, they can look ok if the rest of the person is well put together.

my hair is naturally brown and not a bad shade but I look really plain and boring. It’s the consensus that I look much better with blonde hair, even with the roots. My skin is Scottish blue so both match but blonde matches more - though it’s clearly fake. I like it, you don’t have to.

There are many European (and otherwise) women who clearly have dark hair and go blonde.

Because it looks nice. Even if it doesn’t look natural it can still look nice ☺️

I think it is from the 90's when everyone had blonde hair. Some people just never went back and now consider themselves blonde. Prices have trebled since then though so roots are more of an issue than they used to be with the COL crisis. Last time I heard my friend spent £300 on 2 colour bleach touch up and that didn't include the cut!

Southern European women have darker skin and eyes than British women so blonde hair wouldn’t suit them as much.

I was blonde as a kid, have mousey brown hair now with a few greys.
My complexion is very fair so going lighter suits me better than going darker, it's as simple as that.

Gosh, that was a quick transformation from "pondering" to "judgy".

Blonde with dark roots has been a look for a while now, since the punk movement.

The wonderful thing about human beings is we all have different views on what looks good, and we're all right!

Personally, I quite like that look, it looks edgy and anti-establishment. I prefer it to dying grey hair dark and having a line of grey roots, but, my yuck is someone else's yum.
