Would you wear a vintage fur coat bought at auction?

I went to an auction at the weekend and I ended up buying a fur coat. AI tells me its mink. Its long & glossy & brown. From the look of the lining its very vintage.

I'm not vegan or vegetarian even, and I while am very happy that the UK banned fur farming I don't have any issue with wearing vintage fur - in fact I see it as honouring the poor dead wee mink.

What would happen to these old coats if they aren't worn or enjoyed? they would end up in landfill. Fake fur are a plastic environmental nightmare (though I did buy a 2nd hand vintage fake fur last winter - maybe it was a gateway fur.)

So I don't have a problem with vintage fur.

I don't know if I would wear it out. But I struggle to keep warm while WFH in the winter so I may well wear it as my WFH warming coat.

What's your take on vintage fur? Would you?

Actually I don't think most people would notice it was real. Unless you were also dripping with diamonds and stepping out of a Bentley they'd probably assume it was a nice faux fur. I've got a couple that look quite realistic.

My concern would be that wearing the vintage stuff might help to create a market that probably couldn't be filled in ways I find acceptable. I'd also prefer to see fur worn for warmth than as a status symbol.

WFH wrapped in vintage fur to minimise energy use, totally fine. Wearing it out I'd probably only do among friends or family, who know my ethical position.

I have some knitwear made from yarn spun from merino wool and fur from culled possums (they are an invasive species in NZ). It's gorgeous. If animals have to be killed we should minimise the suffering and waste.

I think it's really obvious if you touch it.

You can donate to PETA and they distribute them to the homeless and refugees in cold places, which is a good use for them as fur is jolly warm.

I have this dilemma as I have my eye on a lovely Yves Salomon sherling coat. The thing about mink though is as I understand, some of the farm conditions are horrendous.

My family were also involved in fur farming, I thought the mink were very cute and was soon put right.

The mink were kept in tiny cages and I wouldn't support fur farming at all on this basis. However releasing them was incredibly stupid as mink are utter bastards.

I don't have an issue with vintage fur, all the mink and their farmers are long dead, I just worry about wearing it outside my house.

I have possum fur/merino stuff too - its the warmest knit imagainable & possum absolutely is an ethical fur. Possum are an introduced species that have flourished beyonf comprehension in NZ. They have decimated NZ's native flora & fauna helping bring several species of birds close to extinction & killing ancient trees.

It is unfarmed & possum live a happy life in the wild until they are killed.

The poor things are already dead. This coat will last for generations. Which is the point of not wearing it?
I would not buy new ones, not even fauc, but old ones, yeap and I have no issue wearing them either.

We have one in a box in the attic that belonged to a great grandmother. Hypothetically, I would wear it in a post apocalyptic world if the weather was cold. But not in real life in public. I’d feel like I would be waiting for someone to shout obscenities at me or perhaps even throw something at me.

Wear the bloody thing . You bought it you obviously wanted it . Those animals are already dead . You can either own the fact they've been slaughtered and not let it go to waste . Or you can stuff it in a cupboard .

That's a point too. I hate it when that happens. I accidentally slipped and fell and some money went flying into the palm of someone selling a fur coat, which he then just handed to me. Happens to the best of us.

I don't know. I know who the character is but I've never seen her show. No jeans feature on any of the Instagram accounts I follow, not my sort of thing at all.!

I have several vintage fur coats I’ve collected over the years. I personally have no issue wearing something that’s been dead longer than I’ve been alive. Much better environmentally than buying new plastic based items and adding to future landfill.

I wouldn’t buy new fur, but then again I mainly buy secondhand clothes where I can.

Enjoy your new coat. Just don’t wear it in the rain if you can help it!!!

Animal rescues wouldn't be able to clean a fur coat so i can't see they would be of any use.

No way ever would i buy or wear fur.
The only acceptable exceptions for me to wearing fur are Inuits, Alaskans, Scandinavians.
Mink are vicious little shits but that's no justification to farming them in awful conditions just for their fur.
