Would you wear a vintage fur coat bought at auction?

I went to an auction at the weekend and I ended up buying a fur coat. AI tells me its mink. Its long & glossy & brown. From the look of the lining its very vintage.

I'm not vegan or vegetarian even, and I while am very happy that the UK banned fur farming I don't have any issue with wearing vintage fur - in fact I see it as honouring the poor dead wee mink.

What would happen to these old coats if they aren't worn or enjoyed? they would end up in landfill. Fake fur are a plastic environmental nightmare (though I did buy a 2nd hand vintage fake fur last winter - maybe it was a gateway fur.)

So I don't have a problem with vintage fur.

I don't know if I would wear it out. But I struggle to keep warm while WFH in the winter so I may well wear it as my WFH warming coat.

What's your take on vintage fur? Would you?

Exactly this! they do look ridiculous.

Its not a good look and that is why you very, very rarely see anyone wearing old real fur coats - because they look tacky and ageing.

You asked for opinions and that is the opinion of lots of people, I'm afraid.

A real fur coat makes you look as though you’ve just escaped from a 1983 Christmas special. They’re so enormous and cumbersome that they completely overwhelm the person wearing them. Rather than enhancing an outfit, they become the outfit and unfortunately the wearer ends up looking like they’ve been upholstered or are being attacked by a large furry bear.

It’s the ultimate 1983 Christmas special aesthetic: bigger hair, bigger shoulders, bigger jewellery and an enormous furry monstrosity thrown over the top. 🤮

If you dont want to hear opinions then perhaps you should have stated that you only wanted to hear opinions that agreed with you 🤷‍♀️

Edited

where did I say I didn't want to hear other peopled opinions?

I did say a posters OPINION was not a universal truth - it was simply her OPINION, and everyone has one.

Interesting you feel the need to make things up - why would you do that?

No, that coat lived and died in pain and suffering. You might think you're being edgy claiming you love looking like a mob wife but really you look like the thing people are claiming mink are.

ooh "edgy mob wife Pat Butcher" - exactly what I'm going for 😁😂

You said Opinions are very far from being a universal truth, even if you are trying to shame people for their differing opinion.

Where is anyone trying to shame anyone for their opinion?

Interesting you feel anyone with a different opinion to you is them trying to "shame" you.

If you feel shame then its likely something within you

RobinEllacotStrike · 17/09/2026 10:10

My comment on opinions was in response to the poster who said it was "the truth" that "you all look ugly" - its not "the truth" its her opinion.

You then jump in with this completely made up statement "If you dont want to hear opinions then perhaps you should have stated that you only wanted to hear opinions that agreed with you"

Its really not that hard to understand.

It is the truth though! 😂

Well, my truth, anyway. If I didn’t genuinely think real fur coats were ugly as hell, I wouldn’t say it. You’re perfectly entitled to disagree with my opinion, but that doesn’t somehow make my opinion untrue to me.

That’s rather the point of having an opinion surely. We all believe our own opinions are right -otherwise, we probably wouldn’t have them in the first place and you did invite opinions.

It’s really not that hard to understand.

RobinEllacotStrike · 17/09/2026 10:44

thinking your opinion is THE TRUTH is exactly why we are so fucked up as a society right now.

I don't believe my opinions are right or the truth and I don't think most people believe this about themselves.

My opinion is based on what I know, my parenting perhaps, my schooling & education (or lack thereof), my life experiences. I willingly accept I don't know everything & I am ignorant about most things in the world - its really not possible to be anything other then ignorant of most things in the world - what we don't know isn't even measurable. As I learn more, age, expand my knowledge, experience different things, encounter different people and their opinions & knowledge, become less ignorant about certain topics & views, I know my opinions are 100% likely to change, which indeed they do.

OP posts:
marbIecake · 17/09/2026 10:47

I know my opinions are 100% likely to change, which indeed they do.

So then you may well, at some point, come to agree with me that fur coats are horrible, tacky reminders of animal cruelty.

And if you do, presumably that will become your truth too - until, of course, you learn something else that changes your mind again.

concertinacornflake · 17/09/2026 10:54

Something that is 100% true is that fur provokes a wide range of strong opinions. So the wearer needs to be a certain type of person to be either happy or unconcerned about being noticed and interpreted for wearing it.

Subjectivity versus objectivity.

Opinions on fur coats are often subjective. Objectively, animals were killed for them, and objectively they're warm and cosy. Attractiveness is subjective, as is whether or not one thinks it's ethical to wear vintage fur coats.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/09/2026 10:58

RobinEllacotStrike · 15/09/2026 16:47

do you think its different from leather, or sheepskin?

I think we feel emotionally its different, but it isnt really is it?

At least leather or sheepskin will usually be a by product of animals raised for food. The sheepskin house boots I wear in winter are made from local Cornish skins after the sheep have been slaughtered for meat.

II’ve never heard of anyone eating mink, though it wouldn’t altogether surprise me, but in that case presumably the meat would be a by product of the fur, rather than the other way around. I wonder what happened to the 17m factory farmed mink that were apparently slaughtered in Denmark during the Covid crisis. I gather that the skins would mostly have been heading for China….

For years I’ve had hanging in a wardrobe two mink coats that belonged to my long dead DM and an aunt of DH. If anyone has any ideas as to what on earth to do with them, I’d be glad to hear them.

RobinEllacotStrike · 17/09/2026 10:58

actually I've changed the other way - I would not have worn fur when I was younger, and I'll admit years ago I have questioned friends who did. I would not have called them ugly, but I asked them why and we had interesting conversations about it. Now I'm totally up for wearing a gorgeous vintage fur to keep warm & cosy.

I am very pleased that fur farming has been banned in UK & hope it is banned around the world. I think ethical new fur like NZ possom etc is not only perfectly acceptable but desirable.

I happy to wear cunty vintage mink, but I would not wear bear or a cat fur for example - thats a step to far for me personally.

full of contradictions - like most people.

Haha, but this is actually exactly what I mean! 😂

You've just explained that your opinion changed over time -you once questioned people who wore fur, and now you've changed your mind and think some fur is not only acceptable but desirable.

So you clearly do believe your current opinion to be right based on what you currently know and believe. You just also accept that you could change your mind in the future.

Which is exactly what I was saying.

Also, I absolutely love that we've gone from “fur coats are great” to a carefully constructed ethical hierarchy in which a "gorgeous vintage mink" is acceptable but bear or cat fur is apparently where we draw the line.

“Full of contradictions -like most people” is probably the most sensible thing you've said in this entire discussion. 😂

I still think they're ugly AF!

Dd wears vintage real fur coats in London and overseas as they're very warm in cold weather. Europeans still wear a lot of real fur and they're doesn't appear to be such a stigma there. She wouldn't dream of buying new fur and yes she's very much an animal lover. It's so very hard to tell the difference between real & fake fur by looking at it these days if you're feeling apprehensive about wearing it,

An ethical position is more than simply an opinion.

Also people hold opinions that are unjustifiable, because they are based on flawed principles or incorrect facts.

Opinions do not have to be respected.

You mentioned 'most people' being full of contradictions - if people think things through properly they shouldn't be.

vix3rd · 17/09/2026 11:25

I have a real fur but it's, sadly, too big for me.
My view is the animal isn't going to be any less dead if I don't wear it.

I also have a fox fur that was my grans. I use it to scare the dog.

Edited to say - It was second had and is V old / vintage. I wouldn't buy a new one.

namechangedforthisquestion1 · 17/09/2026 11:27

Yes I would wear it I think they’re beautiful

Wookyhole · 17/09/2026 11:29

No I wouldn’t for a few reasons:

  1. The ethics of it and the fact that it was once an alive being no matter how long ago.
  2. I’d be worried about backlash in the street / potential aggression or nasty comments thus taking away any enjoyment of the garment anyway.
  3. For me it would be a styling nightmare! What to put it with, how to wear it as no clothes I own would seem to fit.
RobinEllacotStrike · 17/09/2026 11:33

I'll probably just wear it to keep warm over winter month WFH so I'm not too worried about styling it.

I'm 100% not going to wear it to yoga 😁 but maybe for a winter walk on a cold dry day

Interesting

I think there is a strong argument for ethicial fur - see the possom fur in NZ example above.

I think its ethical to prioritise reduce/reuse choices especially clothing. The fashion induistry is one of the most polluting & exploitative industries in the world and despite raising awareness of this for decades as a society we have become caught up in a spiral of cheap fast disposable fashion & over consumption - this effects us as consumers, as creators, our environment, human slavery and in particlular the econiomic explotiation of women and children in the fashion industry in the global south.

We probably could stop manufacturing most clothing today and everyone would be absolutely fine wearing existing clothing for decades.

I've chosen to focus on buying second hand clothes when possible - I do buy some new items but most of my wardrobe is now from vinted/charity shops, with the occassional new piece from either small businesses, or Bcorp style businesses.

Finally my teen DD's seem to be embracing buying clothing from Vintage & charity shops too which feels like great progress.

Yes! 😂 I’m just fascinated that anyone looks at Pat Butcher - giant fur coat, leopard print, chandelier earrings and thinks, “Yep. That’s the look.” 🤣

Each to their own, I suppose!
