Would you wear a vintage fur coat bought at auction?

I went to an auction at the weekend and I ended up buying a fur coat. AI tells me its mink. Its long & glossy & brown. From the look of the lining its very vintage.

I'm not vegan or vegetarian even, and I while am very happy that the UK banned fur farming I don't have any issue with wearing vintage fur - in fact I see it as honouring the poor dead wee mink.

What would happen to these old coats if they aren't worn or enjoyed? they would end up in landfill. Fake fur are a plastic environmental nightmare (though I did buy a 2nd hand vintage fake fur last winter - maybe it was a gateway fur.)

So I don't have a problem with vintage fur.

I don't know if I would wear it out. But I struggle to keep warm while WFH in the winter so I may well wear it as my WFH warming coat.

What's your take on vintage fur? Would you?

Yes, I would.

Me too. The animals died a long time ago, I didn't stimulate demand.

I have a friend who lies that her fur coats are faux (if asked). Few younger people have seen real fur, so they believe her - and upmarket faux fur is very convincing!

Nothing else is as warm.

I’ve had several over the years. I like them, they’re really really warm. But unless they’ve been stored properly, all the hair falls out every time you sit down.

I'm clearly not storing my head properly ...

Yes I would, it already exists so why not. I don’t agree with making new ones though

Same, though I make a moral exception for people who live in very cold climates. Fur actually is the best cold protection (evolution designed it that way) and, when it comes to the crunch, I put human wellbeing before animal rights.

I live in Britain, it's not that cold. I have no fur coats, but have worn vintage in the past and would again.

Wheesht2 · 16/09/2026 09:52

I’d wear it and my daughter wears a beautiful vintage mink coat that I’m forever having to sew the pellets together for her. She has had no abuse from anyone when wearing it.
Ive inherited an elderly relatives Beaver coat but it’s too big for me now(thanks Mounjaro). I never encountered any abuse when wearing it either.

PhaedraTwo · 16/09/2026 11:28

It's absolutely revolving. Fur is beautiful on the living animal, not on you.

Of course I wouldn't say anything if I saw you wearing them, but I'd judge the hell out of you.

And all the faux concern about waste, oh ha ha.

BillieWiper · 16/09/2026 11:30

Yeah I would wear it. I mean I wouldn't have bought it to not do so.

I used to wear vintage fur jackets regularly but not for a few years.

Do you also judge people wearing leather? Or with feather duvets?

And really, there's just no point in tossing out a perfectly good, wearable garment that's warm, potentially beautiful (to someone who likes the look of fur, faux or otherwise), and not filled with microplastics. You might as well wear it.

ExistWHY · 16/09/2026 12:28

Get some huge clip on ear rings, them and a fur coat, pat butcher come back.

No I would not, i dont think fur coats of any kind suits anyone, or wide leg trousers for that matter.

HollyhocksandPeons · 16/09/2026 12:32

Absolutely! You wear leather, don't you? Also, it is vintage! And btw, lucky you to fit into a vintage fur coat! They are usually ridiculously tiny!

concertinacornflake · 16/09/2026 12:34

No, would never wear this (unless we get to the apocalypse).

I just think it belongs in the past. It's not retro like a lava lamp, it should stay in the past.

But that is because most people are normal, thank God! How do you manage to sew it? I have an amazing coat, split, nobody touches it - they say you have to buy a new one (yeah, right) because they say if they put a needle through it, it will disintegrate further. Do you apply anything to the pellets before you put the needle through it? Like a leather cleaning liquid to soften it?

Kunik · 16/09/2026 12:38

Of course I would. I have some furs inherited from my husband's grandmother (why would she wear them in Brasil, of all places, I don't know) and I wear them when it is cold.

candybrush · 16/09/2026 12:41

RobinEllacotStrike · 15/09/2026 16:49

Yes I would do that too - but once it can't be worn or reused anymore.

It seems they can last for many many years.

It seems they can last for many many years.

Presumably many, many more years than the poor animal that was skinned for this garment.

YABU.

Neuronimo · 16/09/2026 13:02

Aesthetically, I think they look beautiful and arguably it is better that vintage items are worn rather than going into landfill. Personally, though I don't I could wear a fur coat, which is a bit mad as I wear leather. I hate to see the mink stoles with the head and feet intact.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 15/09/2026 16:49

No.

But apparently minks are cunts. So there’s that.

This is true, took out all of my chickens the little bastards.

Tel12 · 16/09/2026 13:07

No, wouldn't dream of wearing real fur

Stupid comment. Minks are neither cunts nor little bastards. They are carnivores doing what carnivores in the wild do. What's the fur wearers' excuse?

These 2 threads are revolvting with their pitiful excuses.

You all look ugly in fur. Report if you like. I'm leaving. I'm disgusted by these threads

Franjipanl8r · 16/09/2026 13:28

I don’t buy new fur, but wearing vintage fur rather than plastic “vegan” leather or synthetic fake fur is far better for the environment.

The microplastic pollution and air pollution caused by manufacturing, wearing and washing plastics is having a huge environmental impact on many many species far beyond a single animal. So those who say they care about animals, need to stop wearing plastics.

There is now not a single food source left in the world (animal or plant based) that doesn’t contain microplastics. We’re wearing plastics, shedding plastic into our environment, breathing in plastics and eating plastics. Vintage animal or plant based fabrics are WAY better for all the animals than plastic clothes.

We are at the top of the food chain doing what those at the top of the food chain do best - reducing rewearing & recycling. 😁

No idea why you think anyone would report your post 🙄

I doubt women who would wear vintage fur are fragile enough to report someone for having a different opinion on the topic.

Minks live 3-6 years in the wild. Everyone & everything dies. My coat lives on doing what it was designed to do.

Nevermind - enjoy your planet/environment/animal habitat killing plastic clothing.

I'm happy to continue to focus on building & wearing a second hand vintage wardrobe in natural fibers as much as possible.

I don't know. I know who the character is but I've never seen her show. No jeans feature on any of the Instagram accounts I follow, not my sort of thing at all.!

the show was Sex & the City

No! I wouldn’t, for two reasons it’s promoting the use of fur, vintage or not. And secondly they look horrendous real or not!

Poppingby · 16/09/2026 14:39

I wouldn't wear it cos it's kind of gross, I'm vegetarian and people wouldn't shut up about it, and to be perfectly honest I would assume it was dusty and insect ridden even if it isn't. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't if you like it. The minks would be dead by now anyway right?

RobinEllacotStrike · 16/09/2026 14:49

seahorsessky · 15/09/2026 17:09

Mould/mildew/chemical residues would maybe be a concern, and the practicality compared to coats a lot of mums would choose.

It's hardly going to compete with or replace my Seasalt waterproof "Mum" coat!

I've picked it up this morning & many here will be devestated to hear there's no mould, no mildew, it doesnt smell, its not shedding any hairs and the pelts feel soft & flexible. Seems it has been stored well & looked after for many years. Cost £30 so dramatically less than a plastic warm puffa, and its not going to landfill just yet.

It looks like a new lining has been added at some point & there is no label.

Oh dear, that's me told then. Devastating.
