Would you wear a vintage fur coat bought at auction?

I went to an auction at the weekend and I ended up buying a fur coat. AI tells me its mink. Its long & glossy & brown. From the look of the lining its very vintage.

I'm not vegan or vegetarian even, and I while am very happy that the UK banned fur farming I don't have any issue with wearing vintage fur - in fact I see it as honouring the poor dead wee mink.

What would happen to these old coats if they aren't worn or enjoyed? they would end up in landfill. Fake fur are a plastic environmental nightmare (though I did buy a 2nd hand vintage fake fur last winter - maybe it was a gateway fur.)

So I don't have a problem with vintage fur.

I don't know if I would wear it out. But I struggle to keep warm while WFH in the winter so I may well wear it as my WFH warming coat.

What's your take on vintage fur? Would you?

I wouldn’t wear it, no.

My mum inherited a big mink coat when I was a kid in 60s. She never wore it as she said it was too heavy and it didn't keep her warm anyway.

If you like it then you should wear it, but I personally would not wear real fur. I don't consider myself particularly squeamish but I don't think it would sit right with me (pun intended).

No I wouldn't. Fur isn't my thing, I wouldn't wear faux fur either. My family was involved in mink farming when I was very young, it was/isn't a wasteful industry and the meat was used somewhere. The only damage was done by people freeing the cute little mink in to the countryside. Enjoy your coat.

I recall trying on a huge beaver coat in my teens - in a shop. Very Russian mid winter style & solid. Way too warm for the country I was in.

This one is mid calf length but not at all heavy.

I wouldn’t wear one, personally. I’d donate it to an animal rescue place for bedding, that would be a good last use for it imo rather than landfill.

Fwiw I have vintage coats, I don't wear them anymore.
I'm more worried about the huge rise in animals that are not stunned before slaughter. That's absolutely appalling and done in the name of religion. I love curry but I don't eat from halal food outlets.

Yes I would do that too - but once it can't be worn or reused anymore.

This might get deleted but minks are indeed used in their entirety. The bodies are used for dog food. The demise is by gasing so as not to damage the pelts.
Lambskin is a bi product of the food industry as is calf leather. ( My BFF worked in an Edinburgh furrier). I personally have no objection and as a fwiw your coat is female skins, they're lighter and more expensive.
A new coat is £20k and most people would rather have a car!

have a mink coat bought second hand in North Dakota, USA. Gorgeous brown fur , gorgeous charcoal and silver satin plaid lining with the original owners monogram. It was hanging forgotten at the very back of an antique store and it is a perfect fit for me.

I wear it. It’s light weight but warm and so pretty. Everyone likes to try it on. I’m careful wear I wear it but no problems for me. My dd has had some verbal comments on the fur hood trim of her coat but no one has ever said anything to me. Fur both real repurposed vintage or faux seems to be in style to me. See it on “evenings out” on young women and many wearing it at curated antique shows.

Mould/mildew/chemical residues would maybe be a concern, and the practicality compared to coats a lot of mums would choose.

I inherited a fur coat. It was cut up (which made me cry, thinking of how much pain its original owners had been subjected to) and donated to local animal shelters within a couple of days of receipt of it.

It's time we moved past this.

Google a racoon dog being anally electrocuted, or the animals skinned alive, boiled alive for their fur, their eyeballs melting as they succumb to a slow agony.

I’ve got all my grandmother’s furs - stoles, a jacket and a long coat. Nobody else in the family wanted them and I felt sad because she treasured them. Different times. I last wore the coat about 8 years ago at the carnival in Venice and got no abuse - although tbf it was probably because of other people’s even more outlandish clothes.

We have different views - cutting up a beautiful wearable vintage fur for animals to sleep on & chew up seems a lot more callous & disrespectful to me than wearing and enjoying the vintage fur for as long as possible. The suffering has already occured decades ago.

I might donate it to an animal shelter if it was no longer wearable but not before then.

No, although I do wear leather. Don't particularly see a moral issue with vintage fur but you'd get negative reactions. A lot of vintage fur is also pretty manky if it hasn't been looked after. I sat next to a woman in a fox fur stole at a wedding a few years ago- it was rank and she left bits of fox fur on everyone she brushed against.
