How can I discreetly manage facial hair while wild camping?

Unfortunately for me, as a woman, I seem to have plenty of neck, chic and upper lip hair. I don't know if it is because of hormones, the pill, etc. I used to pluck but switched to shaving years ago. I'm going wild camping with a very new bf at the weekend. How can I discreetly shave by a Loch!? I don't think a hairly face is an option, we're spending 24 hours together, within 24 hours it will be 1mm of stubble. 🙁

Presuming you aren't going to shit in front of him, give it a quick pluck when you are hiding behind a bush?

I just can't get over the whole... 'want to look my best for a new partner, I know, let's go wild camping!' Where is the logic.

I know. We do long walks in the Scottish Highlands. We often bump into people who are wild camping and chat to them. They certainly don’t look well groomed and while we are chatting we usually stand a couple of meters away because quite frankly they smell.

Yetone · 02/09/2026 16:20

OP, this is a long term problem for you so I would look for a long term solution to get rid of your hair.

MurphysColeslaw · 02/09/2026 16:36

I imagine she’ll do that now she’s schtupping Ray Mears .

AFigureWalks · 02/09/2026 17:06

I dread the day something happens to me and I’m hospitalised and unable to do anything about my ginger and white chin hairs.
I have made my sisters promise to sort me out, even if I am unconscious and on a ventilator.

Sunbringer · 02/09/2026 17:23

Compact and a wax strip. RIP it off fast.

OhBotherSaidPoo · 01/09/2026 21:45

A manual epilator perhaps?

No you have to let it grow long enough to grab it, same with waxing, plucking

OP you can just 'go to the toilet' with your little razor and I tend to just use face cream to shave with anyway rather than soap, or some face oil or something.

Bogstandardname · 02/09/2026 17:30

Start waxing instead of shaving. You shouldn't need to wax everyday. Agree with others that you need to sort out a long term solution.

This is another example, the thread is littered with them, of people who dont understand the issue

Waxing means you have to let the hairs grow long enough to wax, they dont all grow at the same rate, in the same direction, which means that you do need to remove every day.

Secondly, me personally, even if I was brave enough to let it grow, often it snaps off at skin level or just doesnt even take the hairs off

Thirdly, Ive had laser treatment (wrong colour hair for some of it), electrolysis, hair removal cream, Vaneeqa (made by face bleed), Metformin (gave me stomach upset), shaving, waxing, plucking, epilating.

None works wholly successfully for me. There is no 'long term solution'. So its a mixture of plucking and shaving. I also have many hairs that just sit under the skin, like big black lumps and I cant dig them out. I have hairs that are so small I cant grab them, but so stubbly and glinty in the light. Ive got jet black ones that are viscious and wont come out, white ones, blond ones, ginger ones, thick ones, thin ones, weak ones, strong wiry ones. Sideburns, chin, moustouche and now over my cheeks.

Nice.

MurphysColeslaw · 02/09/2026 17:39

@AFigureWalks My sister and I have made the same pledge 😁

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/09/2026 17:41

If you're going to be doing the Wild Thing whilst wild camping he's hardly going to be looking at your beard in sny detail whilst poking your fire!

Agree. I used to wax, but have to let it grow in between.

I shave every day and pluck sometimes too. It is a taboo, and whoever said men don’t care is wrong! I’m fairly certain my DP knows, but he’s never said anything.

I cap and wild camp because I love it. I don’t really wear make up, do skin care or anything. But it’s very different letting your legs go a bit stubbly/not wearing make up and someone (anyone) finding out you have a beard.

If you don’t get it, then you don’t have the amount of chin hair I do (and have had all my life!)

MeridaBrave · 02/09/2026 17:47

The springy epilators: start using a couple of weeks before, yes removes for 3-4 weeks.

Also mirror and tweezers.

MurphysColeslaw · 02/09/2026 17:48

Maybe we don’t all get it, but we’re trying to help..

Ponderingwindow · 02/09/2026 17:49

Get a tiny electric razor. About the size of a lipstick. Takes a aa battery. You don’t need a mirror to use one and barely makes any noise.

I epilated this morning and Im sitting here now feeling quite a long piece of stubble from 2 hairs onf the side of my cheek, long enough to be seen and felt, not long enough to be grabbed by the epilator.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/09/2026 18:02

You’re wild camping. You’ll be shitting in a hole in the ground, ffs. Wax before you go, and decide to chill? Miniature shaver thing for while you are squatting in the undergrowth? If this is going to be a regular activity (‘shudder’), then maybe laser hair removal, or a Phillips Lumea, or something similar going forward?

nonevernotever · 02/09/2026 18:32

The best I've found is the Finishing touch flawless hair remover. It's basically a mini electric razor that looks like a lipstick . It was a game changer for me

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 01/09/2026 21:46

One of those springy thingy epilators!

This. They are brilliant - you don’t even need a mirror. Just take it with you when you go to the loo, and you can twirl away in private.

Boreded · 02/09/2026 20:31

Anon2025December · 01/09/2026 21:59

It's wildcamping, there won't be a bathroom. I will look up how an epilator works but, I don't want him to feel my stubble, 🙁 will be wanting a kiss though...

Honestly I just use a bic - works quickly and you’ll be able to do it without him seeing then

stuffedanimalsandchocolate · 02/09/2026 20:33

Get them threaded just before you go and you won’t need to touch them up while you’re there

ReadingTime · 02/09/2026 21:26

I would get them zapped at a beauticians before you go. Laser if the hairs are dark and your skin is pale, or electrolysis if not.

Lumea didn't work at all for me on my face, but electrolysis changed my life. Admittedly not useful for OP's camping trip with the timeframe.

Just shows how different we all are, because I endured electrolysis for years with minimal results. (I am old!) It was my electrolysis lady who suggested I try the 'new' laser methods to at least thin it out before going back to her. I did the professional version of laser removal which was a massive difference.

I've subsequently purchased home IPL devices and all have worked very well.

However, I am naturally hairy, middle eastern hair and Irish skin basically. Hours and hours of my life on electrolysis and that was only covering such a tiny part of what I needed doing on my face.

I am always curious about Lumea (sorry to highjack the thread OP). Does hair have to be dark when you zap with Lumea? I bleach mine, so would it work?!

Are the roots of the hairs dark? Then yes, it should work.

You'd need to trust the process a bit- I believe you'd want to shave then flash them with it in order to achieve the best results. The light works by targeting the dark bits. Which is why it works best with dark hair and lighter skin, though varying degrees of skin tone can still work (the light still needs to be able to detect the darker hairs)

If your hair itself is light or grey, it won't work on those hairs.

The home devices are a real gamechanger and so much cheaper than salons. (And yes, before someone asks, I've had many years of experience with various laser treatments in salons. As a user, the effects of the home devices are virtually the same, if not better than what the salons were back when I went to them)

Interesting. I did initially have the experience of electrolysis not working, but it turned out the practitioner wasn't very good basically. When I switched to a different place I started seeing results, it did take a year but the facial hair is now gone for good. As for the Lumea, it did work well on my legs (but much of the hair came back again after a while), but just had no effect on my face at all.
