Recommendations for an affordable wig after a disappointing haircut

I’ve had a terrible haircut. The hairdresser is new to me and clearly made an error. These things happen. I said I would sleep on it but after a wash it looks terrible.

Salon manager is very apologetic and has refunded me in full but I have this hideous cut to grow out. I think I need a wig.

Any recommendations of a cheap ish one that will see me through a few months?

I’m absolutely gutted.

I’m a grown woman - I know that it won’t be exactly like the reference picture but it’s honestly nothing like it. I’ve had a little cry, DH has sent me the pic from Fleabag and we’ve had a laugh but I’m so disappointed that I’m going to look shit for a few months now.

Is it really so bad that you need a wig?

I have no advice, but wigs and toppers seem to be really good nowadays.

I will upload a pic which has changed my face using ai and my reference pic.

My hair is naturally curly but I can style it competently and the pic is the kind of cut I’ve had many times in my life - it’s entirely possible with my hair.

It sort of hits my jaw at the most unflattering angle. I feel like a muppet or Fraggle Rock character.

I'm not sure which of those is the "bad" haircut and which is your reference picture, they all look quite nice to me. Certainly nothing you need a wig to cover.

I really like it - it doesn't need to be covered at all.

Haircuts sometimes need a few weeks to 'settle'. See how you feel after that but I do not think you need a wig.

Why can’t you just style it and put it up until it grows a bit longer?

Yes, I also can't tell which is which but both look nice, I am sorry you are upset though (and surprised if your husband really thinks it doesn't look good!)

Is one of those supposed to be the "bad" haircut? If so, you are bonkers, it's totally fine. Last year I ended up with an awful mullet which was impossible to make look good but I braved it till it grew out. No harm done.

Like PP I don't understand what's wrong with either of those haircuts.

As someone who is dealing with baldness from chemo, I doubt a wig is the solution. I tried a few on when I first lost my hair and decided not to bother. They looked crap and cost around £280. I came to the conclusion that if I bought one I wouldn't wear it. I'm sure your hair is nowhere near as bad as you think it is.

I suspect AI has distorted the vibe by making ‘me’ considerably more attractive 🤣

Clip it back and pull out a few face framing bits while it grows out. That’s your best bet. A good wig is expensive, a cheap wig will look like a cheap wig. If it’s too short for one big clip, get some smaller clips and clip it back in sections.

Are we missing something OP? Why do you think your hair is so bad you'd need to buy a cheap wig to cover it?

My husband was cheering me up - he thinks it’s nice but understands it’s not what I asked for.

I think it’s more that it’s so not what I asked for. I’ll see how I look tomorrow when I’m in work with makeup on etc.

I’m assuming yours is the dark haired one and the blonde is the reference? The blonde image would never be created with natural texture - my hair is cut very similarly to the blonde reference, but I have very fine hair that settles in a limp frizzy wave if I don’t properly style it, so I blow dry straight and then add a wave with curling tongs.
I think the dark haired image looks fab, and I would LOVE to have that kind of natural texture and volume! But you won’t get hair that looks like the reference without styling straight and then adding a wave back in. That would also add length.

It looks like a completely standard hairstyle. I can promise you in a couple of weeks time you won’t even think about it.

I think a wig might be a bit drastic , sounds more a semi up-do situation until it grows out. I had a home dye disaster about four years ago and had to go and get myself a grade three! You can style anything out! I dyed it baby pink, enjoyed the softness and the fact that it only took me 15 minutes to get ready of a morning!

I had quite long hair but was doing zero with it and felt scraggy and in a rut style wise. I wanted to
go back to a shoulder length bob with a little bit of asymmetry like the blonde pic.

The stylist has cut it much shorter, there are no layers so it kind of mushrooms out around my jaw and I’m fat so a bit jowly and it’s really accentuated by the length.

It’s not the worst cut in the world but it doesn’t suit me and it’s not what I asked for.

I think it might look better ironed.

Your hair isn't straight enough to do that blond one which is created by tongs.

That’s what the stylist was supposed to do and couldn’t get any texture in it. He had to iron it flat and then put wax through.

It was like the cut got away from him if that makes sense? He clearly took too much off and there’s no fixing that.

It is if it’s straightened and then tonged. I’ve had this cut or a version of it many times.

I am sorry you feel it’s too short though - that’s a horrible feeling. But honestly you might find in two weeks it’s perfect.

I would wear the side with less volume (the parting side) tucked or pinned behind your ear and embrace the volume on the other side. I think it looks really stylish with natural curls.

I think the dark curly hair looks great and you just need to play with it, wash it and style it yourself and do your makeup with it. I guess it's a shock more than anything. I can see that it's shorter than the reference picture but the danger with a reference picture which is nothing like your natural texture is that the stylist doesn't get what exactly it is you like and want from the picture.

It's side parted and asymmetric but the key difference is the length - did you say you wanted it just off your shoulders? The photo on the right with the model facing down is actually REALLY hard to spot the exact length but on the right hand side of the picture the hair hits her jaw just under her chin and yours doesn't look a lot shorter than that.

All that said - I've been through many bob stages and once it was cut much shorter than I expected and I had a panic.

It's hair, it'll grow.

There are many wigs out there but lots of really shitty cheap wigs! If you genuinely want a wig, my first port of call for all questions beauty and makeup wise is a facebook group called Mrs Gloss and the Goss.
