Recommendations for an affordable wig after a disappointing haircut

I’ve had a terrible haircut. The hairdresser is new to me and clearly made an error. These things happen. I said I would sleep on it but after a wash it looks terrible.

Salon manager is very apologetic and has refunded me in full but I have this hideous cut to grow out. I think I need a wig.

Any recommendations of a cheap ish one that will see me through a few months?

I’m a grown woman - I know that it won’t be exactly like the reference picture but it’s honestly nothing like it. I’ve had a little cry, DH has sent me the pic from Fleabag and we’ve had a laugh but I’m so disappointed that I’m going to look shit for a few months now.

Your hair has bounced up from the cut

Give it two weeks and it will seem like it's settled a lot and it won't seem so short

Honestly, it is not worth getting a wig for that amount of time

I bet it looks fine and other people don't notice that much about us anyway

I know it has by even straight it’s much shorter than it should be. Straight it hits my chin. There are no layers or shaping. It’s a shit cut.

I’ve also had cuts in my time which have looked terrible but exactly what I’ve asked for and that is entirely on me.

I know it will grow but my hair doesn’t grow especially fast so it’ll be Christmas before it’s a decent length to try something with it.

I feel really ugly with it. I don’t have the prettiest face anyway and this just accentuates all the worst parts.

OP, I am not a hairdresser but I look after the marketing and social media for one - at my place the salon owner (who is amazing) would be happy to redo the cut, regardless of who the original stylist was. Happy clients are as much part of the brand as the salon logo. If you feel comfortable going back I’m sure they would be happy to help you. (I’m also sure it doesn’t look anywhere near as bad as you think.)

I cut myself a fringe this week OP and for some reason even though I could see it was way too short I couldn’t stop trying to even it out! It’s so bad! I have an appointment to try fix it this week, maybe I need a wig too!

My friend had a dodgy fringe cut and she bought a clip in fringe to cover it while it grew out. Her hairdresser helped her with the colour match.

Post a real photo with a black blob over your face or your eyes. Then we can see your actual hair and how it sits on your jawline.

I have wavy hair and when I scrunch it, it looks like yours. So I’m biased - but I honestly think this looks fab. No hairdryer in summer is surely also a bonus!?

I’ve had pixies before and my hair looks really shit when it’s growing out. I either slick it back with loads of gel, or use funky hair bands.

I really don’t mean this in a nasty way - but no one pays as much attention to your hair as you do. I dyed mine blonde for the first time in my life and no bugger even noticed!! 😂

You need some weight taken out of the ends to prevent the mushroom effect.

Accept that it will be shorter than you planned, but now go for something stylish that works for you.

If you look at this picture, it's obviously straighter than your natural curl, but you say you are confident styling and this isn't a hard one to achieve at home - but importantly, the layers stop the triangle shape from happening. I'd go for something like that and 'own' the shorter length.

@Piknik that’s lovely - it’s too short for that tho. I will post some pics. I’ve just straightened it and it does look better.

Straightening it does seem to have given it some length.

Also, from what I can see in the photos you are far far from ugly! You have a beautiful profile!

Im not generally someone who fixates on my looks, I have good days and bad days like everyone.

Hopefully I’ll feel better after I’ve been out and about for a bit.

Ok three things:

It's really not horrible at all - shiny, standard bob length

It's definitely not too short to chop into a layered bob like the one I posted. The length is about right, you just get a decent hairdresser to chop some layers into it for movement and mushroom-deactivation (trust me, I know ALL about triangle shaped hair and mushroom frizz)

Your profile is genuinely lovely. I LOVE the shape of your nose - elegant and sophisticated, and you have lovely full lips.

when I feel a bit calmer I’ll find a salon. I’ve not had a regular hairdresser for years so I’ll need recommendations so I’ll ask around.

Naturally curly hair always mushrooms without layering or the weight being taken out of it, I speak from experience 😜

If you really hate it, buy some clip in hair extensions, go to a hair dresser you trust and get them to style/cut it with the extensions in. You can buy all different colours and curl patterns. No wig needed and you only need the extensions until it grows out, unless of course you love having them in.

Could another hairdresser thin it out so it’s not so full. Having thick hair I remember a mushroom experience and have never gone that short again. Straighteners may help too?

I am very fussy about haircuts and am rarely happy with them - my hair has a bit of curl and I think that makes a difference. My hair often doesn’t sit “right” when it’s been cut. But my advice to you would be to give it a week/10 days. Give yourself (and your hair) time to adapt to the change. I think then you’ll be able to see what others can - it’s by no means a disaster and you do look really nice! In the meantime, could you treat yourself to a bit of glam? A new lipstick or bag or something that makes you feel a bit better? And - as you rightly point out - it will grow! But I sympathise. I really do. It’s horrid to feel not right in yourself.

Thank you all for your kind and supportive comments. I have a level of measure - I know it’s not the end of the world but I’d hoped this would make me feel nice and it’s done the opposite.

DH said he thinks it’s nice and that I still have ‘a very nicely shaped head’ (wtf? Men can be strange).

I will leave a week or so before deciding what to do.

Ive had a hair-don't before and you just need to not look in the mirror very much for a few weeks until you kind of accept it by whivh time it'll start growing out especially if it's short.

I wouldn't think a wig was worth it for a few weeks?

Your hair is glossy and healthy and it's just a bit shorter than you wanted. In a couple of weeks time, it'll be the length you wanted.

It really isn't the disaster you think it is.
