The end of summer lies ahead, but we're hoping for more bling!

Even Spain hasn't changed their law so if Leti and Felipe were ever to split up and he were to remarry and have a son then all Leonor's hard work would go out the window and she'd be supplanted by an infant. Obviously that's highly unlikely but it doesn't feel right that it's even theoretically possible!

I often forget that @KiIIingMeDeftly- I think she’s technically ‘Heir Presumptive’ and no, it doesn’t feel right at all.

I see that the Japanese imperial house has relaxed some of its rules and women will no longer lose their royal status after marriage. But they still can't inherit the throne! So near and yet so far...

Does that mean the ones that have married and been forced out can come back? Thinking of Princess Mako (currently living in New York with her husband) whose father and younger brother are first and second in line to the throne.

Yes we watched ‘The Mummy’ this weekend and that is exactly what caused all the trouble!

No! Imagine that. Leti had better keep him sweet 😉

Good question, will they do it retrospectively?

OP posts:
KiIIingMeDeftly · 19/07/2026 15:16

I don't know if it will be applied retrospectively but if it did then I think the Emperor has a sister who married a non-royal too. I've heard that Mako's sister (Kako??) had said she would never marry as she felt it her duty to remain part of the imperial family, but maybe this will benefit her.

I was just reading up on the imperial family and they seem incredibly long-lived. The next heir after the Emperor's brother and nephew is his 90yo uncle! And let's not forget that the emperor emeritus is still alive too.9

bluegreygreen · 19/07/2026 16:50

The other question is - if they now remain members of the imperial family, can their (male) children inherit the throne?

A new thread has started about Royal Jewels if anyone is interested in popping over for a look.

Yes, a few of us are on there. Before starting it, the OP sounded out the idea on here. She's certainly very knowledgeable.

By all accounts the King of Sweden hasn't got over the constitutional reform that took effect in 1980 that snatched the throne away from his son!

Recklessismymiddlename · 19/07/2026 20:02

Just saw a glimpse of Felipe at the World Cup. Not sure if the other Spanish RF with him.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 19/07/2026 20:35

I think they're all there, I saw them being interviewed at the stadium. Leti and Sofia in red and Leonor in white.

Felipe was on the awards podium, beautifully tailored as always.

eggandonion · 20/07/2026 00:43

Some of the footballers were very tall unless the podium was at an odd angle. I think William and George should have gone to the England match...I m not English or a football fan but it was great 😁

I suspect William and family have slipped away on holiday now. They did last year.

Maireas · 20/07/2026 09:15

I noticed that Sofia got to hold the World Cup aloft!

some lovely photos of the spanish royals with the team and at the game.

That old picture is so cute! And probably the last time Leonor was taller than Sofia!!

SqueakyDinosaur · 20/07/2026 15:59

Absolutely adorable!

I know! So sweet.
Only 2010, which feels recent to me!

I definitely feel like someone put a tuck in this century. There's no way it's been going for 26 years, it must be 16 at most!

eggandonion · 20/07/2026 19:50

I wonder if William would have attended the world cup final if England was in it? I felt sorry for the English and French teams having to play for 3rd place but they were great once they warmed up!
I think the royals should stagger their holidays and attend things on a rota. Are there any more weddings this year?

I think he would have gone - however the VIP box would have been pretty full for the final with the Presidents of US, Canada and Mexico (as the 3 host nations) plus the RF of Spain and I presume President of Argentina. Plus the FIFA bigwigs

I did wonder if not attending the semi-final might have been a government/ political decision of not wanting William pictured with Argentinian government officials after some of the public threats regarding the Falklands.

deeahgwitch · 21/07/2026 14:03

Interesting point there @Lundere William not attending because of the optics and diplomacy. I was surprised he didn’t go and bring George and Charlotte ( if they wanted to go ) as he is a genuine football fan.
