Today I'm dressed like an old lady 😂

I hasten to clarify that I am an old lady! I'd love to claim "I don't know how this happened" - but I know exactly. I needed to go to The Outdoors but was hot and tired.

A weather-appropriate dress happened to be top of a nearby pile (yes, I need an actual wardrobe) and it is a very comfortable dress. Double muslin, basically a long, crinkled sack with an under-bust gather in place of any shaping. I'm not wearing a bra, which, at my age, only adds to the shapelessness.

As I looked so very drab, I felt I should add lively footwear. Trouble is, I needed said footwear to be flat and - yes, comfortable. The shoes best meeting my need were metallic gold, basket-weave loafers. And now I understand why old women so often wear shapeless dresses with incongruous footwear! Comfort imperative; too tired to style it but making a low-effort attempt at interest.

I probably need some better quality sacks 😳 and a pair of less flashy loafers.

Feel free to share your not-very-successful attempts at looking like you made an effort when you made none at all - or, alternatively, chortle quietly at my hapless discovery of my inner bag-lady.

Keiller butterscotch?
My grandmother used to keep this in a tin. It was lovely.

( Autocorrect wants "killer" butterscotch, which is entirely different. )

Oh my word! My granny used to have a quarter of these every week. Wrapped individually like little gold bars. Sadly you can't buy them any longer.

And I'm gutted to learn I'm also older than Werther's Originals.

Hatty65 · 08/07/2026 19:39

I am wearing a shapeless sack today and am still too hot. I've resorted to 'Jelly bras' which are not underwired and do nothing to hoick my 44D boobs up from dangling around my waist band but they ARE jolly comfy and that's what's most important now.

I am annoyed it is so hot. Previously I have spent the last 9 months or so in what my Nan would have called 'play clothes'. Basically elastic waisted leggings and an old t shirt.

I now only wear orthopaedic looking shoes that are fugly but comfortable. My 21 year old self who danced in high heels is shuddering at my footwear choices but I'm now too old to care.

This is the best thread ever and I truly laughed the whole way through.

Caught myself in a midi dress with socks and Birkenstocks and unshaved legs the other day 🤣 I just don't care any more 🤣

Oh god that reminds me of the time many years ago when our dog rolled in fox poo and my DDad didn’t want to bath him so did a quick spot-clean and then doused him in his Old Spice aftershave. The smell was indescribable.

😂😂😂😂

Today I am wearing navy wide legged cords (pull on), a burgundy thermal long sleeved top, mustard yellow and green patterned woolly socks, fur lined suede Birkenstocks and a woolly jumper with a lovely picture of rabbits on it. No bra. It’s cold here as you can tell, lol, but I really do love the age I am and that I embrace wearing what I like and being comfortable.

I actually saw a woman out yesterday dressed in burgundy tracksuit bottoms, really thick fleece lined, a navy long sleeve top and those Ugg furry slippers. Slippers in the street. Well, on a bus. And she was very early 20s.

This is 100% me. It’s great isnt it! I’m truly happy about it. I used to wear stilletoes and pencil skirts when I was a slip of a thing and spend soo much money on hairdressers. That was fun too.
I do still wear lippie though. Funny that.. can’t go out without lippie, love it!

Gettingbysomehow · 10/07/2026 00:46

I have a superbly comfortable pair of trousers from Cotton Traders that are extremely unattractive and ageing, everyday is a struggle between style or just wearing the trousers. Id say the trousers win 50% of the time.

You sound like Jesse from The Fast Show.

"Today I am mostly dressed like an old lady."

I love colour but I wouldn’t go out bra less.

How does an old lady dress now? Not like old ladies of my youth that's for sure.

I saw 2 waiting for a bus earlier this week. Both wearing coloured chino/ jeans narrow leg one had new balance one had sketcher trainers. Both wore natty colour short padded jackets were a symphony of pink white and orange. Add sunglasses. White hair.

It's a far cry from the last of the summer wine look. Not a plastic rain hood in sight.

You read my mind with the last line..a rain mate my gran wore those in the 70s.

This summer I have devolved into comfy crop top bras, it's less support and more wishful thinking!

And yesterday I was wearing an XL t shirt and checked pajama pants as my outfit. This summer is all about bag lady chic for me!😅

EleanorMc67 · 28/07/2026 20:51

Now I'm worried that I'm going to wake up in five years' time & suddenly feel the urge to buy top-to-toe taupe from Cotton Traders ... 😬!!!

(Rage, rage against the dying of the light!!! And wearing Cotton Traders!)

I did dress for ease & comfort & no ironing today (or ironing ever, ideally!!). Today it was a Vince silk top, M&S linen maxi skirt, & Jigsaw flat sandals - all eBay/Vinted. I get lots of pleasure from my clothes & jewellery & what outfits I wear, even if it's just for me (I haven't even left the house today!).

One thing I really don't get is not wearing a bra or knickers!! I don't get a sense of freedom - or comfort - from it. Quite the opposite - I like the "secure" feeling underwear gives me???!

My equivalent is earrings. Just can't leave the house without wearing them. Even if my legs aren't shaved 🤣

KnitFastDieWarm · 28/07/2026 21:03

I think your outfit sounds nice! I’m late 30s and sew or knit most of my own clothes. Today I’ve been wearing rustic linen balloon trousers with a second hand pair or fisherman’s sandals and a knitted silk top, all in various shades of beige. Yesterday was a brown linen smock dress, red sandals, and a vintage silk scarf in my hair. My vibe these days is 100% ‘brideshead revisited meets eccentric art teacher’ and I’m totally fine with that 😁

Clafoutie · 28/07/2026 21:28

With the summer we’re having, and the way it affects my health, my appearance has very much reached an all time low. I’m just in survival mode at this point.
Your post made me smile though OP, keep on keeping on!

That sounds like a great combination - though I'm wondering which characters in Brideshead Revisited??!!

I loved that series so much - & the costumes were glorious! (I've read the book numerous times - it's my comfort read.) Julia's clothes were especially gorgeous - I'm now imagining you swanning around your kitchen in silver lamé ... & why not?!!

This is the most amusing thing I have read in many a year and cheered me right up! I think I would really like you and can totally relate!!

Thingumie · 28/07/2026 21:46

I’m so happy I found this thread.

I used to be a contender (ish) but now I’m in my 50s I genuinely don’t care anymore. I live in shapeless sacks with a crop top in place of a bra so my wompers are swinging around my knees, and crocs. Yes crocs. Red ones with flowers on. I would dearly love to be able to muster up some dignity but honestly, I just can’t.

I actually think I look quite cool. It’s great being old and delusional!

AliasGracie · 28/07/2026 21:49

Today I wore yoga pants which have definitely seen better days , a shapeless linen shirt and Birkenstocks. I admit to having gone out quite frequently recently with unshaved legs, a thing I would never have dreamed of a couple of years ago. I've given up underwired bras entirely and have also resorted to pull on things which don't give much uplift. I find most bras now hurt my ribs and are very uncomfortable so I often go bra less at home. I've become an absolute slattern.

Arlanymor · 28/07/2026 21:52

I think your outfit sounds great!

I don't know if this counts, but when I was in my early thirties I went into work wearing a lovely little grey jersey dress, tan belt and matching boots. Oh I felt brilliant getting dressed on a lovely summer's morning, popping on to the tube, walking the last half mile to work to enjoy the sunshine... fabulous start to the day. I got to work and went to the ladies before going to my desk just to freshen up a bit after the walking part and then I looked in the full length mirror in the toilets...

I had come to work dressed as a hobbit. I was rocking full Bilbo Baggins style... I was a character either from a book or a computer game. I went from 100 to about -100 in two seconds. I then shuffled my way to my desk (Gollum-style ironically) and sat down before anyone else could see that I was dressed for a quest...

DH isn't wrong 😂😂 Werthers Originals are food for the gods, but one of menopause's many gifts to me was a dairy intolerance. Talcum powder's carcinogenic (though I hardly need to worry about that, I'm falling apart anyway).

I have, however, rediscovered another old-lady standby - Yardley's Freesia & Bergamot body mist. I suddenly started liking its weakly citrus fragrance which, coupled with the fact that it's mostly alcohol, seems to relieve the ... er, mustiness that plagues me these days. I'm probably fooling myself, but it's cheap enough in multipacks.

It'd be a bit much to spray Coco Chanel all over when I feel a bit warm.

After a few years of being unavailable, Neal’s Yard have finally restocked its non- carcinogenic ( apparently) lavender and tea tree talcum, which sounds peak Old Lady, but is actually amazing. It really helps when the Cotton Traders trousers chafe. BUT it is now considerably smaller and costs FIFTEEN bloody pounds.

it’s gorgeous isn’t it? one of my favourites. I think my Brideshead vibe is actually closer to that of the male characters - I wear lots of rumpled linen shirts and high-waisted trousers and little cravat type things 😁clearly I was a slightly fey gent in a past life

(although now you mention it, sliver lame might be just what my aesthetic is missing…)

Ah, so more Charles or Sebastian! Or the the very arch Anthony Blanche ...

Sorry for derailing the thread entirely away from Cotton Traders!!!
