Today I'm dressed like an old lady 😂

I hasten to clarify that I am an old lady! I'd love to claim "I don't know how this happened" - but I know exactly. I needed to go to The Outdoors but was hot and tired.

A weather-appropriate dress happened to be top of a nearby pile (yes, I need an actual wardrobe) and it is a very comfortable dress. Double muslin, basically a long, crinkled sack with an under-bust gather in place of any shaping. I'm not wearing a bra, which, at my age, only adds to the shapelessness.

As I looked so very drab, I felt I should add lively footwear. Trouble is, I needed said footwear to be flat and - yes, comfortable. The shoes best meeting my need were metallic gold, basket-weave loafers. And now I understand why old women so often wear shapeless dresses with incongruous footwear! Comfort imperative; too tired to style it but making a low-effort attempt at interest.

I probably need some better quality sacks 😳 and a pair of less flashy loafers.

Feel free to share your not-very-successful attempts at looking like you made an effort when you made none at all - or, alternatively, chortle quietly at my hapless discovery of my inner bag-lady.

If you were really dressed like an old lady you'd have a nice cardi on as there is still a chill in the air!

😂 I'll bear it in mind. You're so right: it's essential that the cardi be nice!

Avoid beige linen. Especially on top.
Lest you look like a walking example of the Turin Shroud.

That's it!! Hang on - does the Turin Shroud have polka dots? I've got the hollow eyes and pained expression.

DH says that old ladies use lily of the valley scented talcum powder and eat Wethers originals toffee. Does this apply @GarlicEverywhere ?

FuzzyPuffling · 06/07/2026 21:29

I rather like Werthers Originals.
Although, being invented in 1969, I am older than them.

DH isn't wrong 😂😂 Werthers Originals are food for the gods, but one of menopause's many gifts to me was a dairy intolerance. Talcum powder's carcinogenic (though I hardly need to worry about that, I'm falling apart anyway).

I have, however, rediscovered another old-lady standby - Yardley's Freesia & Bergamot body mist. I suddenly started liking its weakly citrus fragrance which, coupled with the fact that it's mostly alcohol, seems to relieve the ... er, mustiness that plagues me these days. I'm probably fooling myself, but it's cheap enough in multipacks.

It'd be a bit much to spray Coco Chanel all over when I feel a bit warm.

God, really?! I would've sworn my grandparents fed us these in the car when I was small. I wasn't that small!

Keiller butterscotch?
My grandmother used to keep this in a tin. It was lovely.

( Autocorrect wants "killer" butterscotch, which is entirely different. )

Barley sugar was said to ward off travel sickness.
Can you even get barley sugar now?

Edit: yes you can. Thanks Amazon. They are even called " travel sweets".

I love the New York women and Iris is a Queen!
I am a little round female elder these days but as I have always worn slightly eccentric clothes, (I blame the 80s☺️)I'm happily wearing linen sacks of varying vintages.
I hate not wearing a bra though, too painful!

I am most annoyed about the heatwave as we are going to stay in a cottage in Somerset next week and I won't need able to waft around in my new ensembles as the dog will melt at that temperature!

if a beige linen bargain comes my way I usually wear a large and startling necklace or a waistcoat to distract the eye.

I do hope that you all greet other members of this tribe whilst out and about. You meet some fascinating women if you pay a genuine compliment!

Today I am wearing navy wide legged cords (pull on), a burgundy thermal long sleeved top, mustard yellow and green patterned woolly socks, fur lined suede Birkenstocks and a woolly jumper with a lovely picture of rabbits on it. No bra. It’s cold here as you can tell, lol, but I really do love the age I am and that I embrace wearing what I like and being comfortable.

Meadowfinch · 07/07/2026 18:09

An ankle length blue wrap linen skirt - cool and loose, black flat sandals and a fairly intricate short sleeve rose cotton top.

Cool, comfy and just tidy enough for the office.

I draw the line at no bra. The world isn't ready for that. 😁

How does an old lady dress now? Not like old ladies of my youth that's for sure.

I saw 2 waiting for a bus earlier this week. Both wearing coloured chino/ jeans narrow leg one had new balance one had sketcher trainers. Both wore natty colour short padded jackets were a symphony of pink white and orange. Add sunglasses. White hair.

It's a far cry from the last of the summer wine look. Not a plastic rain hood in sight.

Padded jackets!! Please tell me this was somewhere cold.

I'm melting in a very thin Indian cotton top.

Gettingbysomehow · 07/07/2026 18:15

I fell for the loafer craze thinking they would be very french chic. I bought three pairs.
I have not worn any of them even once.

PashaMinaMio · 07/07/2026 18:32

Remember the Tango orange drinks advert on TV years ago! “You’ve been Tangoed!”

Yesterday I wore an orange linen shell top and a toning orange & brown patterned skirt. My sandals were tan leather and my toning costume jewellery was chunky gold and flamboyant!

“You’ve know when you’ve been Tangoed!”

I could be seen a mile off but a conservative lady I don’t know well complimented me on my outfit! We laughed together reminiscing about the crazy Tango adverts! Made my day!

Im all for lily of the valley sprays. They bring back happy memories 😂

"When I am old I shall wear purple and a red hat."
I have worn Cadbury purple for 30 years as it makes my skin and eye colour look great.
Not so much the red hat!
Wear what you love (since passing 50 I also hate bras but can't go without).

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/07/2026 20:31

I dress pretty smart for work..and look like an absolute bag lady at home, lol. At work, it’s heels, smart dresses and yes, underwear. At home I still wear dresses but they are generally maxi slip dresses, cardis and birkies. Underwear generally doesn’t get bothered with. My partner laughs at some of the outfits I wear to walk our dogs as I just don’t care.

Giggorata · 07/07/2026 21:03

Today I am wearing a long cotton lagenlook dress, vertically striped in green blue and purple, like a deckchair, as DH kindly pointed out.
It didn’t go with the bright purple slides I wore to the shop - no worry.
I have numerous cotton and linen sacks dresses, none are beige, some are colourful, quite a few are black, grey or duckshit.

But underneath I am a rainbow!
I got rid of all bar one of my wired bras and bought some rainbow coloured stretchy ones that support enough, and they clash nicely with my bright chub rubs.
If I need a slip for decency with all my sack dresses, I have several brightly coloured saree slips, just replacing the cord with elastic.

Yes we had this too. Or the tins of “Car Sweets” fruity boiled sweets covered in icing sugar, or barley sugar.

I found myself watering the garden wearing a nightdress and my husband’s cardigan. Must get a grip!

No, you don't need a grip! Or a cardigan, unless you're somewhere like the Faroes.

I actually googled 'outfits for a 54 Yr old women' yesterday and it was horrifying! Literally Golden Girls cosplay!😆

Meanwhile I was wearing a cracking pink vintage graphic tee, pink converse and green and purple check trousers that were actually for age 14!😏
