Today I'm dressed like an old lady 😂

I hasten to clarify that I am an old lady! I'd love to claim "I don't know how this happened" - but I know exactly. I needed to go to The Outdoors but was hot and tired.

A weather-appropriate dress happened to be top of a nearby pile (yes, I need an actual wardrobe) and it is a very comfortable dress. Double muslin, basically a long, crinkled sack with an under-bust gather in place of any shaping. I'm not wearing a bra, which, at my age, only adds to the shapelessness.

As I looked so very drab, I felt I should add lively footwear. Trouble is, I needed said footwear to be flat and - yes, comfortable. The shoes best meeting my need were metallic gold, basket-weave loafers. And now I understand why old women so often wear shapeless dresses with incongruous footwear! Comfort imperative; too tired to style it but making a low-effort attempt at interest.

I probably need some better quality sacks 😳 and a pair of less flashy loafers.

Feel free to share your not-very-successful attempts at looking like you made an effort when you made none at all - or, alternatively, chortle quietly at my hapless discovery of my inner bag-lady.

I find I often look like I have dressed entirely from an outdoor clothing or garden centre. PRACTICAL things. Yesterday was mainly in gym wear because I am one of the middle aged women who mostly populate the local gym these days and sports clothing is wonderfully comfortable.
I often muse on the changes in my lifetime. My parents wore shoes. Always. Now virtually everyone right up to very old age is in trainers.
So yesterday was yoga pants, trainers and a t shirt. Today will be wide leg printed trousers and a t shirt and birkie type sandals.
I have an 85 year old aunt who always looks amazing. Flowy, arty and bright clothes with funky trainers and massive square sunglasses. I wanna be her.

OMG @Gettingbysomehow! Whyyy?? Why did somebody even make this nondescript crinkled, stretch polyester 'cardigan' and matching pull-on trousers? It's not as if you can't get wash 'n' wear co-ords anywhere else, and most of the others at least look like contemporary clothing.

Anyone choosing to wear that outfit is automatically obliged to team it with ostentatious but comfortable shoes 😂

Today I am wearing a blue and turquoise swirly dress that was bought in Naples, but is giving old (Nonna) lady vibes. When I return from work, I will be changing into a black and beige trapeze dress that I refer to as my Grayson Perry look. At 62, I think I can do as much Old Lady as required.

Maybe like my penny loafers 😂

Yes we had this too. Or the tins of “Car Sweets” fruity boiled sweets covered in icing sugar, or barley sugar.

You can still get them. Simpkins are based in Sheffield and loads of newsagents have a stand with different varieties on them.

Today I am wearing a lovely sack. It’s colourful, it’s cotton, it covers what needs to be covered, but there’s no getting away from the fact: it’s a shapeless sack. A comfortable, shapeless sack.

And I’m wearing it with comfortable trainers.

Where’s my pension book?

Lily of the Valley, now that is a blast from the past
I think my first ever ‘perfume’ though it was actually perfume was Tweed 🤣 followed by Tramp as I thought that sounded far more edgy.
It came in a big bottle and you splashed it on rather than sprayed it.
I have no idea what it smelt like but I can guarantee it smelt a million times better than that vile Old Spice. Now that was revolting.
I’m working today and I’m wearing a green asymmetrical dress from Sainsbury’s. I will be wearing my comfortable tan sandals with it and several pieces of jewellery.
My days of cramming my feet into uncomfortable shoes have gone.

FuzzyPuffling · 08/07/2026 08:42

Oh "Tweed" perfume! My first one too.. bought for me by an early boyfriend. No idea why he thought I was in the least "tweedy".

I have had to change my style in the past couple of years, when I moved from Remote Country Area ( walking trousers or shorts and wellies) to smallish city. I can wear dresses again! Woo hoo!

FuzzyPuffling · 08/07/2026 08:47

I just checked what Google thought i should be wearing, and its camel knitwear, with a lot of mentions of scarves. And a "pop of colour, like burgundy, near the face".

How does an old lady dress now? Not like old ladies of my youth that's for sure.

I saw 2 waiting for a bus earlier this week. Both wearing coloured chino/ jeans narrow leg one had new balance one had sketcher trainers. Both wore natty colour short padded jackets were a symphony of pink white and orange. Add sunglasses. White hair.

It's a far cry from the last of the summer wine look. Not a plastic rain hood in sight.

Last month I found myself thinking how handy and practical a plastic rainhood would be.😳

Oh god that reminds me of the time many years ago when our dog rolled in fox poo and my DDad didn’t want to bath him so did a quick spot-clean and then doused him in his Old Spice aftershave. The smell was indescribable.

Jamtomorrowneverjamtoday · 08/07/2026 09:41

I got some large floaty cotton dresses in dubious prints when I was pregnant in the heatwave last year for about £20 each online…. Vowed they’d go straight to the charity shop.

Obv I’m still wearing them.

😂😂😂 Damp dog, fox shit and Old Spice. Reminiscent of an Essex country pub, circa 1983.

I think the date is about spot-on

CapabilityBrownsHaHa · 08/07/2026 11:25

I loved my linen bin-bag dresses. Had them for decades. Finally ditched them last year after losing some weight and discovering that crinkled beige linen looks a bit too similar to crinkled beige skin.....

I have a renewed love of big, comfy, cotton pants. From a brand recommendation from previous s&b pages (wiararpa)! Still need a bra, sadly, but now buy bamboo pull-on jobs. No wires / hooks here.

Squirrelsnut · 08/07/2026 11:39

I'm planning on wearing black and white palazzos, a vest top and Fitflop sandals.
I'm 56, pale and untoned, but I feel more comfortable in my outfit choices than I ever have before.
No libido = I absolutely don't care if you, random person, thinks I look attractive.
Freedom!!

dudsville · 08/07/2026 11:47

I'm only just about to get showered after having done some chores. It's hot here, so I'm going for baggy linen trousers and a tank, braless, doused in Chanel no5, just so no one mistakes me for someone younger!

PrimRoseLaffington · 08/07/2026 11:55

It wasn't really me making an effort but I thought I looked chic today - like a minor celebrity dashing to the gym, avoiding the press. I put my slightly greasy hair in a messy high bun. I put on a skin-tight orange T-shirt, black leggings and creamy trainers. I topped it off with oversized sunglasses.

It was only to walk the dog but I really thought I looked quite hot.

My DH told me I looked like "A crack addled maniac who'd won some Timmy Mallet sunglasses in a raffle"

Brutal.

Megsdaughter · 08/07/2026 12:27

After losing almost 8st, I have had to hit vinted hard as nothing fitted.
Lots of long cool under the bust dresses that flow, mainly Nobodys Child although my favourite is Sainsburys one.
Todays is black and white patterned worn with black canvas ballet flats (cant wear sandals they rub my feet).
Have to have a bra, but its not wired. Comfy big granny pants.
Hair is a pixie cut after losing loads as a side effect of WLI.
Most obvious granny style is my mobilty walker though, but seeing I was in a wheelchair most of the time lsst year, walking doddery is just fine.

I have a plastic rainhood in my handbag and another in my car! 😱 😁

(I bought when there was a risk of rain when I was due to walk between carpark and airport and didn't want to start a trip with wet or frizzy hair but didn't want to carry a brolly either).

I confess to having wondered if you can still get them. Now I know you can ... and in so many different styles, too! They used to be thin, concertina-folded things, but now many practical shapes are available for different hairstyles.

I'm throwing a few quid at Temu/Ebay as we speak 🌦

You won't regret it, they are really handy things to have stashed! 😁

Aparecium · 08/07/2026 17:29

Old Spice…haven’t smelled that for years. If I seek it out, will it remind me of childhood (Dad’s aftershave) or will it be a destroyer of cosy memories?

Ditto Imperial Leather, Lux, Mum deodorant and Chanel No 5. Difficult to believe that those are grandparent smells. My grandparent smells were Lily of the Valley (Yardley?), honey lozenges, naphthalene mothballs and Flit mosquito spray.

FuzzyPuffling · 08/07/2026 19:08

I really dislike the smell of Imperial Leather, and then there's that annoying little paper bit that bungs up drains...

TheeNotoriousPIG · 08/07/2026 19:20

My mother told me that I would be disowned if I wore a rain mate bonnet, after I was extolling the virtues of them... in my twenties 😁

After a long day at work, I am in a pair of buttoned pyjamas that make me look I have escaped from the 1950's episodes of Call the Midwife!

I always associate older people with dressing smartly, courtesy of having grown up in a village with a lot of them! When I dress a little like they did (a blouse, skirt and American tan tights, also known as 'granny tights' in my youth), I get a lot of surprised looks and friendly comments from strangers, which makes me smile!
