Is this not special enough/expensive enough for my son's wedding?

My son is getting married next year. June wedding. Someone on her recommended this dress for someone else. I went ahead and ordered it - a size smaller as that was all that was available. It has some weight to it and I love it but is it a bit cheapskate for mother of the groom. The money is not www.debenhams.com/product/jolie-moi-angel-sleeve-tiered-hem-maxi-dress_p-3e6c2c44-815f-42c7-b1db-67eae670cce8?colour=Multi&size=10&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22915808283&gbraid=0AAAAABevdS7lom0v68CypUOUtJ7wI713e&gclid=Cj0KCQjwio_RBhDMARIsAJPveNPX9QJHogyDX5JR4S_T4TALqJat6EcPACrQj2f_XntgPAeZTx04zrkaAnTFEALw_wcB

Nice hat, bag jacket and shoes, you'll look lovely. I dont think it's too casual, and unlike many formal motb/g dresses you can wear it again-even on the school run with flip flopsGrin

Whattinger · 10/06/2026 15:37

Why are you asking for opinions so? Just wear the dress. No one cares.

It's a dated, not particulaly stylish dress & i wouldn't dream of wearing it to my child's wedding, but none of that matters because i am not you

I also think needle & thread dresses are nicer.

Wow what a nasty comment. Exactly why I would never start a thread in Style and Beauty.

@extrabeans Tatler says a lot of stuff that’s tongue in cheek! Iconic is probably right - she’s instantly recognizable and we’ve seen her clothes before, so recycling is admirable in some ways. She just over does it!

Her best style moments, in my view, were decades ago. Tatler seems to agree. Only 4 of those pictures were from the last 10 years! So 38 were from at least a decade ago and many several decades ago. As I said, she is what she is.

Fortunately most of us are helpful and supportive on this thread. Wonder why nasty commenters
like this bother to come on MN!

That looks like something I’d do the school run in, with trainers or flip flops. It’s not about the money. It’s just yet another, a bog standard, unspecial floral dress. Sorry, but I think something more structured and formal is required. That’s if you care about such things (which I’m guessing you do seeing as you asked). It’s also totally okay to just wear whatever the hell you want that isn’t white or offensive or too revealing!

How rude, it's lovely. Does it fit? Do you feel good in it?

Auroragirl · 14/06/2026 22:58

I love it. People can’t tell to me it looks like a top end monsoon.
nice hat nice shoes.

the pp said she would wear it on the school run . An £85 rrp dress. 🤷‍♀️🤨

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 15/06/2026 10:38

@Auroragirl In what world is Monsoon top end? Or have anything top end? I never think they are really good enough for mother of the groom.

Katie0909 · 15/06/2026 11:05

With a hat/fascinator, shoes and bag in one of the dress colours and your quality jewellery it will be perfect for a summer wedding. Wear what you feel comfortable in and what suits you rather than what you feel obliged to wear as you will be more relaxed which in turn will help you look amazing.

Then what is?

Monsoon sell wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses as well as dresses suitable for wedding guests (including mother of the bride or groom).

Some people will consider them not high end enough (no problem, up to them) while the rest of us would consider them perfectly suitable. Not all weddings/budgets/expectations/tastes are the same!

My wedding dress was a monsoon one. Fitted and not long. Really suited me. I bought it nwt off ebay for £99.

I think these are some of the nicest wedding dresses I've seen in a long time.

They put me in mind of toned down, unscary high street versions of some of the fabulous dresses and tops at Cawley Studio

Another update girls, I was looking through Needle & Thread's 100% polyester offerings 😃and I have found this. https://www.needleandthread.com/products/peony-bloom-georgette-short-sleeve-gown-peppermint. It has arrived today and I love it. Thoughts please, first one or this one? I ordered 3 more from Needle & Thread - they do a great try on service, however, they are much "fancier" and I don't feel very comfortable in them.

@flowersandmusic I prefer that for a summer wedding. Yes, it’s poly, but it’s got floaty sleeves. Don’t you like any of them?

Edited

I love the Needle & Thread dress. I just want to look as if I have made an effort. I know the bride's mum will wear a very traditional MOB outfit but that just isn't me. I suppose I'm doubting myself but this shape seems to suit my shape best.

Goodness, gorgeous clothes but these Needle Thread people know how to charge, don’t they?

Have you seen Lexy London OP? I saw a feature on them a few days ago and had a quick look at their website. Some really lovely things.

My other ideas might be Pink City Prints and Aspiga.

Having said all this, I think it’s lovely you are making such an effort for the wedding and I imagine you will look lovely (and appropriate) in whatever you end up choosing.

Princesspeaches99 · 28/06/2026 12:29

I love the peppermint one OP, beautiful colours 😍

hahabahbag · 28/06/2026 12:48

Lovely dress. Price is irrelevant if it fits you and looks great on you

https://www.needleandthread.com/products/peony-bouquet-v-neck-cape-gown-peony-pink-multi This was the one I thought I would love but it is too fancy for me.

I love that, so pretty but so expensive.
