Is this not special enough/expensive enough for my son's wedding?

My son is getting married next year. June wedding. Someone on her recommended this dress for someone else. I went ahead and ordered it - a size smaller as that was all that was available. It has some weight to it and I love it but is it a bit cheapskate for mother of the groom. The money is not www.debenhams.com/product/jolie-moi-angel-sleeve-tiered-hem-maxi-dress_p-3e6c2c44-815f-42c7-b1db-67eae670cce8?colour=Multi&size=10&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22915808283&gbraid=0AAAAABevdS7lom0v68CypUOUtJ7wI713e&gclid=Cj0KCQjwio_RBhDMARIsAJPveNPX9QJHogyDX5JR4S_T4TALqJat6EcPACrQj2f_XntgPAeZTx04zrkaAnTFEALw_wcB

If I type someone’s name in, will she automatically see it? It’s just that a poster called

@EleanorMc67

manages to find amazing things for this type of qu.

BunnyLake · 08/06/2026 14:47

It’s lovely. With the right accessories it will be gorgeous. I’d wear it to my son’s wedding.

LivingwithHopenowandforever · 08/06/2026 14:51

Hey OP, at first glance I wasn’t sure but looking at it again if you dress it up well with some killer shoes, bag, hat etc you will look a million dollars. It might not have the price tag associated with people’s ideas of what a MOB/MOG’s outfit should cost but if it fits you like a glove and your family agree KEEP IT!!! Have hair & makeup done also! Between now & the wedding you may find something else without even trying but if you don’t you will look amazing in this dress. Just make sure that your jewellery is something out of the ordinary. Jennifer Behr is a good place to start or look on MyTheresa they have a really good selection plus the sales are on 😉 Malone Souliers has some lovely matching shoes and bags that you can take a look at or Aquazzura. Just make sure you feel fabulous in whatever you choose to wear.

What's the venue and style?

DD is getting married on Saturday, it's a marquee overlooking the beach with a cottage garden theme.

I've gone for a very similar style of dress in sage green and apricot with a cream and floral headband. A hat is very likely to end up in France!

Neuronimo · 08/06/2026 15:20

I think it is really lovely and appropriate. You'll wear it again I should think, since it isn't super formal. I also think that the hem line makes it look less casual.

That looks like something I’d do the school run in, with trainers or flip flops. It’s not about the money. It’s just yet another, a bog standard, unspecial floral dress. Sorry, but I think something more structured and formal is required. That’s if you care about such things (which I’m guessing you do seeing as you asked). It’s also totally okay to just wear whatever the hell you want that isn’t white or offensive or too revealing!

You’d wear that to get your kids from school?

Structured and formal sounds old fashioned to me.

It’s clearly not structured, in fast ifs for high elastane. And I’d also argue it’s not formal either and would need to be dressed up to be, as many on this thread are suggesting.

why does one need to be fashionable on the school run?

Structured and formal makes me think of Business Wear: 80s/90s ‘career woman’ vibe, as seen on Alan Sugar’s The Apprentice and promoted by schools as ‘when you get out into The Real World’ or ‘The World of Work’.

Perhaps I’ve been gone from the U.K. too long! That is totally, 100% what every other mother is wearing during the summer months where I am. It’s an ordinary, floral, lightweight, floaty dress - one garment (easy to put on), cool/breezy, basic colours. Normally worn with a straw hat / sunglasses / flip flops or flat leather sandals / crossbody bag. It’s either this (like a uniform) or workout gear or work clothes. I don’t recognize the “Primark leggings and oversized T shirt” thing - so, wearing what one would wear in normal life to do normal things like take your kids to school and run your errands to a wedding just wouldn’t happen here.

By structured and formal I meant exactly what Kate Middleton wore at the weekend to whomever’s wedding: pleats, defined shoulders and waist, neat collar, high heels, appropriately accessorized. Nobody would wear THAT in daily life!

Comefromaway · 08/06/2026 15:51

On none work days in the summer I would absolutely have worn floaty floral dresses on the school run (private school) BUT they would have been Seasalt et al cotton jersey swing style dresses with a short sleeve. They definitely would NOT have been flouncy with flutter sleeves and other embellishments. That would have just looked plain odd except on prize giving.

Dillydollydingdong · 08/06/2026 15:56

It's lovely

I’ve not seen anyone wearing that kind of dress at the school gates in England and my kids went to private.

What Kate wore is a lot less forgiving than a floaty dress if there’s a few extra pounds to consider.

Well yes obviously it’s not structured, I never said it was.

peachie82 · 08/06/2026 16:53

It’s lovely and fresh and summery and you’ll feel much more comfortable in it than some fussy, structured thing. Add some glam with lovely statement shoes, fancy handbag, jewellery and a hat or hair accessory. And depending on your style, a slash of bright lipstick l!

Alouest · 08/06/2026 16:55

I like the dress and it will look lovely with some fancy accessories. I think it's absolutely fine for your son's wedding.

I would never in a million years have worn something like this to do the school run. I'd have been in jeans/denim shorts and a T shirt most likely.

To me this literally sounds like a list of 'how to look staid', especially if you don't look like Kate Middleton in the first place. I don't see why OP is supposed to try and look like she's from the 1950s. It's ok for her to want to look nice! And collared dresses is really quite a niche look - you can't really think that's the only good look for a wedding?

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 08/06/2026 17:04

I wear dresses most days, so wear them on the school run. I'm wearing a dress right now and on my way to get the kids! But I wouldn't wear a dress with ruffles or a front split. They have the same pattern in a different cut and it shows what a difference those details make - without them looks much more like a work dress to me, whereas with it's much more obviously occasion wear: www.debenhams.com/product/jolie-moi-wrap-front-mesh-maxi-dress_p-0b425531-3859-4480-8f77-b25e193a1cce?colour=Multi

That just shows how interpretations are so different, that doesn’t look anything like a work dress to me.

BunnyLake · 08/06/2026 17:23

I thought I’d google mother of the groom dresses and there’s a right mish mash of styles. Some are awful but one from Etsy is ‘sexy mother of the groom’. I’m not sure that’s an appropriate vibe to be going for 😯 🫣

NeverCouldGetTheHangOfThursdays · 08/06/2026 17:35

I think it's a gorgeous dress and absolutely suitable! You've already said it fits you beautifully and if you're comfortable and feel good wearing it that's all that matters. The price doesn't come into it.

I'll be wearing a similar style to my DD's wedding, with a fabulous pair of Ruby Shoos and a big hat/hatinator/fascinator thingy. Traditional, tailored MOB outfits just aren't me at all and I'd be so uncomfortable wearing something like that.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2026 17:38

I like it a lot - unlike others I’m not keen on very structured rigid formal gear -

DysonHoover · 08/06/2026 17:58

It's really nice.

My MoB dress cost a tenner on vinted!

caringcarer · 08/06/2026 18:01

High heels, a nice hat and expensive bag. Youay also be able to find a little jacket to go with it. It looks lovely. No one will know how much you spent on it.

for clarity, the size small fits like a glove. It has slight padding in the shoulder and is the perfect length. I am torn because I really like it.

Buy it! Buy it! Xxx
