"A Dolomites/Highlands mashup" made me laugh.

@Maireas - that sporran looks like it's made from Guinea Fowl. I've come across fox, rabbit, pigskin, sporrans before but that's maybe a bit more 'out there'. Vegan sporrans also available!

Thank you! I'm going to say that it's certainly an interesting look. His mother Sylvana does look as if she feels the same.
I'm very much looking forward to Marina's wedding...

Following on from my post earlier in the week about the exhibition.

Here are images of the embroidery on the Coronation Gown. One is a sample in a hoop. They had samples of all the motifs.

Have a good time. I appreciated that you were not hurried through so you could take your time.

Maireas · 11/06/2026 16:47

Have fun, @Kirschcherries! The embroidery must be incredible. That tiara! 😍

I think it’s knowing the 000s of hours it must have taken.

Yes, that's such skill and effort.

@Maireasthank you for the link to Marina Windsor at the Earl and Countess of Ancram’s wedding.
i would love to see more photos of the bride and bridal party. The outfit looked interesting, a more alternative take on a wedding dress than Harriet’s dress for sure.
I’m not keen on Marina’s dress.
Or her brother’s outfit 😂

It's quite something, isn't it?! Normally it's the women guests who are careful not to outshine the bride!
The sporran alone is a talking point.....

Thank you for posting those photos of the exhibition @Kirschcherries.
Abs gorgeous.
I think a trip to the UK is on the cards.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 11/06/2026 18:47

Marina's dress is a bit Liesl from The Sound of Music isn't it? Dirndl-adjacent. And she just have been breathing in all night!

Yes, it's not a great fit.

Don't think I've ever seen a dress as tight across the breasts as Marina's. Ouch.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 12/06/2026 16:05

Some photos from the exhibition. It was amazing - such workmanship! And I'm sure this is just a fraction of the ensembles she wore over the years.

Thanks, Deftly - the embroidery on those dresses is amazing, just reflecting on what Kirsch said about the woman hours and skill involved.
I love the dresses in picture 1 - they wouldn't look out of place today.

I went to the exhibition about a month ago, it was incredible. I see they have extended it to next year now.

RomainingCalm · 12/06/2026 16:24

I can't wait to go. Your pictures are lovely @KiIIingMeDeftly.

Pallisers · 12/06/2026 16:36

Thank you for those photos @killingmedeftly I am planning to go through London on a trip home to Ireland so I can go to this exhibit.

I am just about to return two books to the library which were delightful. One was Tiaras A History of Splendor by Geoffrey Munn. Fabulous history of tiaras from earliest times - including hair fashion, and french, british and russian royal tiaras, tiffany etc. Lovely photos.

the other one The Jewels of Elizabeth II by Leslie Field was just fabulous. Chapter titles like Queen Victoria's Bow Brooches and The Duchess of Kent's Corsage Brooch and The Queen's First Necklace with the history of the jewels in question, photos of them worn historically and recentlyish (think it was written in the 80s). I am not in the least bit royalist (I'm Irish) but I am tempted to buy this book because it links the jewels so closely to history - plus they look fabulous. One of the photos, for example, was of Queen Alexandra wearing Victoria's bow brooches on her skirt. She and Q. Mary took the wearing of jewellery ALL the way. https://royalwatcherblog.com/2019/05/16/queen-victorias-bow-brooches/

I also just read James Pope Hennessy's biography of Q. Mary and the Hugo Vickers book about his notes - In Search of Queen Mary (hilarious). So many references to jewels in the bio. I wondered about some of them - for example for her 18th birthday/confirmation Mary of Teck received a gold bracelet from King Edward and a gold clasp with the hair of George III and Charlotte from an uncle and I wonder where those are now? I wonder the same about some of the beautifully embroidered dresses.

Queen Victoria’s Bow Brooches

This month, we are marking the Bicentenary of the Birth of Queen Victoria by featuring her Top 20 Jewels, one for each decade since the Birth of 2nd-longest reigning British Monarch, in the 20 days…

There were a lot of gowns there that I'd seen in pictures but of course those were B&W! It was lovely to see them in full colour, and what colours too! HM wore the entire spectrum.

Also interesting is that her gowns were far racier, for want of a better word, that what royals wear now. So many of them were sleeveless or strapless.

There isn't much from the 80s or 90s but I always think of those as her style wilderness years. She was no longer the young and glamorous queen but Angela Kelly was yet to come along with the colour block look she made her signature look in the 2000s.

Maireas · 12/06/2026 16:38

That Hugo Vickers book is great - very amusing!

Oh but this outfit was probably her personal favourite, accessorised with a corgi or three!

I agree, she kind of lost her style mojo a bit in those years..
The colour blocking was a good idea.
