Impossible to find stylish walking sandals?

I think this probably gets asked every summer but does anyone have any recommendations for a good pair of sandals for lots of walking . I'm tempted to buy an actual pair of hiking/action ones and just accept that they will be ugly. I keep seeing these Fitflop ones advertised and wonder about them

I do have a pair of Fitflop trainers and sandals for work that I find comfortable for all day general wear so maybe that is the way to go but they are just SO utilitarian.

Have I missed a pair out there that are genuinely good for all day walking but do actually look at least quite nice?

Id recommend looking at hush puppies. They are so comfy and I can walk miles in them. They aren’t the prettiest the ones I have but they are so supportive and comfy. I’ll see if I can find a link

Not sure if these are too like hiking footwear for you:

If you are doing some proper walking, rural/coastal, then you need some kind of grip on the sole. A lot of stylish sandals are too smooth on the base and will slip about on some surfaces. They often look better on. Try Go Outdoors (you need to be a member to get better prices, £5?) or Blacks, Cotswolds, Millets, Trespass, Mountain Warehouse etc
Keen sandals are a good idea if you want toe protection but look outdoorsy!

These look good. How much arch support is there? I have one (!) flat foot that needs a lot of help.

@FrostyMorn I also have one slightly flatter foot. I did a lot of research and this came out as one of the good ones according to the reviews. Medium arch. Wore them loads walking on hols and still ok. Fished them out today to wear in London and feels good. I bought the office white as goes with everything

Ooh I like those thank you. Do you find the sole os thick/supportive enough? I do like my Birkenstocks as I said upthread but would like something with an ankle strap and slightly thicker sole.

Birkenstocks do have an ankle strap version :

Hell, yeah, that Compeed Anti Blister stick is just amazing.

I’ve got Timberland Malibu wave sandals in the 2 strap version and the cross over version - comfiest shoes ever and they’ve survived trips around Mexico and Disney world comfortably!

"Barefoot" style sandals can be very comfortable for walking, and some of them look good too. Here's an article reviewing a load of different styles (and it has discount codes, too).

I swear by doc marten Voss II https://www.schuh.co.uk/womens/dr-martens-voss-ii-black-sandals/1753007020/

comfy from first wear. I have two pairs and have done loads of city breaks with 20k plus steps a day. They also come in different colours.

lljkk · 23/05/2026 19:24

it's funny to me, one's idea of "ugly".
Anything uncomfortable and will easily wear out = ugly to me.

A lot of the "stylish" items suggested here are very ugly, therefore. I can't see some of them lasting well for 6 miles of walking every day on all sorts of terrain.

I’m intrigued by how this actually works? What does it do?!

DailyMaui · 23/05/2026 21:43

I have the Blowfish Malibu in gold and they are fab for lots of walking AND looking quite elegant of an evening. I'm on my third year with them.

I also have the Crocs Brooklyn wedge in black which are like walking on air. But they wear off my fake tan and as I'm "Scottish blue" this irritates me.

One of my best comfort buys has been a pair of squishy black flip flops from B&M which cost a fiver. I wore them to work once and people thought they were some fancy brand... Wish I'd bought the cream ones too. They are selling them again this year. They require a certain louche and lazy walking style - you wouldn't want to run for a train in them - but they do serve a certain purpose and are fabulous in extreme heat.

Keen used to do some great city sandals that were brilliant and sound like they might fit your bill so maybe vinted? Ecco do good pretty ones you can walk a few miles in, and these…… oh how I love these and they are so, so comfy!

These are indeed very lovely - not heard of that brand before so thank you!

crackofdoom · 24/05/2026 08:15

I've just bought some Birkenstock Rios on Vinted. They have ankle straps (and are a lovely sparkly silver!), but I notice they're only currently selling them in kids sizes! OK, maybe they do look a tiny bit like the sandals I had when I was eight, but I'm going to style it out 😆

I liked the Rio, wish you could still get them in adult sizes. I have too many sandals anyway for the Scottish climate 😁

Has anyone mentioned Saltwater sandals OP? I have the ones with a thicker rubber sole ‘Swimmer’ I think, and I can walk for miles in them. Lots of colours including metallic if you want something that will also do for evenings. They last for years too. www.salt-watersandals.co.uk/products/swimmer-rose-gold-womens-sandal
