Impossible to find stylish walking sandals?

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 22/05/2026 08:48

I think this probably gets asked every summer but does anyone have any recommendations for a good pair of sandals for lots of walking . I'm tempted to buy an actual pair of hiking/action ones and just accept that they will be ugly. I keep seeing these Fitflop ones advertised and wonder about them

https://www.fitflop.com/uk/en/shop/f-mode-go-leopard-adjustable-webbing-z-strap-sandals-p-E1P#D20

I do have a pair of Fitflop trainers and sandals for work that I find comfortable for all day general wear so maybe that is the way to go but they are just SO utilitarian.

Have I missed a pair out there that are genuinely good for all day walking but do actually look at least quite nice?

You'll have to define nice/stylish for you.
(I quite like the ones you've posted, but tend to go for utilitarian myself and wear Tevas a lot in the warm weather)

I love Tevas too. They look stylish to me.

TallagallaPenguin · 22/05/2026 09:08

Do you mean all day on your feet at work, or all day walking around a city as a tourist, or all day walking across hillsides, mountains and around lakes?

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 22/05/2026 10:41

Sorry. Realised I was obviously too vague..I mean mainly sightseeing - perhaps a bit of coastal/rural walking.

I like tevas etc but for me they are the equivalent of hiking boots which I wouldn't want to wear for a day out that wasn't 'a walk'.

I'd like some that are super comfy and I can walk miles in but would still look good when I'm sitting in a beach bar/pavement cafe.

I'm going on holiday this summer just me and DH for the first time in over 20 years. We'd like to use the opportunity to do lots of walking without DC moaning but I'd also like to be a bit glam if possible. I suspect there is no perfect solution

For sightseeing I can walk in Birckenstocks all day but appreciate some people can’t. For anything more rugged I wear Keen sandals but you are firmly in hiking sandal territory there

I've been looking at some Keen sandals on Vinted!

Tbf I also could probably wear my Birkenstocks all day or the pair of fltflops I already have but just wonder if there's a step (ha!) up in comfort with going full outdoorsy

Obviously everyone has different feet that find different fit of shoes comfy, but I have found my old Blowfish gladiator style sandals great for wearing for wearing all sorts of places, all day. Pretty sure I wore a pair around disney which is a lot of walking! And I live rurally so have stood up to various surfaces, running after kids etc. Decent grippy sole and comfy fit (I have pretty wide feet). They aren't hiking sandals, but should be good for decent length walks on grassy terrain.

The closest ones I can find are these:
Buy Blowfish Malibu Black Macarah-B Regular Fit Strappy sandals from the Next UK online shop
or
Buy Blowfish Malibu Cream Luster 3 Embroidered Sandals from the Next UK online shop

I've had a few pairs but not bought new ones for a couple of years (so they have also worn well as I wear a lot in the summer!)

Ooh I like those thank you. Do you find the sole os thick/supportive enough? I do like my Birkenstocks as I said upthread but would like something with an ankle strap and slightly thicker sole.

I recently bought some Ecco ones I love, very comfortable & I’m prone to Achilles tendonitis so can’t wear alot of flat sandals for walking any distance in. Mine are quite outdoorsy but are pretty colours and quite stylish. But Ecco also do different styles like:

Believe me (and I know it's not what you asked), light slip on trainers are your best friend for walking. Sandals, unless they are the outdoor walking variety like Merrills etc. will cut into you, your feet slip down, feet swell and every strap will be agony in very hot weather. I never use sandals for walking anymore, too many blisters and rubbed bits!

But if you found a pair that you can break in, are very comfortable and appeal to you then go for it. I reserve sandals for evenings out where not too much walking is involved.

We are all different I know, so am just giving my 2c.

Weefloofy · 22/05/2026 13:20

I think Teva Tirra are nice to look at, are very comfortable, and multi use. I’ve got these in black, olive, and two shades of blue. I pick then up in the sale or eBay. I think they are fine for coastal paths followed by a cafe, as well as normal sightseeing. I like how adjustable they are (can’t get on with the Ecco hiking style as they have a kind of fixed mesh toe bit).

I would also suggest the fitflop hykers for comfort and versatility, but I dont think they are particularly attractive.

Saturnista · 22/05/2026 13:23

I’m a huge fan of fitflops. Wore them a lot when I had plantar fasciitis and am now a convert. I’m in my late 50’s and fairly fit - managed 27k steps in them in holiday earlier in the year and we averaged 15-20k every day. I now have their boots and trainers and they easily handle my daily 10k dog walks. I’ve looked on eBay and Vinted for ones that are more stylish and in different colours. Thy are worth every penny - taking 3 pairs on holiday to Madeira to tackle some of the Levadas!

YorkshireAndCream · 22/05/2026 13:23

I haven’t personally tried them but these were recommended to me for that purpose and do look like they would be comfortable: https://www.net-a-porter.com/product/46376663163041147

I love my Tevas. I have a variety of styles, some more hiking friendly, others much more of a normal sandal but I find them all very comfortable (and I do a lot of walking!). The 'hurricane' style of Tevas is much more 'walking-boot-but-sandals'), but the originals are much more for day-to-day wear but still well fitting to the foot. I like the hurricane style the best for comfort... I've just bought this pair I'll link Peach Tevas but almost bought these pink tevas. These are the teva originals Teva originals.

With Tevas I find they look a lot nicer on the foot than they do off the foot!

The soles are thick enough for me, not really solid but probably about the same thickness/support as my casual trainer. Its definitely not the same level of grip and support as proper hiking ones, but for shoes that don't look designed for hiking, they have done a great job for me when I've ended up walking lots.

I agree, ankle straps (and the big toe bit too) needed to help your foot not slide about as much to stay on securely.

Bit disappointed by the colour combinations this year! As I said, been a few years since I last bought them. On my third pair now. And feel colours in previous years have been nicer if you manage to find an older pair on vinted or something.

LittlePinkWeed · 22/05/2026 13:39

Have a look at Merrell.

I bought Harbor Backstrap last year - they're less rugged-looking than normal walking sandals. I got them in Sports Direct but be aware that they don't accept returns, so you can't try them on at home to see if they're comfortable.

I like the peach ones. I have black hurricanes that are about 8 years old. They come out every summer and are so useful. I think they're just standard backpacker chic (same as Birkenstocks).

StrongandNorthern · 22/05/2026 15:13

I love Tevas, and Merrells.
The older I get the more I realise that NO ONE LOOKS AT YOUR FEET!
Honestly .... think of a recent day out/night out ... then try to remember what people were wearing ... then, try and remember what they had on their feet ... It doesn't matter. No one notices
Be comfy!

I have some sandals (Rieker AntiStress) that I buy every two or three years and wear for summer dog-walking. Comfortable? Very. Stylish? Not the worst I've seen, because they are slightly daintier than many, so they look okay with jeans, shorts and simple dresses.

EmmaStone · 22/05/2026 16:52

Birkenstocks and slim Tevas here. I love that I can chuck the Tevas in the washing machine, wear them in the sea, walk for miles in them etc.

SummerFleurs · 22/05/2026 17:38

I love a pair of Keen Elles. Happily take them as my only footwear on summer trips. If needed, I’ll take some fancy sandals but if I can get away with it, I won’t

teresamendoza · 22/05/2026 18:24

I bought these in black a few years ago, honestly the comfiest sandals I own, they've been on every summer sightseeing holiday, and go with almost everything. I liked them so much I bought them in tan too.
Had lots of compliments and enquiries on where they're from.
