Ideas for a flattering London summer wedding dress after a split

PithyBeaker · 20/04/2026 13:02

I would LOVE some ideas for gorgeous dresses that might work for a London summer wedding. Context is that I just split from partner I was expecting to go to the wedding with so I’d like to look smashing and like I DNGAF. I’m not much of one for dressing up and have nothing to wear. The couple are old friends from uni and there will be many old faces there. I’m almost 5,10 (so most dresses in shops are too short) and a size 10. Don’t want to wear heels. Thanks in advance!!!

The Karolina Ozolinsiute site is so very frustrating, though. There’s almost never anything new, and most pieces seem to have been sold out for years. (It always makes me feel there’s a secret to getting them that I’m not in on.)

Would you really front up at someone’s wedding wearing that?

I thought the brief was 'I’d like to look smashing and like I DNGAF.' In my opinion that fits the brief, but we all have different interpretations, I guess.

I do think it's odd (not just on this thread, but on many others) that people always assume that a "London wedding" will inevitably be a very cool, very stylish (for those in the know of what is classed as "London-stylish"), very laidback affair ...

(The same wild generalities seem to be made about Irish weddings - apparently everyone is so dressed up that the Reformation dress posted above would look low-key?!!! Not the numerous ones that I have been a guest at - & I am Irish!)

For all we know (& it's strange that hardly anyone has asked for more details of what type of wedding it will be, etc), the bride's family could be coming from Shetland & the groom's from Scarborough - & the uni friends could all be visitors to London too???

@PithyBeaker - where is the wedding, & the reception afterwards, going to be held? Is there a suggested dress code &, if not, have you any idea of how relaxed/dressy the vibe might be? And how many guests will be wearing such cutting-edge fashion that their attire will be passé by the end of the evening ...?!!!

Also, I've just realised you mentioned that dresses are often too short for you. Does that mean you prefer to wear something ankle-length? And that a short dress is out?

I think that people are just offering suggestions. I know that my thoughts process is along the lines of 'OP asked for ideas, Maybe something like one of these?' & if OP then comes back & says 'Those are way too glam' then fair enoughGrin

I apologize if I've misread your tone but it comes across a bit like 'I know London weddings, & Irish ones, so I'm allowed to post. Others that haven't been to one, not so much'.

OP, will the wedding be taking place in a church, with a hotel reception afterwards?

church daytime then evening reception at one of the Inns of Court

The model is tall, slim and dark. It's an uninspiring and uninspired dress.

I don’t agree. And my sister who works in fashion and lives in Paris loves it (she is wayyy more in the know than I am)

I just posted on another wedding thread that I've worn this to a couple recent ones - this colour is on sale and squeaks in on budget.

That is an absolutely stunning dress!

That sounds fabulous!

An evening reception at one of the Inns will be lovely!

The combination of a church in the City and a reception at one of the Inns is a good frame for considering what to wear.

I would suggest not full length.

Which colour do you think you look your best in?

The model looks stunning in the dress - she's wearing it, not the other way round.

Each to their own. I don't think the model looks "stunning" and it's a boring dress.

I think she meant doesn’t give a fuck about the ex, rather than she doesn’t give a fuck about the bride. I could be wrong and she will correct me, in which case your dress suggestion is spot 0n.

At the risk of sounding like Chat GPT, that update changes things.

I think slightly more conservative if it’s a church wedding, and more so if it’s catholic/orthodox, but even at an Anglican church wedding, I would tend to have covered shoulders (is this is just me being old-fashioned?) And churches can be cool, even on hot days. But I think you can still lean into a bit of glamour. I like this and would wear it to a church wedding, perhaps with a cover-up for the ceremony. Then as it is for the reception (my only frame of reference for Inns of Court is Oxbridge College weddings which in my experience are pretty much anything goes after the chapel ceremony.)

Not yet… I’m going to Paris in a week so going to see if I find anything there. If not, it’s this as a solid back up

🤣 def not trying to suggest I DNGAF about the bride, that vibe wouldn’t fly. I meant more just I want to look really good and not like I wish I had a date.

they have a shop on the Kings Road. The ladies in my local store are really helpful and will do a personal styling session for you. They have some lovely stuff that you don’t see everywhere.

These seem a bit too pastel for me…

They have lots of bright stuff in store - there’s a lot of stuff in the shop that’s not on the website

Oooh if you’re going to Paris do try and go to some of the depot ventes to try the vintage designer dresses. You could get something amazing. Also maybe just go round Bon Marché/Galeries Lafayette/Printemps and see what takes your fancy.

I still think the Farm Rio is lush though

Ilovemsrachel · Today 19:16

I’m obsessed with this dress but wouldn’t wear it later in the summer than May in London owing to the sleeves. Keep waiting for it to come on sale though, it’s gorgeous and the silk feels amazing
