Is this dress dated?

I bought it in 2015, Star by Julian McDonald. It’s floaty fabric with light texture, kimono style. I loved it at the time but can work out if I am just nostalgic about it and it’s quite dated, or is it one of those style that has never been in / out of trend and therefore is as current as it ever was?

Is this dress dated?

No sorry , it's had its day. Anything over 10 years old I chuck.

😱

ihatecatlitter · 08/03/2026 08:18

I love it! I think you look great - it’s classic and stylish

Crwysmam · 08/03/2026 09:39

It suits you, it’s a timeless colour and if it’s comfortable it is effortless to wear. Cloth s are about confidence.
I had a clear out of my wardrobe a couple of years ago and threw out a load of wide leg trousers thinking they would never be wearable again. How wrong I was.
I now have a policy of keeping anything that is classic, fits perfectly and is a non fashionable colour. They always come back into fashion.
Well made classic clothing looks stunning year after year. Cheap fashionable stuff lasts a season.
I firmly believe that stylish women look stylish because they wear well fitted/tailored clothes rather than what’s in fashion.
Style is for the individual, fashion is for the masses.

Try and remember (without looking at photos) what your friends were wearing last time you were out together, I bet you can't.

Oh I bet I can Grin

@Floisme 😀I think Flo, as a stalwart of the S&B threads, you are much more likely to remember people's clothes than most. I constantly shock myself with how much I forget what most of my friends wear unless I particularly admire it, if it's nice but not outstanding it disappears from my memory very quickly.

Floisme · 08/03/2026 11:33

Ha! I wouldn't say it's the skill I'm most proud of @FruAashild but yes, that's me.

outerspacepotato · 08/03/2026 11:50

It's not really dated but it's not a classic either. It can go almost anywhere and looks good on you and also looks comfortable. I would keep and start wearing the heck out of it.

I can’t work out if this is a joke or not?

I hope you donate? Or if you know anyone teenage to mid 20s I find they're often hungry for stuff from 70s, 80s, 90s or 00s. I love seeing my younger relatives in my old favourites

Personally I think a v neck wrap is a classic. And this is a pretty nice one which really suits OP.

Re "ageing" my controversial take is that most women look pretty close to the age they actually are, although fatter women tend to appear a bit younger in the face. Women can look good and their age at the same time.

80smonster · 08/03/2026 13:35

It doesn’t scream fashion to me. What’s it for? Not a fan of polyester myself, so I’d definitely send to the chazzer shop.

MissAustenMadeAQuilt · 08/03/2026 13:54

Do you hang out with catwalk models, dress designers and fashion journalists who might throw their hands up in horror at seeing you in something that is not on trend.

If so, then don't wear it as no-one wants to be on the receiving end of hands waving in horror at them.

If you don't, wear it. It looks lovely on you, shows your figure to advantage and can be dressed up or down.

I'm the wearer, bugger the starer is a maxim we should repeat to ourselves.

namechangeabc123 · 08/03/2026 14:04

I think it’s dated. I remember when there were a lot of those around, so I associate it with a trend that is over.

Speak for yourself!

if your the poster that said it will make you look older - that follows its about shame, what else is it?

Shame attached to looking like an older woman is very much your own personal interpretation, @Jellytotsapplepie

I am an 'older' woman (61) and wouldn't want to dress like a younger woman or an even older woman. I'm currently in the process of shopping for a dress to wear to a summer wedding and I'm navigating a lot of fine lines.

I have nothing against younger women, BTW. I just don't want to try to look like one at work or when out in the evening.

M103 · 08/03/2026 15:15

It looks great!! Definitely wear it.

Mumofteensandcats · 08/03/2026 15:15

I really like it, lovely colour and really suits your figure 😍

Mumofteentwins · 08/03/2026 15:31

I don’t recall this style being around so I’d continue to wear it for work in the summer probably. I wouldn’t wear it to a high fashion type event.

I have a lot of dresses that I only wear for work in the summer and as there aren’t a lot of days you can wear them in the UK, I’ve had some of them for probably 10 years so I continue to wear them as I think they still look good. If I get something out after not wearing it for a year and it doesn’t feel right I’d get rid of it.

What sort of hospitals do you attend?!

Search dark hospital gown and you’ll see

TheChosenTwo · 08/03/2026 17:57

It does suit you but it does also look like dresses I had about 10 years ago so I’d just think you loved that particular style. I’d struggle with shoes to go with it and I think I’d end up donating it personally, it’s not something I’d wear now.

OneBreezyHelper · 08/03/2026 21:28

ScaredOfFlying · 08/03/2026 08:16

Wow. I’m glad you’re not seeing that judgmental twat any more.

that's a odd way to react if someone just points out that your outfit is not the most flattering on you, and is actually making a compliment.

babasaclover · 08/03/2026 21:30

You’ve got a cracking figure and whilst the dress is lovely it does nothing for you.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 09/03/2026 05:58

Bluegreenbird · 07/03/2026 17:37

It’s lovely. Suits your figure. Very simple and timeless. Depends if you’re going to a fashionista event or just out with normal people I suppose.

100% agree. Lovely dress, OP!

ArtesianWater · 09/03/2026 06:01

It looks dated to me but only because I had a couple of similar dresses around 2015 and it reminds me of that time in my life. I don't think it would look dated to most people as it's a fairly classic style and plain colour. It looks nice on you too.

StarlightLady · 09/03/2026 08:21

I would describe it as timeless. I think it needs accessorising though. Maybe a chunky bold necklace?

I think that would actually make it look very dated!
