Is this dress dated?

I bought it in 2015, Star by Julian McDonald. It’s floaty fabric with light texture, kimono style. I loved it at the time but can work out if I am just nostalgic about it and it’s quite dated, or is it one of those style that has never been in / out of trend and therefore is as current as it ever was?

Is this dress dated?

I have just bought a pair of silver toe post kitten heel mule sandals, which help to give it more modern edge. When first bought, it came with a tie belt and I wore it with platform stilettos. Lately, I wore it with flat quilted leather slides on holiday or flat gold sandals and a slim waist belt, Reiss H shaped. The buckle is gold, so not ideal with new sandals.

I would put the tie belt back and wear flat ballet pumps.

It looks like a dressing gown .

FruAashild · 07/03/2026 18:01

I think it's a nice classic shape and suits you, you look very elegant. It's a beautiful dress and TBH most people aren't that clued up about fashion that they'd care if it was fashionable or not. Try and remember (without looking at photos) what your friends were wearing last time you were out together, I bet you can't.

I’d donate. I’m surprised you wore it on holiday, it’s not a holiday dress. I think unless money is very tight, you can do a lot better.

Depends on the holiday surely.

Wow. There’s nothing wrong with being an older woman. It’s a beautiful classic.

Thats what i thought…whats the shame in being older women

Jamfirstest · 07/03/2026 18:12

I dunno but it’s lovely and suitable for a range of occasions don’t get rid

Positivepositron · 07/03/2026 18:14

Huh? I’m older, no one said there was any shame in it, but most women don’t wish to look beyond their years and there is nothing more ageing than wearing dated clothes; I’m older, so I’m clearly not going to day it’s shameful, nor did I.

I can,I pay attention to my friends, them overall, what they say the expressions on their face and I also notice what they are wearing, I don’t judge it, either positively or negatively, most people have a certain look they stick to, but I recall what people wear, yes.

Speak for yourself!

if your the poster that said it will make you look older - that follows its about shame, what else is it?

Changednameagain999 · 07/03/2026 18:19

I would never wear it but I’m not very stylish.

Thelankyone · 07/03/2026 18:20

On the aging thing op where I said I thought it made you look older than your years, your skin makes me think a woman in her forties, the dress makes me think you’re in your fifties. Late 50s.

and I suspect that’s older than you are.

Magicisuponus · 07/03/2026 18:21

i like it and it suits you - one of those perfect finds that you can wear over and over again.

It’s not shame, I’m in my fifties, I don’t want to look like I’m in my 70s. Not because I think it’s shameful to be in your 70s. But because I’m not, and I don’t want to look like I am;

im beyond stunned people are attacking for that, I’d have assumed most women don’t wish to look a couple of decades older than they are. But clearly not.

SwedishEdith · 07/03/2026 18:22

I like it and I think it looks good on you. But, if you keep picking it up and putting it back, it's probably time to let go of it. If you still reach for it and wear it, I assume you feel happy wearing it so keep it.

I don’t think about it…

what is it then if not shame?

luckylavender · 07/03/2026 18:23

It’s timeless. Wear it

pimplebum · 07/03/2026 18:25

It’s lovely , classic

SwedishEdith · 07/03/2026 18:25

What's it made of? Natural fibres - I'd keep. Polyester - donate.

Westfacing · 07/03/2026 18:25

It looks far too big for you and the length just below the knee is very frumpy, IMO

It doesn't signal a particular era so not 'dated' as such but it's not a good look

Sigh, look I’m not up for a pile on, if you feel I think it is shame in not wanting to look a couple of decades older than I am, and you like to look significantly older than you are, then colour me covered in shame and crack on, fill your boots. I will take the accusation. 😂

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 07/03/2026 18:30

Looks like a hospital gown
