Is this dress dated?

I bought it in 2015, Star by Julian McDonald. It’s floaty fabric with light texture, kimono style. I loved it at the time but can work out if I am just nostalgic about it and it’s quite dated, or is it one of those style that has never been in / out of trend and therefore is as current as it ever was?

Is this dress dated?

I don't think it's either fashionable or unfashionable, I'd say it's classic and for people who are not really interested in fashion.

I love the colour but it’s a little dated. Im
the same, I have some lovely dresses that i am fond of and it’s hard to let go.

I always put it in a 90s perspective as that’s when I was a teen. Would 1990 you wear something from 1979?

1970s stuff was fashionable in the 1990s. I used to wear a skinny Charlie's Angels top (the design the MN logo borrowed from) flared jeans and platform shoes in my 20s. And go to 1970s disco and funk nights.

Who cares, it is elegant and suits you well.

@KindleSchmindle Because your girls are wearing clothes that were on trend in the 90’s - this trend has come round again. The OPs dress has never been on trend.

IMO it’s fair to say a flowy, waterfall type sleeve, chiffon-y material and modest hemline would be more in the style of an older women - it’s not ageist or shaming to say that. It’s what we see in everyday life, but on here it’s a sin to state the bloody obvious without preluding it with a grovel about not all older women wearing the same thing. Exhausting. Can’t understand why @Thelankyoneis getting so much heat.

Thelankyone · 07/03/2026 18:36

Yes I would. And I know this is mumsnet and peiple attack you over the slightest thing, but wow. This is something else. Attacked because you say something is ageing. Unbelievable. You want to look much older than your years crack on. I don’t. If that makes me some sort of elderly shaming shrew, so be it. I’m in my fifties and don’t want to look like I’m in my 70s. What a crime.

I have never ever heard anyone say to a man “that ages you” and you know that very well

KindleSchmindle · 07/03/2026 19:37

To be fair, we do have a shorthand expression of “dad type clothing” in our house - but my DH is a dad (and looks gorgeous in whatever he wears Smile He is a jeans and T shirt type def not chinos (sp?) and polo shirts. But it’s nothing to do with clothes making him look older, it’s just his style is casual. Some men look better in chinos or polo shirts as it’s their style more, IYSWIM.

@scobei see what you’re saying but I’ve (and my DCs when old enough) have been wearing my clothes inc from the 90/00/10s for the last 30 years or so! If it fits and you like it, crack on I say.

@PhaedraWas Ihave a lovely paisley pattern type maxi wrap skirt from Laura Ashley from the 70s(?) which I love to wear. Looking forward to getting it out for spring.

scobe · 07/03/2026 20:00

@KindleSchmindleI agree with ‘if it fits and you like it crack on!’ but makes this topic (S&B) rather redundant doesn’t it 😉

DancingNotDrowning · 07/03/2026 20:13

It’s dated but you have a great figure so I suspect you could make most things look good.

if you do keep it, it looks like it’s still got the string belt loops on, if so snip them off

owlpassport · 07/03/2026 20:21

It's fine for work, or maybe like an evening reception for your DH's colleague. But I wouldn't reach for it for any other occasions. It is a bit dated, but apart from that I think you could just find nicer dresses. It also does look polyester, so I'd probably donate it.

mondaytosunday · 07/03/2026 21:05

I think if you add a wide belt it will improve it immensely. It’s not dated.

dudsville · 07/03/2026 21:22

I think it's a really pretty dress, but I also just watched an old episode of Moonlighting, and Cybil Shepherd would have rocked that dress.

WonderingWhatWillHappen · 07/03/2026 21:24

I think it's important to wear things that flatter your shape and are comfortable and the dress looks like both. It looks good on you.

Trendiness comes and goes but if you know what works for your shape and your vibe, you can always rock that.

Studyunder · 07/03/2026 21:34

I think it a classic cut and flattering. Below the knee/mid calf looks hideous in pretty much everyone.

It’s the most flattering length for me at 5ft 8. A lot of taller people think this.

Just below knee/knee length look completely wrong on me.

Floisme · 07/03/2026 22:42

KindleSchmindle · 07/03/2026 18:49

See to me, this is always a classic (esp tweed ans lined Grin) and stylish rather than fashionable. I love A line skirts as they suit me and have worn them all my life whatever decade.

Sorry I missed this earlier on. I agree with you that it’s a stylish look but what I was trying to say was that yesterday it also felt contemporary when I hadn’t expected it to.

OneBreezyHelper · 08/03/2026 01:55

Thelankyone · 07/03/2026 17:43

I do think wearing stuff like that is quite ageing though, it makes me think you’re an older woman just by your dress. And likely older than you are. I’d also assume it’s something you have had a very long time in your wardrobe, I’d not think it was new,

None of that matters when you actually SEE the person, it becomes pretty obvious if they are young/ old just by looking at them.

elfendom1 · 08/03/2026 02:20

It is a beautiful colour, I wouldn't 'date it'. Just the obvious elastic in the waist bothers me.But I think you love it and the colour wins, so go forth in said dress.

Muffinmam · 08/03/2026 06:19

I think this dress is classic and doesn’t date. However, you have a beautiful figure and the dress appears a bit too big. I know that’s the style.

I had a similar dress years ago and a guy I was seeing told me it made me look a lot bigger than I was.

EverythingGolden · 08/03/2026 07:27

TiredofLDN · 07/03/2026 17:31

I think it’s quite dated- and not in that cool 90s/ early millennial way that’s very on trend- sorry OP!

Dd tells me that 2016 is the new 2026 is a current trend. She told me the other day my trainers were very 2016 which was a good thing apparently.

WonderingWhatWillHappen · 08/03/2026 07:54

So intrigued by all the 'just below the knee looks bad' comments. That's definitely the most flattering length for me. I've embraced the midi length as well but for me, on or above the knee looks the worst.

EvangelineTheNightStar · 08/03/2026 07:59

I like it!

OhDear111 · 08/03/2026 08:05

I was going to say it’s a bit short but nothing wrong with it. I think shorter women don’t suit midi but a few inches longer is just more elegant.

JMSA · 08/03/2026 08:10

I mean, it’s ok. Not wow but perfectly fine.
It looks a bit too big for you on top, but not sure if that’s just the style of it.

Stickytoffeetartt · 08/03/2026 08:11

No sorry , it's had its day. Anything over 10 years old I chuck.

Wow. I’m glad you’re not seeing that judgmental twat any more.
