Is this dress dated?

I bought it in 2015, Star by Julian McDonald. It’s floaty fabric with light texture, kimono style. I loved it at the time but can work out if I am just nostalgic about it and it’s quite dated, or is it one of those style that has never been in / out of trend and therefore is as current as it ever was?

Is this dress dated?
OP posts:
Growlybear83 · 07/03/2026 18:31

I think it looks a fairly timeless dress. If you love it, why does it matter what anyone else thinks?

Thelankyone · 07/03/2026 18:28

Sigh, look I’m not up for a pile on, if you feel I think it is shame in not wanting to look a couple of decades older than I am, and you like to look significantly older than you are, then colour me covered in shame and crack on, fill your boots. I will take the accusation. 😂

It was you who said OP shouldn’t wear as it’s ageing, not me

would you say the same to a man?

theres the difference…

agree let’s not derail the thread

Jellytotsapplepie · 07/03/2026 18:12

Yes i think kittem heels would make it dated amd too formal

flat pumps for sure

It's an OK dress. If I owned it I might wear it to work with a cropped, boxy cardigan over it. I don't like the sleeves. I wouldn't wear it to go out anywhere socially.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 07/03/2026 18:34

I think it looks lovely on you, but silver shoes are wrong with that colour.

Yes I would. And I know this is mumsnet and peiple attack you over the slightest thing, but wow. This is something else. Attacked because you say something is ageing. Unbelievable. You want to look much older than your years crack on. I don’t. If that makes me some sort of elderly shaming shrew, so be it. I’m in my fifties and don’t want to look like I’m in my 70s. What a crime.

AllSlippersareBanned · 07/03/2026 18:37

I’m not sure it was ever fashionable. The shape reminds me of a hospital gown. I’d not keep it.

Aluna · 07/03/2026 18:37

I wouldn’t say it’ a dated but it is too big and rather dowdy. I’ve no doubt you could find something fresher and more flattering.

Shmoigel · 07/03/2026 18:42

I love the colour but it’s a little dated. Im
the same, I have some lovely dresses that i am fond of and it’s hard to let go.

I always put it in a 90s perspective as that’s when I was a teen. Would 1990 you wear something from 1979?

Overtheatlantic · 07/03/2026 18:43

Thelankyone · 07/03/2026 18:15

Huh? I’m older, no one said there was any shame in it, but most women don’t wish to look beyond their years and there is nothing more ageing than wearing dated clothes; I’m older, so I’m clearly not going to day it’s shameful, nor did I.

I didn’t use the word shameful, but you did. Your remarks were meant to be cutting, and then you followed up with your comment about not wearing it on holiday. You know nothing about the OP, fashion, or her holidays, and yet you are making belittling comments. Why?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/03/2026 18:45

I think the length makes it look dated.

KindleSchmindle · 07/03/2026 18:46

Thelankyone · 07/03/2026 17:43

I do think wearing stuff like that is quite ageing though, it makes me think you’re an older woman just by your dress. And likely older than you are. I’d also assume it’s something you have had a very long time in your wardrobe, I’d not think it was new,

I’m genuinely trying to work out your thought process. If someone is wearing clothing from a particular era, it makes them look old if the era is further back?

How come my DC are all wearing my 90s onwards clothes then? Ones just gone out wearing a short black fake fur jacket, no one is going to think she’s in her 40s or 50s!

im not being bitchy I don’t understand.

anyway, fashion may come and go but style is forever. If you feel happy in it and that it suits you, wear it! I would get rid of the belt loops tho as wouldn’t they show even with tie belt? I dont like visible loops and it has an obvious waistband where the belt would sit anyway. It would look nice with gold accessories esp if you’re brunette.

Ipollita · 07/03/2026 18:47

It is, yes and I don’t think any shoes or accessories will make it less so! I’m afraid I disagree with the ballet flats suggestion as this would make it look even more dated - sort of elder millennial who’s never moved on from the 2010s. It also looks a little big on you.

Laiste · 07/03/2026 18:48

I think it looks like a polyester dressing gown. I'm so sorry.

It looks ok in the pic because you have a nice figure and it's in a nice clean bright room. I think you could do a lot better though OP.

Peripain · 07/03/2026 18:49

I like it. It is classic. The only issue is accessorizing against the colour, to keep it current.

KindleSchmindle · 07/03/2026 18:49

Floisme · 07/03/2026 17:47

I wore a 1960s A line, on-the-knee skirt yesterday and it felt surprisingly modern so maybe we’re fashion soothsayers op. I like your dress.

See to me, this is always a classic (esp tweed ans lined Grin) and stylish rather than fashionable. I love A line skirts as they suit me and have worn them all my life whatever decade.

Greenwriter76 · 07/03/2026 18:49

I like it - timeless, elegant and versatile shape and colour.

Itsonlymeee · 07/03/2026 18:51

Imagine your hypothetical sister comes round and wants the dress. Would it bother you if she takes it without intending to return it?

Placestogo · 07/03/2026 18:52

I love it! It suits you well

I think it's a bit silly to keep insisting that a dress can make someone look 20 years older. I'm sure you don't think that really.

I'd say the reason you're getting pushback is because your posts appear to be conflating looking older with looking out of date. (To be fair, you're not the only one and people do it all the time on this board.) If that isn't what you meant then all you have to do is cut the dramatics and say so.

Anyways I still like the dress. I'm a bit surprised I do because it's not normally my thing but I think it looks kind of fresh.

Edited for typos

PolkaDotPorridge · 07/03/2026 18:53

Not dated and if you like it and feel good wearing it, who cares.

KindleSchmindle · 07/03/2026 18:53

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 07/03/2026 18:30

Looks like a hospital gown

What sort of hospitals do you attend?!

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 07/03/2026 18:54

I think it's timeless ,keep.

GloiredeDijon · 07/03/2026 18:54

Does it matter if you like it?

I think it looks lovely but the only opinion which matters is yours.

I really can’t understand why anyone worries about being “on trend” or whatever once they are past late teens.

Surely the freedom and maturity to choose what you like is a good thing rather than feeling under pressure to be a copycat?

Depends on the clothes. If I still owned and could still fit into some of the Laura Ashley stuff I had from the late 1970s and early 1980s absolutely yes. And I still wear a Laura Ashley coat which dates from 1989. Although I suppose they're more rummaging in the dressing up box than this dress.

LucyLoo1972 · 07/03/2026 18:55

its really lovely and suits you but I dont really care about what's in fashion
