Is this too casual for a wedding?

Jillwiththefrill · 25/02/2026 09:46

Attending a spring wedding and trying to get sorted rather than leaving too late like I usually do.

Me - 40, Mum of 2 under 5 (who will be present and DH is best man so I need to be wearing something I can "run around" in while he's on duty, size 12/14, 5"2, wide at the hips, small waste, ugly legs.

The wedding venue is a big garden space (with inside area) so it's basically flowers and greenery everywhere.

Would this dress be suitable, or is it too plain? I could possibly wear this on other occasions and the price tag is just right.

Everything I'm finding that I like is over £100, which just isn't in my budget unfortunately, not for something I'll get little wear out of.

I'd welcome other suggestions if there's something else you think would be better.

(please don't suggest Vinted. I've given up trying to buy anything other than kids stuff on Vinted due to the wardrobe full of clothing that doesn't fit and now needs to be re-sold).

As you liked another Love & Roses dress, OP, what about this one?

https://www.next.co.uk/style/su894624/y26975

the print placement on this is really odd - unless you're OK with a bright pink circle highlighting your crotch.

Dragonrock · 26/02/2026 11:32

I'm about your height/size and wonder if you have considered a jumpsuit? Small waist would look lovely and also covers the legs (if you are not so keen on them). I have worn jumpsuits to the last two weddings I have attended and been stylish and comfy all day. Also more practical are chasing little ones? Karen Millen has a few nice green ones

That’s really unfortunate and can’t unsee it now. 😄

Bland, something younwould go to the shops in…

Yes. I’d go out for a drink/lunch with friends wearing that dress. It’s just a summer dress imo. But each to their own.

@Verite1 , if I wanted to read about small wastes I'd be looking in Property and DIY.

Stop being such an absolute div. Whether a typo, or someone who has dyslexia not picking up the incorrect spelling of the waist/waste homophone, it’s disrespectful and unnecessary to behave how you have you on this thread.

I don't really like it and it's viscose, but would be OK for a fairly informal wedding. You could probably get something better.

Models's height is 5'10" - she wears a UK size 8. Wearing length is: 130cm

Hate to be that person, but it's waist not waste.
(My waistline does have some waste Smile)

Unfortunately @NamingNoNames , you ARE that person - there really was no need to correct the OP's spelling. 🙄

SheSpeaks · 26/02/2026 13:41

It is lovely OP and I’d quite happily wear it to some of the weddings I’ve been to. It is really odd to me that anyone can dismiss any outfit as not suitable for a wedding. Unless you think of weddings as one homogenous mass and there is only one correct way to do things, in which case, how boring. It’s surely a bit like saying is this outfit suitable for a “birthday party” or a “day out” - I mean who knows, way too many variables. Same with weddings, surely. Any other way is boring, at best, pretty stifling and disrespectful of your guests at worst.

Admittedly I do tend to just pick something from my wardrobe each morning including when I’m invited to a wedding. But I’ve been to weddings in jeans and a t shirt, polka dots, fancy dress (as in costume not a fancy dress), white, cream, heels, trainers, dresses - whatever the specific occasion called for.

i like the dress OP.

MrsMitford3 · 26/02/2026 13:45

@Jillwiththefrill

Maybe a bit more information about the wedding because it will help ppl with their advice-is it daytime/formal/what is your DH wearing?
Outside garden in the afternoon or evening event?

dubbie · 26/02/2026 13:55

I think it's lovely OP and just right for the type of wedding.

It is a bit, isn't it? Though I think your crotch placement is a bit on the droopy side ... 😁!!

Not my own preference from the ones I've posted as I suspect it might look rather cheap close up. Polyester again - though at least it's 100% recycled. Ditto with the floral one from Next. The others I posted are all more expensive/higher-quality brands that are brilliantly reduced, so are more likely to look good in the flesh (subject to fit).

I think it’s lovely ,and much prefer the green version.
Easy to scale it up for the wedding with jewellery etc but also you’ll get a lot of wear out of it in the summer (when it finally arrives).
Wedding venue sounds quite relaxed , and if you’re wrangling two under 5’s you don’t want to be trussed up in a more formal outfit.
Hope you have a great time.

Agree with this. You wanna get more wear from it than a day.

Have a good time.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 27/02/2026 00:27

It's a nice dress for a picnic or a day at the beach. Not a wedding.

CRCGran · 27/02/2026 03:57

I think the dress is lovely and perfectly fine for a wedding guest, but... I too am 5'2" and a 12/14.... and the waist on the dress would be all in the wrong place.... Have you tried Roman Originals petite range? They really have some beautiful dresses well within your budget.. and would fit and flatter your figure. They have an "occasion" section. And the petite sizing is excellent. Have a look.

Jillwiththefrill · 25/02/2026 10:38

Thank you, there's been a few points highlighted which I hadn't considered so that is helpful.

I haven't tried it on (live back of beyond so everything has to be ordered in). It might look terrible on my frame, but if the consensus is it would ok for a the wedding then I'll try it as a starting point. I could always have the length taken up if it's a bit too long on me.

Unfortunately pink is absolutely not my colour, green on the other hand is. Again, hadn't occurred that I might blend into the scenery - might come in useful when I want to hide from my children 😂

Why do NC put such ugly/odd footwear with their dresses. What are those things! I'll aim for something a little less slipper like.

I much prefer the green OP.

I normally like pink but something about that one reminds me of when I threw up red jelly and strawberry ice cream after a childhood birthday party: it looks awful.

I think with nice accessories it works for the occasion you have described.

leilajay · 27/02/2026 08:28

Looks beautiful and lovely colours. What's important is that you love it.

CatsAreBetterThanMen · 28/02/2026 00:01

For what it's worth, I think it's lovely and the green is definitely the best colour. I think it would be perfectly appropriate for a garden wedding dressed up with a couple of lovely hair grips in a flattering do and a good pair of shoes. It's a good price and you could definitely get a lot of wear out of it as it can be dressed up or down and so would be value for money.

Ramblingaway · 28/02/2026 01:20

As you are only 5'2, you might want to look at petite options, otherwise the waist of standard sizes can find up on your hips (at least, it does on me). Prettiest Patchwork Print Dress | Womenswear | Joe Browns https://share.google/j9gz5KN0vbslCNcME
