Is this too casual for a wedding?

Jillwiththefrill · 25/02/2026 09:46

Attending a spring wedding and trying to get sorted rather than leaving too late like I usually do.

Me - 40, Mum of 2 under 5 (who will be present and DH is best man so I need to be wearing something I can "run around" in while he's on duty, size 12/14, 5"2, wide at the hips, small waste, ugly legs.

The wedding venue is a big garden space (with inside area) so it's basically flowers and greenery everywhere.

Would this dress be suitable, or is it too plain? I could possibly wear this on other occasions and the price tag is just right.

Everything I'm finding that I like is over £100, which just isn't in my budget unfortunately, not for something I'll get little wear out of.

I'd welcome other suggestions if there's something else you think would be better.

(please don't suggest Vinted. I've given up trying to buy anything other than kids stuff on Vinted due to the wardrobe full of clothing that doesn't fit and now needs to be re-sold).

I think it's pretty. Definitely worth trying to see whether it suits. I agree with the gold shoe suggestion, but will add in to have some pretty trainers in a bag. At the last few weddings I've been to most people have been dancing in trainers by the end of the evening

NamingNoNames · 25/02/2026 12:19

@PhaedraWas , I can't stand viscose.

@Jillwiththefrill , who made you thread prefect?

Verite1 · 25/02/2026 12:28

You were being mean and got called out on it. As OP said, if you hate to be that person, then don’t be!

OP - I like the dress. I think it’s simple and pretty. I also don’t have an issue with viscose - I think it can fall/drape really nicely.

NamingNoNames · 25/02/2026 12:31

@Verite1 , if I wanted to read about small wastes I'd be looking in Property and DIY.

So what? Viscose, particularly the Tencel brand can be a lovely, silky fabric which drapes well.

I can't stand leather or pleather clothes or sequins or lurex so I don't buy them. I don't tell others not too

Ruthietuthie · 25/02/2026 12:36

I think it is absolutely beautiful and am tempted to order it myself. As someone with a similar build, it would suit my shape, so I imagine it would suit you too. And I like the green.

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 25/02/2026 12:36

Alternatively, if and when you feel able to spend more on a dress that might work for all sorts of mildly dressy events - you could keep an eye on:

https://www.pinkcityprints.com/collections/all-dresses

Or, possibly:

https://daydress.co.uk/

They’re both easy, ‘running after children’ type brands - obviously more expensive but with rather more to them than Nobody's Child. (And very good value in the sales.)

I didn't tell her not to buy it or not to buy it because it was viscose.

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 25/02/2026 12:39

No idea why a Nobody’s Child photo has come up on my post. I haven’t linked them!

PhaedraWas · 25/02/2026 12:44

NamingNoNames · 25/02/2026 12:38

I didn't tell her not to buy it or not to buy it because it was viscose.

Why bother pointing out it's viscose if you weren't trying to put OP off? And why follow up with your irrelevant comment about not liking viscose?

Your not at all funny comment about "small wastes" looks horribly ungrammatical. When would one refer to "small wastes"? In the DIY context it would be low or possibly small "wastage" .

Sidebeforeself · 25/02/2026 12:59

@Londonmummy66 That first dress is beautiful!

Lilylolamillie · 25/02/2026 13:00

May be worth looking on Next and filtering under petite dresses.
Something like this one maybe

I think its a nice dress and if it fits would be perfectly suitable. If you wanted something more floral then this is reduced https://www.johnlewis.com/anaya-with-love-floral-ruffle-midaxi-dress-green-yellow-floral/p113585923?size=14

The back of this one is stunning but it is a bit over budget https://www.nobodyschild.com/products/zola-midi-dress-ss-2615354002

They’re both nice and a bit more dressy than the first one. But the first one could always be dressed up.

poetryandwine · 25/02/2026 13:02

I like it and agree with PP that gold sandals would make a big difference.

I also like @Starlight1979 ’s choices and, if you really don’t care about wearing the dress more than once the rental option from PP is lovely and may work.

What about a wrap? A knit cardi will be tricky because of the puff in the sleeves and the bow in the back. A blazer is the wrong vibe. A shawl, pashmina or scarf large enough to keep the chill off would work, or possibly a jacket of the right shape, just to the waist. A bolero jacket with loose back and shoulders, cropped at the waist, might work? I can’t quite decide.

If you have already have a wrap or jacket that works with one of the choices that is a good head start.

Benjithedog · 25/02/2026 13:03

It’s a bit plain for a wedding . Have a look on Monsoon’s sale page they generally have quite a few wedding guest dresses

unsevered67 · 25/02/2026 13:08

I’ve seen that dress irl and I think it’s very pretty. Would look great with gold accessories. And you could easily dress it down and wear later in the summer.
I like it better than any of the other options that have been suggested .

NamingNoNames · 25/02/2026 12:19

@PhaedraWas , I can't stand viscose.

@Jillwiththefrill , who made you thread prefect?

@NamingNoNames Nobody, because this isn't school.

I've looked at all the other suggestions and really like the look of a few of them, despite the being quite far out of my normal very basic comfort zone. But you don't know until you try. I think I might order the Anaya dress from John Lewis @Londonmummy66 suggested, and the Love & Roses one on Next is gorgeous @Lilylolamillie . I have to admit I'd normally scroll by something with that much pattern, but I'm feeling quite good about myself for the first time in a while so perhaps it's time I move away from the clothes that I know I'll just blend in.

I'll also take a look at the dress hire options, which hadn't even crossed my mind.

Loving all the suggestions and appreciate the constructive feedback. 😀

Edit to add, in answer to the poster who asked why I might never wear it again, honestly I just don't go many places where I'd have a reason to wear a pretty dress and really I just feel a bit stupid dressing up for some reason, but if I can find something that doesn't feel too OTT then I'll try and find more reasons to wear it. DH is never one to turn down the offer a date night.

If you happen to feel like exploring other options … I filtered on Hurr (rental) for size 14, green dress - lots came up but this is a bit wow:

https://www.hurrcollective.com/listings/gloriana-silk-dress-83857

Edited

clearly a matter of personal taste but I much prefer the one the OP posted and did you miss the bit about needing to run round after kids on her ugly legs?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/02/2026 13:22

It’s pretty enough, but I do think it’s too casual/ordinary, especially if your OH is best man, unless you’re going to dress it up with a jacket ( I think a shawl would be awful). By the time you’ve had to buy a jacket as well, it might just be easier to spend a bit more on the dress.

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 25/02/2026 13:27

@MiddleAgedDread must you be so literal? It is a whole website full of clothes. And there are many other rental sites too. What the hell does it matter if the OP doesn’t like the single dress I happened to link? Do you not credit her with the brains to investigate all the options for herself?

Sidebeforeself · 25/02/2026 13:32

You say you are feeling good about yourself at the moment. That’s great ! So treat yourself to something a bit more exciting than the one you chose and enjoy feeling great all day ( even if you are running around! )
