Is this too casual for a wedding?

Jillwiththefrill · 25/02/2026 09:46

Attending a spring wedding and trying to get sorted rather than leaving too late like I usually do.

Me - 40, Mum of 2 under 5 (who will be present and DH is best man so I need to be wearing something I can "run around" in while he's on duty, size 12/14, 5"2, wide at the hips, small waste, ugly legs.

The wedding venue is a big garden space (with inside area) so it's basically flowers and greenery everywhere.

Would this dress be suitable, or is it too plain? I could possibly wear this on other occasions and the price tag is just right.

Everything I'm finding that I like is over £100, which just isn't in my budget unfortunately, not for something I'll get little wear out of.

I'd welcome other suggestions if there's something else you think would be better.

(please don't suggest Vinted. I've given up trying to buy anything other than kids stuff on Vinted due to the wardrobe full of clothing that doesn't fit and now needs to be re-sold).

I disagree and think a blazer could work with it if needed. Certainly more than a bolero jacket or pashmina which instantly makes the whole outfit uglier.

Sorry but I really hate shawls and bolero jackets/cardigans and would happily see them outlawed. 😄

Differences make the world go round.

IMO it’s all in how you wear them (boleros or pashminas). Certainly a pashmina needs good posture.

I like blazers in their place very much but pairing a blazer with a short sleeved, flowy dress with an empire waist and getting it right is a tricky thing to pull off. On a shorter woman, my inner eye keeps seeing it paired with DMs because I fear that’s the vibe the combination suggests.

Alternatively, if and when you feel able to spend more on a dress that might work for all sorts of mildly dressy events - you could keep an eye on:

https://www.pinkcityprints.com/collections/all-dresses

Or, possibly:

https://daydress.co.uk/

They’re both easy, ‘running after children’ type brands - obviously more expensive but with rather more to them than Nobody's Child. (And very good value in the sales.)

Edited

These are all a bit, ‘when you’re milking the cows at 5pm and doing the flamenco at 6pm’. Love the two darker Nobody’s child dresses, especially the black flowery one - the neckline is lovely. Your green one is good - depends on your colouring - but needs jazzed up with gold or even pink.

Some posters are obsessed by blazers. I suppose if they are using it as a synonym for jacket then some jackets can go well with dresses. But if they mean the sort of Holland Cooper type blazer, definitely not with this dress.

Lovely! Nice fascinator, jacket and shoes and it's job done.

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 25/02/2026 18:21

It’s perfect!

Apparently fascinators are a thing of the past, according to some Mumsnetters, but I think some can complete an outfit.

You see, to me that sounds verging on horrid. I also don’t like the sight of a traditional blazer, or a little Chanel-esque jacket over a dress. It’s all so painfully dated.

(Sorry!)

This is a bit of a crosspatch thread for what seems like a lovely subject - pretty dresses for a spring wedding on the first sunny day of the year.

I like the one you posted OP and I like the Next Love & Roses one too if you want to be a bit bolder.

ThatWhiteElephant · 25/02/2026 19:49

It’s lovely and I much prefer the green version.

Shessweetbutapsycho · 25/02/2026 20:00

Starlight1979 · 25/02/2026 10:50

These two are much better options IMO. The dress in the OP is very casual- it looks like something I’d sling on to do the school run in the summer!

Neveranynamesleft · 25/02/2026 20:05

Not rtwt but i think its lovely for a wedding... but do not wear a blazer, would look odd and make it look old fashioned. Some modern chunky silver jewellery and strappy sandals would look fab.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 25/02/2026 20:17

I think it’s perfect for what you want. I also like the plain green nobody’s child dress.

Gosh there are some very observant people on here re bra straps/humps under blazers etc!!

I think it's a perfectly nice* dress OP - not exactly striking, but it ticks your boxes re budget + ease of wear + colour that suits + covers your legs. Plus you can wear it again, dressed down for a lunch out or something. And with metallic footwear (my go-to to make something dressier) & accessories, maybe even bag (or clashing, depending on what you're wearing over it?), it will look pretty.

I too was going to ask if you'd tried it on yet - as it's not exactly the shape I would look at first for someone short & pear-shaped. So, if you order it & it doesn't suit ...

... you said you liked & suited green? Here are a couple of things I posted recently that I think are good if you're short, have a small waist & fuller hips. I actually really dislike about 95% of Karen Millen stuff - but thought this (in a linen-blend organdie of all things for KM), was a bit of a gem for someone who likes & suits this sort of shape. £135 but has an extra 20% off so just about on budget?!!!

It's not in petite but KM's fit is on the shorter side anyway, so hopefully the waist would sit at the right point on you. It's also - bizarrely - described as a maxi dress??!!! The model is 5' 9", & it's over-the-knee/barely midi on her at 125cm long, so would be a midaxi (horrid but useful word) on you.

The slightly see-through organdie makes it dressier than just any old shirtwaister & is lined too (polyester, but hey ...) so is perfect for spring. And hopefully would be wearable for you again, rather than it having to join the Vinted re-sale pile ...??!!

Another one I've previously posted (& think is a great find from Monsoon, a label that's rather hit & miss, which looks more expensive than it actually is - in photos at least!). In a 12 or 14, though reduced more at Debenhams to £39.50.

The top/jacket (it's worn as both in the photos) is out of stock everywhere right now (except eBay/Vinted in a L/16-18 for the set). But if you liked it, I would save a notification reminder for any re-stocks on Monsoon/JL/Dorothy Perkins etc, as well as eBay/Vinted (yes, I know you said no Vinted - but if it's a no it's an instant & profitable re-sale!!).

They are nice.

Ohyeahitsme · 25/02/2026 21:42

It's lovely and would be perfect for the type of weddings I attend, where as the dress TheApocalypticiansApprentice linked to would be considered too dressy for a wedding (as opposed to to smart) so I think it depends on type of people the wedding is for!

@Sidebeforeself You, sadly, have no idea about fashion. Check out Gucci, Prada and Dior. I assume you have heard of them? This is meant to be a style board!

Jillwiththefrill · 25/02/2026 10:38

Thank you, there's been a few points highlighted which I hadn't considered so that is helpful.

I haven't tried it on (live back of beyond so everything has to be ordered in). It might look terrible on my frame, but if the consensus is it would ok for a the wedding then I'll try it as a starting point. I could always have the length taken up if it's a bit too long on me.

Unfortunately pink is absolutely not my colour, green on the other hand is. Again, hadn't occurred that I might blend into the scenery - might come in useful when I want to hide from my children 😂

Why do NC put such ugly/odd footwear with their dresses. What are those things! I'll aim for something a little less slipper like.

Maybe they're "model's own" - that might explain things! I don't hate them, but I do wonder what they're doing with that dress!

I think this dress is absolutely gorgeous! Could you also wear an appropriate hat or “flatterer” if that’s what they’re called?

EleanorMc67 · 25/02/2026 22:25

Jillwiththefrill · 25/02/2026 13:10

@NamingNoNames Nobody, because this isn't school.

I've looked at all the other suggestions and really like the look of a few of them, despite the being quite far out of my normal very basic comfort zone. But you don't know until you try. I think I might order the Anaya dress from John Lewis @Londonmummy66 suggested, and the Love & Roses one on Next is gorgeous @Lilylolamillie . I have to admit I'd normally scroll by something with that much pattern, but I'm feeling quite good about myself for the first time in a while so perhaps it's time I move away from the clothes that I know I'll just blend in.

I'll also take a look at the dress hire options, which hadn't even crossed my mind.

Loving all the suggestions and appreciate the constructive feedback. 😀

Edit to add, in answer to the poster who asked why I might never wear it again, honestly I just don't go many places where I'd have a reason to wear a pretty dress and really I just feel a bit stupid dressing up for some reason, but if I can find something that doesn't feel too OTT then I'll try and find more reasons to wear it. DH is never one to turn down the offer a date night.

Edited

I think that the ruffles on the Anaya dress are better if you're a bit pear-shaped than your original choice, OP - even though it's a similar shape its more balancing. And the second one is a fairly universally flattering shape & very pretty.

Have you looked at Whistles petite sale? Their dresses are normally over £100 but this has just gone into the sale, is cut for petite women, & I think is really versatile to dress up for wedding or down for afterwards?

It’s fine. Non offensive but a little informal and nothing special. I’d probably wear this sightseeing with flats or trainers on a city break.

Oh, I do dislike those close up! They look as if they're made from that expanding packing cardboard ...
