pinkyponkyplink · 07/02/2026 05:29

im late 40/ and have a mums night out. I’m feeling overwhelmed with what to wear and what’s in. I’d like jeans and a nice top ideas. I’m a 12/14 and feeling conscious of my tummy so would like something with shape and a v neck or plunge if possible. I’ve no idea about what jeans are in either so please send me suggestions or links

Start with your shoes, what sort will you be wearing? Boots, loafers, heels, trainers, ballet flats, clogs?

Surely you decide the outfit then the shoes not vice Versa.

op, in terms of jeans, generally dark indigo or black for a night out. Shape is what works for you but skinny is dates so I’d avoid.

i tend to wear a lot of shell tops, so round neck sleeveless and then I’d go a pair of wide leg dark indigo jeans, I know you want v neck or plunge, but thay can look very dated now.

so for me

it would be something like these tops

if v neck is not negotiable, a nice shirt can have the same effect.

and these jeans

as for shoes, what are you comfortable in? Anything from a pair of low heeled boots to nice trainers can work,

The OP had few clues to what she liked, so I thought if she tells us what shoes she has it would be a starting point. I personally do start with my shoes, I like to match my shoes to what I’m doing, I’ve got shoes that I’d wear to sit a lot in, then there’s shoes I’d dance in, then there’s shoes I’d wear if we were going from bar to bar etc? Also, I think the barrel leg jeans do require a shoe rethink. I also think about the weather sadly, this constant rain means you have to think about outer wear too.
Style & Beauty has changed so much, no wonder people don’t post as the second response criticises the first 🙄

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/02/2026 08:52

Barrel or wide leg jeans are trendy now. Re tops it depends if you think a boring sort of top like the kind you get in Next would be ok or do you want more trendy?

Personally I’d look somewhere like All Saints for a tshirt top or even a band tshirt. There are lots of nice tops on the Next website though!

Holdinguphalfthesky · 07/02/2026 09:04

Fair point regarding the weather. That would also factor in to my trousers- the slightly narrower ankle of barrel trousers is better in wet weather than wide legs.

My current favourite jeans are Levi’s Baggy Dad Barrel jeans and my lust-after are the Remi jeans from Beyond Nine (I have some of their Mabel trousers which are amazing).

I think a top needs to play to your confidence- and a good bra can make a massive difference to how any top looks. So maybe John Lewis for a proper bra fitting and get something that makes your boobs look great, then your waist will follow suit and your posture, and then you will look fabulous in a sack if you have to 😁

Notsosweetcaroline · 07/02/2026 09:08

I also agree on the underwear, it’s so important. I never used to understand that until I lost weight and got way more interested in clothes. Now I have a variety of bras that work under different tops and rhe same for knickers,

the two key things for any outfit is to feel fabulous and be very comfortable

personally I really dislike barrel jeans and not sure the op said she liked them either, but I understand they are popular.

weather is key for footwear if spending time outside, but if really just getting in and out of a car, less relevant than ghe season.

pinkyponkyplink · 07/02/2026 09:21

I love the Reiss jeans but can’t afford that price. Where else for wide leg indigo jeans? I worry about my arms so would prefer a short sleeve. I’d either wear heels or boots depending on weather

Have a look on Vinted if you know the size you need. I sometimes try things on in a shop (like the Levi’s) and then wait till they come up on Vinted/ eBay.

£40 absolute bargain and they’re so flattering!

What body shape are you and bra size and I can advise on a top to wear with - oh and where are you going?

BitOutOfPractice · 07/02/2026 09:40

I think a mum’s night out will be fairly casual. Where is it? A pub? A swanky bar? The theatre? That would be my starting point, outfit wise.

Pull and Bear have some really nice ones. I have a few pairs from there.

Furlane · 07/02/2026 10:23

What’s the venue? Are you going to the local pub, sushi in Shoreditch, cocktails in Crewe, Wetherspoons in Winchester, will there be dancing, etc.?

MetaDaughter · 07/02/2026 10:30

Have a look at the styling here for ‘jeans and a nice top’. (Obviously there are more and fancier tops on the rest of the site.)

https://www.stories.com/en-gb/clothing/jeans/

Blarn · 07/02/2026 10:35

Where are you going? Restaurant, busy bar, local pub?

growinguptobreakingdown · 07/02/2026 10:43

If it's a school mum's night out I assume a local pub?It also sounds like you are on a budget
.M&S indigo wide legged jeans or the ones linked by others above.
H&M (really cute cardigans with nice details at the moment) , or M&S for a shirt tucked in with belt.Big gold hoops (Other stories ones don't tarnish), paint your nails.
Trainers - I love the silver Adidas campus at the moment but you can get dupes if too expensive. New Balance go with everything too.Or a mid heeled boot but that's not what I would choose.
If you have an oversized black blazer it pulls everything together. I have a leopard print long sleeve jersey top from Rixo (£45 in the sale) which also works with this outfit.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/02/2026 10:52

I think that starting with what shoes you have is a good call.

Marks for jeans - set aside a couple of hours to try on loads of pairs.

Also agree with people who said we need to know more about the venue. Also about where you like to shop. It’s no good people recommending Me & Em if your budget is Sainsbury’s, for example.

Good v neck tops are virtually impossible to find which is a pita.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/02/2026 11:07

Have a look at Nobody’s Child maybe. They do plunging necklines; might need to size up if you’re busty.

Or maybe think about a dress- if you can find a nice one, it’s easier than finding jeans and a top. This would definitely depend on your venue though.

Why does the OP need to wear what's trendy right now ??

Furlane · 07/02/2026 11:18

ihavetotallyhadenough · 07/02/2026 11:09

Why does the OP need to wear what's trendy right now ??

She doesn’t ‘need’ to, but she wants to and that’s what she’s asked for.

IfyouStealMySunshine · 07/02/2026 11:20

Because she’s asked about what’s in twice on her OP@ihavetotallyhadenoughso that alludes to the fact she’d like to wear something that’s trendy rather than dated ?

owlpassport · 07/02/2026 11:22

These jeans are excellent, but can be hard to get in your size because they're so good. These are similar and available in a 14.

River Island are also good for jeans, e.g. relaxed flares, maybe a shape you're more comfortable with.

I think a shirt on top is a good idea. Dressy but not try-hard, you could go for a nice satin fabric to look dressier. Wear unbuttoned for the v neck. For example - https://www.marksandspencer.com/satin-collared-shirt/p/clp60648552?intid=mobileapppdpshare

I'd avoid trainers, yes they're popular but if you're not confident/inherently stylish it can be tricky to get right. Some pointed-toe boots would be good. Just make sure they're long enough to go under your jeans without them riding up and showing any ankle when you walk or sit down.

Oh and roll your sleeves up a bit on the shirt, and wear nice jewellery (earrings and a bracelet, for example. They can be chunky but don't go overboard with accessories).

Notsosweetcaroline · 07/02/2026 11:30

ihavetotallyhadenough · 07/02/2026 11:09

Why does the OP need to wear what's trendy right now ??

she Doesn’t need to, but she indicated she wanted current rather than dated.

and agree in budget, for the idea I linked I understand they are higher end high st but it was more for general ideas op, as they can be replicated much cheaper elsewhere, ie the jeans linked.

for tops what sort of colour do you like? If you’re self conscious of your tummy then going streamlined can help, ie all navy if wearing navy jeans. Or a looser top can help ie a silk or chiffon shirt.

v necks and plunge neck are a bit dated now, clothes are much more streamlined and round necks more current, but many still available and plenty of people still wear them and suit them.

if you’ve a couple of weeks vinted is a treasure trove.

for example

https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/8046116601-me-em-black-sheer-top?referrer=catalog

But you can’t send them back as you don’t like or don’t fit, you’d need to resell.
