im late 40/ and have a mums night out. I’m feeling overwhelmed with what to wear and what’s in. I’d like jeans and a nice top ideas. I’m a 12/14 and feeling conscious of my tummy so would like something with shape and a v neck or plunge if possible. I’ve no idea about what jeans are in either so please send me suggestions or links

What jeans are you thinking to replace the wide and barrels @Worldgonecrazy? I have noticed stillettos making a comeback, together with sort of pedal pushers - Zara have a black lace pair

Onehundreddays not sure where you are, but I was out this evening in central London and there were masses of women in heels. Stilettos, block heels, kitten heels, boots, all sorts. Some women fresh from the 90s in stilettos with miniskirts and boob tubes (and blue legs).

she Doesn’t need to, but she indicated she wanted current rather than dated.

and agree in budget, for the idea I linked I understand they are higher end high st but it was more for general ideas op, as they can be replicated much cheaper elsewhere, ie the jeans linked.

for tops what sort of colour do you like? If you’re self conscious of your tummy then going streamlined can help, ie all navy if wearing navy jeans. Or a looser top can help ie a silk or chiffon shirt.

v necks and plunge neck are a bit dated now, clothes are much more streamlined and round necks more current, but many still available and plenty of people still wear them and suit them.

if you’ve a couple of weeks vinted is a treasure trove.

for example

https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/7539970381-reiss-jeans-30r12-excellent

https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/8115542196-reiss-jeans?referrer=catalog

https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/8046116601-me-em-black-sheer-top?referrer=catalog

But you can’t send them back as you don’t like or don’t fit, you’d need to resell.

If v-necks are dated then every woman with a large bust is destined never to look good r current because round necks are awful on a big bust and make the person look matronly.

A lot of people think that, but it’s the tummy, often a large busy is accompanied by a large stomach, and that’s the matronly look. A flat stomach and a large bust doesn’t look matronly in a round neck, far from it.

i know I’ve been there, it’s not th4 boobs it’s the belly and the op is just a size 12-14 and as much as she’s self conscious, she won’t have that matronly look.

pinkyponkyplink · 08/02/2026 08:47

This is all so helpful. Thanks.
im going to look at the wide leg jeans.
we are going to a posh pub. It’s more of a restaurant but will end up in the bar afterwards. I love pink. That’s my idea for a top, bit anything that’s quite girly is good for me. I’d like to have something fitted for the top especially if the jeans are wide leg. I know I’m a 12-14 but I have a bit of shape so would like to pull that in.
thanks so much for the suggestions so far

See the top above I posted. There are lots of pink tops if you google images a lot on sale. ASOS also have some but I’m not sure on their quality.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/02/2026 08:59

I’m guessing but not seen pink tops in Reiss, Ted Baker and so on if your budget stretches that far.

That pink MV top is vile imvho - and those lace pedal pushers are surely a joke?!

I think if you’re going for wide legged jeans, you then need to know which shoes and coat you’re wearing, and then decide on a top.

whattheysay · 08/02/2026 09:09

I personally think the previous poster is correct about the shoes, you may have the most lovely outfit but if you don’t have the right shoes or footwear for it then the outfit won’t look great. If you don’t have many different styles of footwear to suit different jeans styles/dresses/trousers etc then you have to look at the shoes you’ve got and plan your outfit around them. The wrong footwear can throw the outfit off.

whattheysay · 08/02/2026 09:22

If it was me and I was wearing wide leg jeans I would wear a smaller top but if you’re conscious of your stomach try different tops to see which one balances you more, if you’re thinking pink top I would go for light coloured pointed toe boots and a long coat past your knees. Either go cropped for the jeans and choose a slim ankle boot which goes up past the hem of the jeans or the jeans should be long enough to cover the boot but not touch the floor, don’t go for a random length where they’re flapping around on top of your shoe

Nobody's child is great if you are going for a "pretty" look e.g.

Do people in real life really wear blazers draped over their shoulders to be ‘current’? I thought that was just for idiots on Instagram who only need it to stay in place for 30 seconds whilst they sort their pout out for a photo?

For centuries people have worn things a certain way to look current. Shirts knotted, French tucks, sleeves rolled, blazers draped, scarves to add to an outfit rather than for practical reasons.

I drape my blazer when I’m too warm but too cold to remove it. It also hides upper arms if one is self conscious. It was also a trend in 70s which has re emerged.

Not sure why anyone would be considered to be ‘an idiot’ because of the way something is worn. Interesting perspective

LadyLapsang · 08/02/2026 10:44

What colour jeans? What size - 30/31/32? Do you usually wear a size 12 top? What is your budget?

I am currently struggling with my arm in a sling and having to drape coats because I can’t get them on properly. It’s a pain in the arse, they slide off constantly and I maintain that only an idiot would do this as a style choice. But you do you.

Most people, by the time they’ve reached their 40s, will probably have learned compromise and won’t just follow trends for the sake of it but want things to be relatively comfortable too, I reckon.

I have to agree with you. Unless someone slings a jacket over their shoulders as cold and sitting outside, I find wearing it as a fashion choice believing you look current a little silly, it’s highly impractical. I feel the same way about people who wear their fleeces hanging off one shoulder. Not jumpers designed to look that way, but when they are just hanging down. It’s just too try hard and doesn’t achieve the look they are hoping for.

Shockingly I don’t find it uncomfortable. I also find that they stay put just fine 😂

As always the level of judgement on here never fails to astound but as you said….you do you.

Or the instagram craze for using a red jumper as a scarf. Just buy a scarf!

So silly, so I will continue to judge!

Anyway, sorry for the sidetrack, OP. If you decide to wear a blazer draped over your shoulders, let us know. 😀

Twointhehand1 · 08/02/2026 15:03

I see ladies of all ages wearing jackets draped over their shoulders. I actually like it and think it’s looks chic and stylish and ‘intentional’. An old professor of mine always wore her jackets like this and remains to be the most intelligent and interesting woman I’ve ever met.

What I do find amazing is women branding other women as ‘idiots’ and speaking disparagingly of them, based on their fashion choices.

How does someone asking for help in choosing an outfit, descend into judgemental, snipes at other people’s clothing choices? Only on MN I suppose!

The only people I called idiots were people who pose on Instagram, probably wearing clothes that they’re being paid to wear. Anyway, drape away and I’ll leave you to it.

Hope you have a nice night out, OP.

Wide leg and barrel are starting to look dated. Stilettos are making a come back, as are v neck cardigans. Depends if you want to look current (wide leg or barrel) or ahead of the trend.

Wide leg trousers are a fashion classic imo, and will always be around.

Isometimeswonder · 08/02/2026 15:09

pinkyponkyplink · 07/02/2026 09:21

I love the Reiss jeans but can’t afford that price. Where else for wide leg indigo jeans? I worry about my arms so would prefer a short sleeve. I’d either wear heels or boots depending on weather

M&S do a variety of different leg shape jeans. They also do 4 lengths!
@pinkyponkyplink you will get a lot of recommendations for Cos, Me&Em etc, because it's style and beauty, but some high street ranges are good!
