pinkyponkyplink · 07/02/2026 05:29

im late 40/ and have a mums night out. I’m feeling overwhelmed with what to wear and what’s in. I’d like jeans and a nice top ideas. I’m a 12/14 and feeling conscious of my tummy so would like something with shape and a v neck or plunge if possible. I’ve no idea about what jeans are in either so please send me suggestions or links

I love the Reiss jeans but can’t afford that price. Where else for wide leg indigo jeans? I worry about my arms so would prefer a short sleeve. I’d either wear heels or boots depending on weather

Tu at Sainsbury’s is great for jeans if you’re on a budget! My favourite jeans are all from there. They fit really well and are lovely and soft.

Surely you decide the outfit then the shoes not vice Versa.

op, in terms of jeans, generally dark indigo or black for a night out. Shape is what works for you but skinny is dates so I’d avoid.

i tend to wear a lot of shell tops, so round neck sleeveless and then I’d go a pair of wide leg dark indigo jeans, I know you want v neck or plunge, but thay can look very dated now.

so for me

it would be something like these tops

https://www.meandem.com/merino-cashmere-barely-there-slim-knit-vest-black

if v neck is not negotiable, a nice shirt can have the same effect.

https://www.reiss.com/style/su699385/h71025

and these jeans

https://www.reiss.com/style/su441379/ad5000

as for shoes, what are you comfortable in? Anything from a pair of low heeled boots to nice trainers can work,

No, I absolutely always start with footwear. Knee boots would be a different outfit to flat loafers. Is she walking between bars? Does she want comfortable or will it be killer heels? All determine/impact the overall look

Barrel trousers. The Uniqlo ones are £35 and they look amazing, and comfortable. I’m an XL (16 bottoms). Wear it with trainers/pointy boots etc, but not chunky shoes, they are too much.
Top: a white shirt works with everything. A jumper/vest/cardigan that finish at your waist on top.
Big earrings and lipstick in a bolder shade you’d normally wear.

Agree with Vinted if you have time, you can really see the difference in quality in brands like Reiss and Hobbs vs Next or New Look - got a start most of their clothes are polyester which is just horrible. Though there is a risk of things not fitting/suiting of course and not being able to return. It takes a while to learn what brands tend to work for you.

So on Vinted I filter by brand and material as well as size and style.

But in terms of reasonably priced high street, I find M&S to be about the best quality and they do some surprisingly up to date styles. Their jeans are particularly good.

I'd go wide legged or flared jeans, try a few on and see what suits you. And then a tucked in blouse in a nice fabric, open a few top buttons but leave something to the imagination! And then statement earrings or necklace and a cute bag - of buying new, Accessorize is great for all of these on a budget.

And very few people wear heels these days.

ComeOnRef · 07/02/2026 13:43

I have some wide leg jeans from New Look which are great. River Island also do some wide leg trousers at the moment.

You haven’t said where you are going but if I was going to my local pub then I’d wear what I’d normally wear but with big hoop earrings and make up. Depends what you normally wear though I guess.

You really don’t need to wear heels, no one does. Unless you want to of course. I can’t remember the last time I wore heels.

That’s not true! I was out in Clapham the other weekend and lots of the younger crowd were wearing heels.

Agree with Tu Sainsbury’s jeans. They’re great value and comfy too. Not sure about the tops from there sadly.

I got some nice wide leg jeans from Mint Velvet - maybe go to John Lewis so you can gather lots of different makes and try them all on at the same time. I’m 5’6 and generally find that I’m way too short for Reiss and Mango trousers as they are made for people who are about 6’!

Newbie8918 · 07/02/2026 14:19

Wide leg jeans. River island.

heels (models own)

deep v bodysuit. Zara (sounds like you have nice breasticles and the material is usually nice and structured).

oversize blazer. Zara. Drape over your shoulder for a more current look

I think it depends on body type. I’m 5 foot 6.5 and both brands fit me perfectly, they are the best length on me, but I’ve long legs and a short body.

I must be 5’6” but with very short legs then 🤣🤣🤣. Ive had similar issues in Zara too.

I’ve the opposite and buy everything in long, ie markies jeans I need long.

If V-necks suit you more than round then go for it. You won't look dated, there are loads around at the moment e.g.

https://www.meandem.com/pouf-sleeve-v-neck-tee-soft-white

What colouring are you? The top I've linked there is white but that would be a bit harsh on me as I'm a soft summer so suit something more muted.

This thread is making me tempted to get some wide leg indigo jeans myself!

Do people in real life really wear blazers draped over their shoulders to be ‘current’? I thought that was just for idiots on Instagram who only need it to stay in place for 30 seconds whilst they sort their pout out for a photo?

minnowonthesay · 07/02/2026 18:24

Oh how funny @Notsosweetcaroline who’s zooming who do you think? 😂 those jeans are unbelievable, I’ve not seen them in store though - although they have a lovely pink jacket which is so like a River Island one…

I’ve noticed in a lot of shops. For example the ops dress is very similar to a me and em one, markies do a lot of menswear which is similar to reiss men’s,

Sorry was thinking of the other thread in style and beauty where the op asks to style a dress like this!

Worldgonecrazy · 07/02/2026 21:53

Wide leg and barrel are starting to look dated. Stilettos are making a come back, as are v neck cardigans. Depends if you want to look current (wide leg or barrel) or ahead of the trend.

minnowonthesay · 07/02/2026 23:06

seeing that Roman top reminded me that I have this one which is a lovely going out top, the green is also beautiful. It has ruched cuffs, button front, it looks more expensive than it was
