Do women carry handbags anymore?

Just this. I’ve just bought a small padded sweaty betty crossover bag because in recent months I just take my phone everywhere not even a wallet and use my pockets for this. Wallet etc is all on my phone. But ive recently wanted to take my kindle out with me and it’s a tight fit in pockets. So I bought a small bag. I’ve got a few old ones I might put on vinted. But will they sell? Who actually uses a handbag nowadays? Not talking about a work tote. Just a handbag in the old fashioned sense. Would be interested to hear what ppl now do.

I don't think I know anyone who doesn't use a handbag.

Having things in your pockets makes clothes look misshapen and it's uncomfortable.

Meadowfinch · 24/01/2026 20:21

I have a small tote, room for a small laptop, for weekdays.

Smaller bags for non-work days. Where else would I keep keys, lipstick, comb, sanpro, hand cream, tissues?

user593 · 24/01/2026 20:28

I have so many nice (expensive!) handbags, and I’m eyeing more, but - truth be told - I rarely use them! I can fit most things in my pockets.

dudsville · 24/01/2026 20:31

In winter, no I don't use a handbag, my coats and clothing have big pockets. In summer I do. I have three - a black, a brown and an oxblood.

Marble10 · 24/01/2026 20:32

I love a bag and will use forever. Even though I guess I could do without one, it’s part of my outfit.

imnottoofussed · 24/01/2026 20:39

I don’t know any woman who doesn’t use a handbag to be honest.

Mines usually got tissues, wallet, keys, lipstick, deodorant or perfume, san pro, mints, a small hairbrush/mirror compact, AirPods, a shopping canvas tote. Sometimes my kindle if I’m on public transport and occasionally an umbrella and gloves when not being used.

BauhausOfEliott · 24/01/2026 20:48

CheeseWisely · 24/01/2026 20:50

I use a backpack when I’m out with DS and a small crossbody when I’m not, or failing that throw everything in my coat pockets, but that won’t work in summer. Have got rid of tons of handbags over the past few years though.

Ozmumofboys3 · 24/01/2026 20:50

I always use a bag, think most women I see do as well 🤔. Mine usually contains, my phone (also used as wallet), keys, reading glasses and a million random receipts 😆

peacefulpeach · 24/01/2026 20:54

I used to collect handbags, in my central London days. Now I don’t carry one at all, ever. 🤷‍♀️

VillaOfReducedCircumstances · 24/01/2026 20:59

I just wear a small cross-body bag if I want to use a bag now. The idea of a handbag seems quite old fashioned to me now.

LividBlah · 24/01/2026 21:02

I have a number of backpacks.

I see "handbags" as being those awful old-fashioned leather things and tools of patriarchy. A woman at work in her mid-20s has one, and I always think it looks like she's cosplaying at being a proper grownup.

Pockets is where it's really at, but until 1997-style combat trousers come back round again I'll use a backpack on the rare occasions when I need more than my phone in my pocket.

Ikeameatballs · 24/01/2026 21:04

I still like a small cross-body bag for most days but I sometimes just use pockets, depends on what I’m wearing and where I’m going. I don’t like big handbags though, prefer a backpack for laptop plus lunch etc for work or a canvas shopper for shopping etc.

Raintoday2323 · 24/01/2026 21:05

Nope, haven't used a handbag for years. Its mainly older women who use them i think.

lightnesspixie · 24/01/2026 21:05

So looks like a very mixed bag (love this pun 🤭) .. it’d be insightful and interesting to break it into age brackets.

I don’t use mine much anymore aside from my work tote for my laptop etc. Phone and keys only mostly. I have some very nice bags but feel like the days of the handbag are numbered for just going to the shops/pub etc.

PixieDust91 · 24/01/2026 21:08

I have a daily crossbody I wear anytime I go out. And then a few more prettier ones I use when I am not running errands :)

I don't think women will ever stop carrying handbags since making pants for women with real pockets is seen as a luxury lol

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/01/2026 21:09

Not a handbag as such, but I have various sling-shaped cross body bags in either leather or fabric (Cos and Arket) that I use daily.

I keep my phone and keys in my pockets, but in my bag I always have a pouch with medication, blister plasters, tampons, folding hairbrush, tissues, pen, mini power bank and other bits, which I move from bag to bag, and also umbrella, beanie hat, whatever lipstick I’m wearing and usually a cereal bar or a couple of Babybel on work days.

I carry a separate tote/shopper with my laptop if I am going into work.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 24/01/2026 21:11

I have one handbag that I use maybe once or twice a month. Mostly I use my pockets or a backpack.

henlake7 · 24/01/2026 21:12

I don't recall the last time I saw somebody with an actual handbag. But lots of people still use cross body bags or backpacks. I have tons of cross body ones.
I usually carry keys, phone, purse and tissues as a minimum and CBA trying to stuff it all in pockets.
I think the pocket only life is quite popular with the yoof though, so Def not me!😆

RosesAndHellebores · 24/01/2026 21:14

I always use a handbag but I am old. Have many: cross body, clutch, grab, tote, etc.

I still use a purse and still use cash. I also carry: house keys, car keys, phone, work phone, work pass, pen, tissues, lipstick, charger, etc. I don't like putting heavy stuff in my pockets, they make things hang badly.

ThisHangryTiger · 24/01/2026 21:14

I love my LV Neverfull (it's a light beige so matches everything) and use it for work, going out etc. If I'm out on a walk though I'll just shove my phone in my coat pocket.

WMW · 24/01/2026 21:15

Have you seriously not seen the contagion of cross-body "fun" strap handbags, OP? They are the new "denim jacket over flowery dress".

Newyearnewnamenew · 24/01/2026 21:15

I decided my New Year’s resolution would be to stop buying clothes and to make the occasional accessory my shopping fix instead.

So now I’m obsessed with looking at handbags. There are so many beautiful brands and so many good sales on at the moment!

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/01/2026 21:18

Handbags are part of my outfit. I have quite a few and what one I take out depends on where I’m going and what I’m wearing. I would always take one though! Never put things in pockets, ruins the lines of your clothes and makes you look lumpy.
