Do women carry handbags anymore?

lightnesspixie · 24/01/2026 20:14

Just this. I’ve just bought a small padded sweaty betty crossover bag because in recent months I just take my phone everywhere not even a wallet and use my pockets for this. Wallet etc is all on my phone. But ive recently wanted to take my kindle out with me and it’s a tight fit in pockets. So I bought a small bag. I’ve got a few old ones I might put on vinted. But will they sell? Who actually uses a handbag nowadays? Not talking about a work tote. Just a handbag in the old fashioned sense. Would be interested to hear what ppl now do.

Don’t you go out the house and see people? I mean that nicely as I can only think you don’t if you don’t know if women use bags or not?

the answer is yes, most women use a hand bag of some variation,

K0OLA1D · 25/01/2026 07:36

Very rare I take a bag out with me unless its 'out out'. If its a day trip I take a ruck sack!

I just take my phone out and key

Foxhasbigsocks · 25/01/2026 07:37

I never use a handbag

Newusername0 · 25/01/2026 08:08

I think there may be generational differences at play. For the most part me and my peers don’t use handbags. My mum had one with her everywhere though. She had tissues, mirror, mints, a massive set of keys for EVERYTHING and god knows what else in there!

Everything I need is on my phone for the most part. I then have a car key and front door key. They can absolutely go in my pocket.

paristotokyo · 25/01/2026 08:10

I have my Uniqlo (yes that one) with me every time I go out. Where else will I put my tissues, lip balm, car keys, supplement pill box, random receipts, perfume samples, paracetamol, ibuprofen, random pens and board marker, random kids toy, hair bobbles and chewing gum?

DelinquentSnails · 25/01/2026 08:11

I can’t imagine leaving the house on an outing that does not require a bag of some description. Not necessarily handbag, but a dog walk bag with poo bags and dog treats (unless I want my coat pockets contaminated with tiny pieces of cheese), a backpack for a day out at the zoo or with the kids in London london, a work bag full of all sort, a gym bag or some sort of suede or leather tote for a standard outing for an appointment, nipping to the shops, meeting friends etc.

My standard handbag contents are car keys, phone, sanpro handcream, Kindle, lipgloss, water bottle, hairbrush. How are people fitting all this into their pockets? And if people are only taking their phone and car keys, are they not worried about losing them from their pocket having them lifted on public transport or in a crowded place? And don’t it make your coats hang oddly/ look lumpy?

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 25/01/2026 08:12

Uses handbag daily. Make up touch up kit, medicines I may need. Need something cute to carry

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 25/01/2026 08:14

I have a couple of belt bags (I can just about fit my kindle in) but often will go out with my phone and a bag for life in my pocket.

gototogo · 25/01/2026 08:16

Depends where I’m going and for how long and what I’m wearing! Work I have a bag with things I need including home and work keys, car key, umbrella, folded shopping bag, personal bits etc. on a weekend I might take my work bag if heading out into the city or for the day whereas i have a smaller bag if I need a few bits but not an umbrella. Going to the pub locally i usually just shove my phone in my pocket unless I don’t have a pocket in which case I’ve got tiny cross body bags

Yes, when I was young I did sometimes just go out with a purse and a key, my purse had everything I needed, much like a phone nowadays, this was in the 70s and 80s, as I got older I needed more stuff. We used to use those booths to take silly pictures of ourselves rather than use a camera which is now on the phone, I can remember all piling in the photo booth for some pictures

unless it can be proved beyond doubt otherwise, smart devices are (from what I’ve read) dangerous to keep on your body, like in a pocket.

So whether one is fifteen, thirty, sixty, or ninety, a place to put a smart device AWAY from your body, should always be your go to.

Also, like others have said, where the heck would you put items like keys, lippy, small pack of tissues, any emergency or regular medications you rely on, plus items that are necessary to each person as an individual.

Even if you didn’t need to carry any “extras”, I agree with other pp that shoving items in pockets is not a good look.

Theres so much choice out there re “handbags”, so it really doesn’t have to be an old fashioned granny bag.

Even guys are more open to carrying a “man bag”, which is great, coz how many times have I been out with a guy, and he’s requested to “pop this into your bag for me darling”, NO! get your own bloomin bag!!!

Of course I will get slammed for my first paragraph, but hey its your life, your choice, but please get yourself informed of up to date info about the dangers of close contact with any smart devices.
No, I’m not a conspiracy theorist 🤦‍♀️

I don't think this is true at all

RampantIvy · 25/01/2026 08:28

If I am going out for the evening I will have a small smart bag with phone, keys, eye drops, tissues and lipstick/lip balm. I always have a little "emergency pack" containing migraine medication, Gaviscon and Immodium as well.

If I am out for the day sightseeing or visiting a place of interest I usually have my Uniqlo bag with the above plus sunglasses, folding shopping bag and maybe a small bottle of water.

If I am just nipping to the supermarket I put my phone in my pocket.

I'm always amazed at the amount of stuff some women cart around with them.

Owly11 · 25/01/2026 08:28

I have never used a handbag and stopped using cross body bags about 20 years ago. If needed I use a rucksack.

Petrine · 25/01/2026 08:44

I love bags and have a lot of them in various designs and colours. My most recent acquisition was a lovely Strathberry kite hobo which my husband bought me for Christmas.

I never leave home without one other than to walk my dog.

ThrowingDi · 25/01/2026 08:55

I’m in my 20s and I don’t use bags often, I try and leave with minimal things to reduce risk of theft/loss. I’m never that far from home, I drive everywhere and worst case scenario the walk home wouldn’t be long enough to need a bag.

I just need my phone & keys when going out. AirPods I can take out without the case so that’s no footprint at all. And then maybe a travel charger for my phone which magnetically attaches to my phone

if I’m going to work in office I’d bring a laptop bag where outside of tech I’d add in things like wipes or makeup.

I do have a makeup bag that can be used as a clutch bag without looking daft, but it’s high end and I worry about being robbed, so I just only use that inside other bags. A shame really as it’s a good size for phone, keys, AirPods, charger and a bit of makeup. I do have a few night out small bags but I don’t use these during the day.

I was considering buying a gym bag but I don’t think I’d use it that often. The staple thing I bring to the gym is a water bottle. I don’t always use or need things like a barbell pad or other equipment

RainbowBagels · 25/01/2026 09:03

I never used to, but I impulse bought one on holiday. I love it. Even if I have a backpack, I take it. It has space for my phone, a lip balm, tissues, a small water bottle/coffee mug and my purse. I do use the crossbody strap most of the time though so I suppose its a crossbody bag!

RainbowBagels · 25/01/2026 09:06

billiongulls · 25/01/2026 08:25

I don't think this is true at all

Is it definitely not true? I was going to tell my kids this as they put their phones in their pockets.
@ThrowingDi Never change! The amount of space and money I would have if only I didnt have a bag habit from my 20's!

GrooveArmada · 25/01/2026 09:07

Of course. I use my work handbags, travel bags + handbags as well as day to day crossover/bumbags as it's easier with children. Fortunately more trousers now have pockets and I agree, my purse is tiny now. I do pop out to the shop or school drop off without a bag a lot, it's handy. But I like having my bits and bobs in my handbag with me, not in bulging pockets.

Cyclingmummy1 · 25/01/2026 09:12

Yes, I love handbags.

GameOfJones · 25/01/2026 09:15

I use a cross body bag most days. I like to carry my phone, purse, a power bank, kindle, my house key and air pods plus lip balm, perfume, tissues and sanpro. If I need to take more out with me (water bottle, sunglasses or lunch etc) then I've got a smart rucksack I'd use or a canvas tote.

It's much easier to keep everything in one bag than to swap things in and out of different pockets.

I'm in my 30s and I only know one woman who doesn't use a bag of some description.....and she's always got pockets full of receipts and has to ask if she needs a tissue.

Nevertriedcaviar · 25/01/2026 09:20

I have over a dozen handbags and I use them according to what I need for the day. A small one if I only need my phone, my bank card and some tissues, and a large one if I need makeup, Kindle plus the above.

I think it would be bizarre not to carry a handbag.

BloodyHellBob · 25/01/2026 09:20

I rarely use a bag these days and to be honest, if clothing manufacturers put better pockets in women’s clothing then I’d stop using handbags altogether.

TheDandyLion · 25/01/2026 09:47

Not if I can help it. All the bits and bobs that I might need live on the shelf near the entrance way and I only pick up the things that I might need for that particular outing. If I can get away with just a few items in coat pocket then great otherwise I'd pick up a cotton tote or backpack if its a substantial amount of stuff.

Of course I do 😂😂 I put phone and keys in my coat pocket. Maybe a lip balm too. That’s it. Drive to meet them. Or walk to pub. Pay on phone. Never use cash. I don’t neex to take the kitchen sink with me. For work I have a tote bag for laptop and documents. But that’s different. Are you suggesting a person is completely housebound without a handbag? Well this is novel 🙄🤭

SabrinaCarpetCleaner · 25/01/2026 10:04

My daughter is 15, and she would laugh in my face if I suggested a rucksack or backpack. She always has a bag with her, tote for school and cross body for weekends.

I think the idea of it being generational is nonsense. I think perhaps the difference is high/low maintenance or occasion. Coach bags seem to be very fashionable at the moment, I see oodles of young women (usually polished to perfection) carrying/wearing Coach bags. The only women I see not carrying bags are those with hair scraped back, no make up and the wearable duvet jacket. I'm not criticising either 'look' btw, just highlighting how handbags are not generational.
