Do women carry handbags anymore?

Just this. I’ve just bought a small padded sweaty betty crossover bag because in recent months I just take my phone everywhere not even a wallet and use my pockets for this. Wallet etc is all on my phone. But ive recently wanted to take my kindle out with me and it’s a tight fit in pockets. So I bought a small bag. I’ve got a few old ones I might put on vinted. But will they sell? Who actually uses a handbag nowadays? Not talking about a work tote. Just a handbag in the old fashioned sense. Would be interested to hear what ppl now do.

I dont use a bag. But I’m a sahm just now, I did when I was at work. Even then though, it was more a tote with a few bits, I’ve never understood spending hundreds or even thousands on bags. Nuts to me.

BlackCat14 · 24/01/2026 21:21

I’ve always used a handbag but weirdly stopped since having a baby. It’s easier to just shove a lip balm and hair brush in his change bag, and keep my phone and keys in my pocket. He got so out of the habit now that even when I go out without him I don’t take a bag. Phone, keys, lip balm in pocket. May change when the weather gets nicer and I’m not wearing a coat anymore!

Captainj1 · 24/01/2026 21:21

I don’t use a bag any more. I have my phone on a lanyard thing and just chuck that over my shoulder. I have a few different ones including a black chain one that looks nicer for nights out. I tie my keys to the string of it and I have no need for anything else. I pay for stuff with my watch or my ring. I don’t really wear much makeup but sometimes shove a lip gloss or salve in my pocket or in the laces of my trainers. I love not having to worry about where my bag is when I go off to dance or whether someone has their eye on it.

For work I have a backpack with my laptop in and cables, chargers, notebooks etc.

I don't use one day to day anymore. There are far less of them around i think because so many people work from home. When I was office based I used a bag every day. Now, if I'm nipping to the shops/pub/local restaurant etc, all I need is my phone and a lip balm and they fit easily into my coat pockets. If I go on a night out or to an event- wedding, christening, party, races etc then I'll take a small bag.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/01/2026 21:30

Loads and loads of bags for me, all crossbody

FairyGardensx · 24/01/2026 21:44

I own a back pack never been into hand arm bags.
Just me and my lucky back pack.

wertgyhjk · 24/01/2026 21:46

I don't own a handbag. I do carry far too much stuff around on a daily basis, but I use a backpack for that.

Diversion · 24/01/2026 21:49

I use a backpack everyday. I only use a handbag if I am going out to eat or similar. I am not particularly girly so it's a military style one with lots of pockets and compartments. I also carry far too much stuff around and it is a little like Mary Poppins carpet bag.

AreYouSureAskedNaomi · 24/01/2026 21:52

I see many women around who don't use handbags. Phone and car keys in hands or pockets. They drive everywhere so no need to carry anything else.

GoodVibesHere · 24/01/2026 21:55

I'm in my 50's and just use a backpack for carrying my laptop to work. On weekends most stuff just goes in my coat pocket.

Years ago I would use lovely leather slouchy bags, and posh leather handbags but that's a thing of the past now that I don't need a purse, it's all on my phone.

RedRiverShore6 · 24/01/2026 21:55

My phone barely fits in my pocket, I generally use a crossbody Kipling bag as they have lots of pockets for my tissues, glasses, phone, purse, keys, wipes and anything else I carry

BrennieGirl · 24/01/2026 21:59

Bags are part of my outfit so I’ll never give them
up. I don’t consider them old fashioned at all. I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t use one - even my DDs aged 18 and 21.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 24/01/2026 22:02

I dont think it’s a split by ages thing, more a split by those who are out for the whole day vs those who are closer to home. (With a side of - those who travel by public transport and those who drive everywhere and can leave things in their car).

On work days, I take:
phone
headphones
house keys
work keys
work pass
Card holder/small wallet
lip balm
a little pouch containing some San pro, plasters and paracetamol
a book or kindle
a couple of pens and pencils
small notebook
food (sometimes just a snack like a piece of fruit or oat bar, sometimes full lunch)

occasionally I have to take a folder to and from work but that’s not regular thing.

I don’t need a massive bag- but this is more than my pockets can manage.

on non-work days I’ll often just take my phone and house keys when I go out (add a roll of poo bags if I’m out with the dog!) so apart from in summer when I don’t wear a coat, I can just put stuff in my pockets.

ReignOfError · 24/01/2026 22:05

I have one handbag and I couldn’t tell you where it is. I have pockets, one sling bag I use in summer which holds my phone, spare credit card, glasses case and a book, and backpacks for days out/when I have grandkids’ crap to carry. Oh, and one evening bag, stupid little thing that’s all style and no substance, but occasionally needs must.

ChilliGarlicMango · 24/01/2026 22:07

I use my Fjallraven backpack for most things 🤷‍♀️ I’m 35. I don’t think any of my friends my age would use a handbag - it would all be backpacks/ canvas totes. We live in London - not sure if that makes a difference.

HappyFace2025 · 24/01/2026 22:13

OP do you mean handbags like the late Queen used or contemporary ones like shoulder bags/hobos/cross body ones?

I always have a wallet with me as I'm worried if I use just my phone to pay for stuff what happens ift phone gets lost or stolen 🤔

RobinEllacotStrike · 24/01/2026 22:16

I’ve been out all day in london today - with a handbag.

tissues, lippy, small hairbrush, phone charger, drink, keys, almonds (snack) - won’t all fit in my pockets.

billiongulls · 24/01/2026 22:16

Well I use a bag. Of some kind. Might be a back pack, a tote, a cross body bag, depends on the circumstances, how much I want to carry. . Not really a tradional handbag though.

RobinEllacotStrike · 24/01/2026 22:18

If I’m going out locally I might just take my phone, but my key ring is a bit bulky so it depends what I’m doing. Often it’s just easier & less stressful to have a bag.

Flomingho · 24/01/2026 22:18

I'm a backpack girl. On nights outlander dresser occasions I will use a handbag and recently got a small Roka crossover bag which fits my phone, purse and keys when out and about.

RedRiverShore6 · 24/01/2026 22:20

I'm old and I don't think I have ever had a handbag with handles, just casual crossbody bags for general wear and a clutch type bag for posh stuff when I might wear a dress which isn't very often, maybe a wedding or something like that

RabbitFurCoat · 24/01/2026 22:21

ThisHangryTiger · 24/01/2026 21:14

I love my LV Neverfull (it's a light beige so matches everything) and use it for work, going out etc. If I'm out on a walk though I'll just shove my phone in my coat pocket.

The fact that I had to google this because I didn't twig what LV was shows how likely it'll be that I ever own one. There I was feeling frivolous for spending my Christmas money on a couple of silver rings and getting my ears repierced. 😆

RedRiverShore6 · 24/01/2026 22:26

There was a fashion a few years ago for those Longchamp bags but they are annoying as they don't have many pockets and have silly little uncomfortable handles,

RabbitFurCoat · 24/01/2026 22:31

I get a cranking neck ache from wearing anything that doesn't sit on both shoulders too long. I have a leather tote that I got secondhand from ebay, it was repaired by the reseller, I'll probably keep that for a long time - but it's for throwing my stuff in and chucking into the car, and more often than not I just grab a fabric tote.

PurpleCoo · 24/01/2026 22:58

Of course people use handbags. But they aren't suitable for every situation.

Hiking/dog walking = backpack
Work/dinner out/other situation where you are in dresses = handbag

I don't have anything boring like black, but have lovely colourful Radley bags that I coordinate with my dress /tights/shoes. I get a lot of comments about how well 'put together' my outfits are, and do a lot with colour.
