Do you have clothes in your wardrobe right now for these events?

I'm always struck by posts from people who don't seem to have a range of clothes to carry them through a variety of life events. I get that people dress mostly for the day to day stuff but i always assumed that you also had other, lesser worn perhaps, clothes in the wardrobe to be used as needed.

I reckon i could dress for most eventualities if pushed

With no notice could you dress for:

  1. A funeral
  1. A formal work presentation / meeting
  1. A party in a fancy bar or similar
  1. Dinner & drinks where its dressier than jeans
  1. A gig
  1. A walk in the countryside / forest etc
  1. A date where you'd like to impress / make an effort
  1. Regular work from home or office day that's not pjs or gym gear

I'm curious - i don't have gym gear & or wellies & i need new walking shoes / boots as mine are old & worn out.

These are my gaps but i could dress for the rest in the morning if i had to.

Yes, but only if you consider joggers and a t-shirt appropriate for all those occasions

ParisianLady · 20/01/2026 21:30

Yes, I could without any bother with several options for each scenario.

MushyPeasAndMintSauce · 20/01/2026 21:31

I could dress for those occasions you've listed

  1. A funeral - yes
  2. A formal work presentation / meeting -yes. I do this most weeks
  3. A party in a fancy bar or similar - yes, a few dresses smart trousers, tops, skirts etc
  4. Dinner & drinks where its dressier than jeans - yes, quite a few choices and we do this often
  5. A gig - yes, it’s just jeans and a T-shirt, comfy shoes,
  6. A walk in the countryside / forest etc - depends on weather, I’ve walking shoes, but nothing like water proof trousers and no heavy water proof coats, but a jumper, raincoat and sure, I could do it.
  7. A date where you'd like to impress / make an effort - yes,
  8. Regular work from home or office day that's not pjs or gym gear - yes.
Hadalifeonce · 20/01/2026 21:33

Yes, including gym gear, wellies and walking boots. Mostly left over from before retirement, but as I didn't buy 'fashionable clothes' , they are still very wearable now.

JaneJeffer · 20/01/2026 21:33

I’m exhausted thinking of having to attend all these scenarios apart from the walk.

Forestwanderer · 20/01/2026 21:33

I pretty much only ever wear black top/and bottom, year round and have an assortment of clothes (black) suitable for all of those occasions 😃

Wiaa · 20/01/2026 21:33

Yes except maybe really formal work wear, historically i always wore a smart tailored dress but i haven't needed to for years so i don't think I still have 1

Newbie8918 · 20/01/2026 21:34

Yup. All without any bother.

It also blows my mind when posters say they only have 3 pairs of shoes or one handbag. I’ve go over 100 pairs of shoes……don’t come for me, I know I’m in the minority here!

Christmaseree · 20/01/2026 21:34

Not the formal work presentation thing.

Purlant · 20/01/2026 21:34

Yes, but a lot of these sound like the same sort of outfits to me!

2026IsMyYear · 20/01/2026 21:35

Am i missing occassions?

I deliberately didn't put wedding guest as that's a v particular thing.

I don’t have proper footwear for a trek in a forest but I have the rest.
Actually I’m short on very smart work clothes, I’m dieting and trying to not replace clothes too frequently.
But I splurged on a bunch of going out clothes for my last holiday.
And unfortunately have had far too many funerals in the last three years.

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/01/2026 21:36

I’d be fine with all of those, I might not have lots of choices eg 1 funeral dress, but I’d definitely manage all of them from my wardrobe.

Wisperley · 20/01/2026 21:37

Couldn't manage the party in the fancy bar.

BooksandCats123 · 20/01/2026 21:38

Yes I do, I could probably come up with a few options for each event.. This tells me I don’t need to keep buying clothes.

Foggytree · 20/01/2026 21:38

I've got stuff for a gig as its basically jeans and a t shirt, stuff for a country walk, and stuff for casual wfh or the office .

A funeral would depend - i might have to get a dark coat as I have only got pale coats.

Stuff for parties / dressier events would be a struggle. I have a summer dress but thats all.

LittleArithmetics · 20/01/2026 21:39

I'd be struggling a bit for the date and the party in fancy venue. Partly due to weight changing. Some of the occasions I'd only be okay for certain times of year.

Wisperley · 20/01/2026 21:37

Couldn't manage the party in the fancy bar.

That's the one i'm most prepared for, despite dustinct lack of actual parties 🤣

I'm fatally attracted to beautiful going out clothes. Always have been

TheToteBagLady · 20/01/2026 21:40

Yes, but only because I’ve spent a lot of time and money updating my wardrobe over the past 3 years or so, and having specific outfits for specific purpose.

I had to buy my kids (teens) new clothes and shoes for a funeral recently.
I would have to do the same for a wedding

Wiaa · 20/01/2026 21:40

@Newbie8918 oh thats sort of me, i have more than 3 actual pairs of footwear but i genuinely have a few pairs of trainers, 1 pair of slightly heeled going out shoes, black grey and brown ankle boots all pretty much impossible to walk more than 100m in! a pair of walking boots and a pair of old faithful sandals. I really eally struggle to find shoes that fit so i just don't bother

NormasArse · 20/01/2026 21:40

Most of my clothes are outdoor gear, but I could cobble something together for the other occasions. Might not be on trend, but I rarely throw good clothes out, so there will be something lurking in my wardrobe.

2026IsMyYear · 20/01/2026 21:41

What i'm short on is is nice casual saturday mooching around the city / lunch type clothes
