Do you have clothes in your wardrobe right now for these events?

I'm always struck by posts from people who don't seem to have a range of clothes to carry them through a variety of life events. I get that people dress mostly for the day to day stuff but i always assumed that you also had other, lesser worn perhaps, clothes in the wardrobe to be used as needed.

I reckon i could dress for most eventualities if pushed

With no notice could you dress for:

  1. A funeral
  1. A formal work presentation / meeting
  1. A party in a fancy bar or similar
  1. Dinner & drinks where its dressier than jeans
  1. A gig
  1. A walk in the countryside / forest etc
  1. A date where you'd like to impress / make an effort
  1. Regular work from home or office day that's not pjs or gym gear

I'm curious - i don't have gym gear & or wellies & i need new walking shoes / boots as mine are old & worn out.

These are my gaps but i could dress for the rest in the morning if i had to.

I have all of that. Because I’m nearly 60 and I’ve kept clothes since my early 20’s. The last couple of weekends I wore a 20 year old dress and another 15 year old outfit. Really gorgeous Nicole Farhi dress, Chloe jeans and Paul Smith jumper.
Shoes many many fewer! In fact the second outfit needed better shoes, I wore trainers but would have been better with loafers or whatever’s on trend now.

Perhaps this is cultural?

I grew up in Ireland & i'm always AMAZED when people say on here that they've never been to a funeral or have only been to one or two ever

That's litetaily inconcievable in Ireland. By my 30s i'd been to dozens of funerals from extended family to family friends, neighbours, towns people etc

Me too - as in amazed. Not Irish, I'm English.

But I belong to things. I have friends of all ages.

I guess there is a correlation between rarely having been to a funeral and not having any friends though.

Pleasantly surprised it’s just the one situation I’d struggle with!

OneNewEagle · 20/01/2026 22:58

I don’t have clothes for a lot of those. I’m no longer working due to my health so I cleared all my old office style clothes. I’ve got one smart black suit put away incase of an emergency (funeral attire with a decent blouse).

I’ve got casual clothes for at home so leggings or patterned trousers and old tops p. I’ve got nicer options of those for popping out to the shops plus jeans jeggings nice tops for the weekend. I have going for walks in woods or down to the coat clothes roo. Just need some new shoes. Then I have shorts and vest tops for the summer. I can only wear comfy flat shoes due to my disability sadly.

But last autumn I finally got rid of everything else. So I’ve got nothing to wear for a meal or a night out as I don’t do those things, nothing to wear to an office or for a job interview and nothing to wear to a special occasion. I felt so much better that it’s all gone and then……I’ve got a wedding invite. I have absolutely nothing whatsoever to wear no outfit, no shoes, I’m not sure i have even got a bag.

Pistachiocake · 20/01/2026 23:12

Would it count if I say I have the clothes, but nor all will fit me?

Nomedshere · 20/01/2026 23:12

I own nothing formal apart from 1 pair of black trousers which would do for a funeral if I went to them
I wear jeans, and gym gear.
I don't go to parties, or formal occasions and don't possess a dress or skirt.
Plenty of walking gear.

TheReverendBeeb · 20/01/2026 23:22

The only ones that I have outfits for are a walk and a gig.

I am retired and never go to fancy parties or events as I don't have that sort of lifestyle. I do dress up occasionally for a meal out but certainly not cocktail dress style.

I have been to far too many funerals over the past 20 years (all family ones sadly) but none of them have involved wearing black (we don't tend to have traditional funerals in my family).

I don't own any gym wear or lounge wear or leggings, and dress in trousers, jeans, jumpsuits, dresses or skirts everyday so my wardrobe is varied but not "dressy".

MonGrainDeSel · 20/01/2026 23:24

I could do nearly all of those but would struggle a bit with really formal work meeting as that's not a situation I'm ever going to be in (v casual industry and people would be actively put off if I dressed formally).

I don't understand this bit: "Regular work from home or office day that's not pjs or gym gear" - do people not wear normal clothes to work from home? I do. I would never wear either of these things while working (usually jeans/T shirt).

I don't know @MonGrainDeSel i think lots of people seem to wear fleeces / gym gear etc working from home, certainly judging by what's posted on MN.

I work from home 2 x day a week most weeks & i wear decent jumpers & jersey trousers mostly.

I can no longer dress for work. Have retired, have lost weight and have passed on my old work clothes.

Geraaf · 20/01/2026 23:33

Yes, although some of them wouldn't fit well as I've put on weight. I'm always reluctant to do a clear out of clothes as you never know what occasion might come up!

HippyChickMama · 20/01/2026 23:38

Yes to all of these, particularly the funeral as I almost exclusively wear black, but do have a couple of more colourful dresses in case of wedding invitations. By colourful, I mean navy or dark green 😂 but I do have nude/pale pink hat and shoes to wear with them

ChocolateCinderToffee · 20/01/2026 23:42

I have a pair of smart black trousers that I’d wear with a good shirt for 1-4. A suit if really necessary. For the rest, jeans.

I’m with the person who said jogging pants for everything, tbh. A lot of ‘occasions’ are just an excuse to buy more clothes. I own four pairs of smart shoes, two pairs of trainers, a pair of ankle boots and three pairs of sandals. Five handbags.

Quite enough.

FrangipaniBlue · 20/01/2026 23:44

Yes to all of those and I’d add:

Gym/Workout gear
Running Gear
Cycling Gear
Wedding

🤣

Vetoncall · 20/01/2026 23:45

Yes to all of that list. I have fewer options for formal/really dressy events but still at least a few things suitable for each one, and I could do a wedding as well. The formal workwear would be the most limited as I wear scrubs/jeans and trainers to work, but I still have a nice trouser suit and a few shirts/blouses etc. (these can also double as funeral wear).

I could easily dress 10 people for country walks, hiking and the gym; I have an obscene amount of outdoorsy, country, athleisure and gym type clothes. I have 12+ pairs of Lululemon leggings alone.

NoraLuka · 20/01/2026 23:48

I could manage the clothes for all those occasions but not the shoes. I have trainers, wellies, hiking boots, flip flops, football boots and motorcycle boots but nothing that would work if I had to dress up.

Gotitgotit · 20/01/2026 23:49

I have a job that involves wearing a uniform.
Days off I wear jeans and if meeting a friend I wear smart jeans .
Cannot understand how anyone actually remembers meeting a friend and clocking what they are wearing! Absolutely not on my radar and would hate to have friends that are like that !
Feels very shallow TBH

Catwoman8 · 20/01/2026 23:51

Easily..I have far too many clothes though. I have a winter and summer wardrobe as I dont have enough space for it all.

I have limited formal work wear but that's it, I have an abundance of everything else.

I guess i don't understand how you could be in someone's company & not see what they're wearing?

I'm a very observant person in general & i love clothes so i 'see' them.

I'd make a v good witness as i can recall great detail.

I don't think its shallow. That's your own projection. I said i take notice. Not that i judge. Two different things

All of them, easily and add black tie, wedding, including the immediate bridal party, the races, receiving an honour, visiting the Houses of Parliament, Royal Garden party- really any social event, and in any weather (excluding Arctic / Antarctic exploration)

I couldn't do any of these but I've no interest in doing them.
Gym/Workout gear
Running Gear
Cycling Gear

Changename12 · 21/01/2026 00:28

I could do all of those but I wouldn’t be the smartest dressed at these occasions.
I would excel at a walk in the woods. I have a whole wardrobe of walking clothes and several pairs of well fitting comfortable boots.

330ml · 21/01/2026 00:29

Yes to all, with options.

Woodfiresareamazing · 21/01/2026 00:38

2026IsMyYear · 20/01/2026 21:39

That's the one i'm most prepared for, despite dustinct lack of actual parties 🤣

I'm fatally attracted to beautiful going out clothes. Always have been

Me too!
Pre-Covid I used to go to far more parties/events that I needed to dress up for, which I loved.
I also collected vintage clothing.
So I could probably dress up event-style every day for at least 4 months and wear something different each time.

Maybe I should just do that anyway 🤔

Yes! You most definiteiy should!! That would be amazing.

I love seeing people wearing unique / vintage styles.

I have a couple of vintage things but i also love a bit of detail, nice buttons, embroidery, beading etc

My friend once said my clothes look like they could have come from another era. Which i took as.a massive compliment.
