Do you have clothes in your wardrobe right now for these events?

I'm always struck by posts from people who don't seem to have a range of clothes to carry them through a variety of life events. I get that people dress mostly for the day to day stuff but i always assumed that you also had other, lesser worn perhaps, clothes in the wardrobe to be used as needed.

I reckon i could dress for most eventualities if pushed

With no notice could you dress for:

  1. A funeral
  1. A formal work presentation / meeting
  1. A party in a fancy bar or similar
  1. Dinner & drinks where its dressier than jeans
  1. A gig
  1. A walk in the countryside / forest etc
  1. A date where you'd like to impress / make an effort
  1. Regular work from home or office day that's not pjs or gym gear

I'm curious - i don't have gym gear & or wellies & i need new walking shoes / boots as mine are old & worn out.

These are my gaps but i could dress for the rest in the morning if i had to.

Yes, but only if you consider joggers and a t-shirt appropriate for all those occasions

🤣🤣

MikeRafone · 20/01/2026 22:15

im fine as have a couple of pairs of black trousers and a couple of simple black, grey tops/shorts and a colourful shirt for more dressy - simple

thing is most people don't remember what someone else wore

Waitingfordoggo · 20/01/2026 22:15

My wardrobe consists of: gym kit, dog walking clothes, pyjamas. Then I have some leggings, T-shirts and hoodies. So I’m all set for country walks, exercise sessions, going to a gig or to the pub.

I have a small handful of dresses which can be worn to a funeral, wedding or smart restaurant- but all of them at least 5 years old so not fashionable or current. I hate any expectation of dressing up or dressing formally. The phrase that makes my heart sink is ‘Dress to Impress!’ I am not in a position to impress anyone with my clothes, and nor do I want to. I would really struggle with knowing what to wear to a formal work meeting or presentation as I have never had to go to anything like that in my nearly 50 years on the planet!

Cyclingmummy1 · 20/01/2026 22:16

Yes to all.

MikeRafone · 20/01/2026 22:16

can I wear my dressing down to anything - its really comfy

Dollos · 20/01/2026 22:17

the right black dress could cover 5 of those occasions.

I desperate for a capsule wardrobe but my style is all over the place

Thedogswhiskers · 20/01/2026 22:18

I do have an outfit for all that but could I always fit it 🤔

Sorry @MikeRafone i do notice & remember lots of what people wear.

If you are interested in clothes / style etc i think you naturally pay attention.

My fav thing is people watching, especially if away in another city. I love seeing how people dress & am often inspired by what i see

I’ve literally just moved back to the UK, arrived back a week ago so only have the clothes in the cases I brought with me on the flight back and I could easily do all of the above with options for most too.

Perhaps technically but for me the black dress i would wear to a cocktaik party would be v different to a black dress i'd wear to work or a funeral

OP posts:
FlorenceLyons · 20/01/2026 22:27

Definitely - and multiple options for most. The only one I’d come close to struggling with is a funeral where the expectation was all black, as I rarely wear black. I could cobble something together if need be, though, it just wouldn’t be an outfit I’d wear out of choice.

RecordBreakers · 20/01/2026 22:27

Yes, I have all those.

I mean, dh might have something to say about me going to impress someone on a date, but in terms of having all those clothes to hand, yes, I have.

It amazes me how often people on MN ask where they can get something / is this outfit okay for a funeral. Obviously excepting a young adult who might be attending their first funeral, how can anyone (lets say 40 onwards) not have something suitable for a funeral in their wardrobe.

A pair of classic black trousers can take most people to most occasions.

Knittedanimal · 20/01/2026 22:30

I have an obscene amount of clothes. Over 100 dresses. I used to have 69 coats but probably closer to 50 these days. I have things to suit all of those occasions plus 1940s/50s/60s outfits, a full length cloak and a netted, sequinned mermaid dress, suitable only for a Taylor Swift show 😊 I often clothe friends who are lacking in the wardrobe department. But I am a total amateur compared to my magnificent late mum, who had 13 double wardrobes, including a collection of 24 silk shirts, in every shade, and 197 pairs of shoes.
80% of both our clothes collections from charity shops.

CrotchetyQuaver · 20/01/2026 22:34

Yes to all of those
could add black tie to that as well
i have far too many clothes in various sizes and shoes/boots (especially boots) and need to have a cull this year....

Newbie8918 · 20/01/2026 22:40

Wiaa · 20/01/2026 21:40

@Newbie8918 oh thats sort of me, i have more than 3 actual pairs of footwear but i genuinely have a few pairs of trainers, 1 pair of slightly heeled going out shoes, black grey and brown ankle boots all pretty much impossible to walk more than 100m in! a pair of walking boots and a pair of old faithful sandals. I really eally struggle to find shoes that fit so i just don't bother

shoes are my guilty pleasure I think. I know it’s excessive but I love the ‘right’ pair of shoes with an outfit. I do have several pairs that I’ve had for over 10 years and I look after them!

VictoriaEra · 20/01/2026 22:40

i Have almost all the stuff you list - particularly the formal and semi formal. Loads of dresses and glam frocks. Also suits etc. great for my imaginary life.
I have one pair of too small joggers and no leggings.

EnchantedDaytime · 20/01/2026 22:41

Yes to all of these. With some overlap and some of the items I have had for 20 years or more. Could also do summer or winter weddings. No to black tie though.

  1. A funeral - seem to go to at least one a year.
  2. A formal work presentation / meeting - do this every few weeks
  3. A party in a fancy bar or similar - yes
  4. Dinner & drinks where its dressier than jeans - probably the same as 3
  5. A gig - yes plenty of jeans and tee shirts
  6. A walk in the countryside / forest etc - I volunteer on a nature reserve
  7. A date where you'd like to impress / make an effort - overlap with 3 and 4
  8. Regular work from home or office day that's not pjs or gym gear - yes this is my default.

I don’t work in an office and haven’t owned a pair of smart black trousers in about 20 years. I do have a long knitted black skirt but my only two black tops are not smart at all, I wear them under winter jumpers. I don’t have a black coat either!
Of the only two funerals I’ve been to in the past decade, one was summer and didn’t need to be all black so I found something suitable. And the other was at a natural burial ground and not that style. There was one other funeral a couple of years ago that I would have had to go shopping for but in the end I had Covid so didn’t go.

notatinydancer · 20/01/2026 22:41

Yes , I don’t have any wellies , but I have walking boots.

HundredMilesAnHour · 20/01/2026 22:41

Newbie8918 · 20/01/2026 21:34

Yup. All without any bother.

It also blows my mind when posters say they only have 3 pairs of shoes or one handbag. I’ve go over 100 pairs of shoes……don’t come for me, I know I’m in the minority here!

Agree. No bother for any of them as I have a selection of outfits for each one. I thought that was pretty normal for most people but I guess not?

2025mustbebetter · 20/01/2026 22:44

I could do all of these except fancy party wear. I did have some jut hit rid of it all because im too fat and never go anywhere!

I do have pretty low standards though so a lot of these would be similar outfits tbh.

Actually not sure I could do great at a formal work event. If I had an interview I'd probably go buy a smart jacket.

2026IsMyYear · 20/01/2026 22:47

Perhaps this is cultural?

I grew up in Ireland & i'm always AMAZED when people say on here that they've never been to a funeral or have only been to one or two ever

That's litetaily inconcievable in Ireland. By my 30s i'd been to dozens of funerals from extended family to family friends, neighbours, towns people etc

OP posts:
FunMustard · 20/01/2026 22:47

Everything apart from a trek in the woods I think I could manage. I have a dress I've worn for both work and parties, although for work it's paired with a jacket!
