Do you have clothes in your wardrobe right now for these events?

I'm always struck by posts from people who don't seem to have a range of clothes to carry them through a variety of life events. I get that people dress mostly for the day to day stuff but i always assumed that you also had other, lesser worn perhaps, clothes in the wardrobe to be used as needed.

I reckon i could dress for most eventualities if pushed

With no notice could you dress for:

  1. A funeral
  1. A formal work presentation / meeting
  1. A party in a fancy bar or similar
  1. Dinner & drinks where its dressier than jeans
  1. A gig
  1. A walk in the countryside / forest etc
  1. A date where you'd like to impress / make an effort
  1. Regular work from home or office day that's not pjs or gym gear

I'm curious - i don't have gym gear & or wellies & i need new walking shoes / boots as mine are old & worn out.

These are my gaps but i could dress for the rest in the morning if i had to.

Yes. I work full time, have been to family funerals recently, live in the country, love dressing up, wear smartish clothes at work - so I have all those clothes.

Floisme · 20/01/2026 21:41

I’m retired now so I’d have to give a formal work meeting some thought and I might not get it quite right.

I don’t like the countryside - I’m an urban walker - so I don’t have the specialist clothing but could get by providing the weather was reasonable.

All the rest - yes no problem.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 20/01/2026 21:42

I dont have 90% of this, if I needed it id go out and get it i guess?

I dont think its due my thoughts on over consumption, though I do have strong thoughts on it and thinks like clothes hauls online or millions of shoes and bags is nauseating.

WhosMadeline · 20/01/2026 21:42

I could. Also have walking boots, wellies and running stuff. I don’t have a lot of options though and lots of it has been worn lots of times before. Also I lend and borrow work and occasion clothes with a friend.

Owly11 · 20/01/2026 21:42

Yep. And a few more you haven't mentioned.

SocksAndTheCity · 20/01/2026 21:43

Yes I could, but my idea of a 'formal work presentation' may differ from others given that I'm not entirely sure what one is. If it's like a meeting then yes.

There would likely be a fair bit of crossover too Smile

pinkspeakers · 20/01/2026 21:44

Yes. Pretty much. Maybe not very formal work clothes, but certainly as formal as I am every likely to need. Might struggle with a traditional funeral in the summer. The funerals I have been to recently have all had a much more relaxed dress code. I could do a smart, conservative all black autumn/winter outfit but summer would be harder.

StasisMom · 20/01/2026 21:44

Yes but they wouldn’t be exactly what I’d want to wear, if that makes sense. But really the only things I’m lacking are a ski suit and a ball gown.

notacooldad · 20/01/2026 21:44

Yes,
Ive got my more than enough for all those occasions, especially walking, gigs and regular working from home.

2026IsMyYear · 20/01/2026 21:41

What i'm short on is is nice casual saturday mooching around the city / lunch type clothes

That’s what I mainly have, I lack evening going out clothes.

tarheelbaby · 20/01/2026 21:46

Umm, yeah, I can cover all those eventualities. I have some basics to which I can add accessories and I have plenty of shoe options.

(Did you read the thread about a 'country walk to a pub' first date and she was planning white skinny jeans and red Hunters?)

Mirrorx · 20/01/2026 21:46

I could find something that would do, but it might be years (decades) old and if I cared much about the particular event, and had time I might be looking at other options.

pinkspeakers · 20/01/2026 21:47

My clothes have merged a bit in the last few years. I don't every buy work clothes that I wouldn't also wear outside work eg to meet friends. I think it has improved both my work wardrobe and my outside of work wardrobe and made them both feel bigger. I might wear them slightly differently (shoes, jewelery, but I must like them enough and feel relaxed enough in them to wear them more widely.

WorriedRelative · 20/01/2026 21:47

Absolutely, with ease, and I could do black tie too. Many of those events I have suitable options in multiple sizes.

I think people are too quick to declutter and don't retain things for those just in case events.

SquirrelFan · 20/01/2026 21:48

I could do many of these, but really struggle with going out clothes. I wish someone would do the shopping for me! I can never find things that look good on me but I'm not an ogre, surely there must be clothes out there that would flatter and be suitable! Also as pp mentioned, my feet are very hard to please, so shoes are a challenge...

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 20/01/2026 21:49

2026IsMyYear · 20/01/2026 21:39

That's the one i'm most prepared for, despite dustinct lack of actual parties 🤣

I'm fatally attracted to beautiful going out clothes. Always have been

Me too, I lost weight and bought some beautiful clothes on vinted, all new or very good , me and em, Reiss, max mara etc and now have far too many clothes, particularly going out clothes, and I don’t go out enough to justify it. 😂

itsthetea · 20/01/2026 21:50

Yes I could dress for all those even though my wardrobe isn’t exactly huge

for a date to impress - I’d wear normal clothes as I don’t have time for people who don’t get me and dressing up isn’t me. And that would be my gig outfit as well. Don’t change for a gig

probably the same outfit for the funeral , work presentation , fancy bar and posher than jeans dinner

have loads of outdoor gear

2026IsMyYear · 20/01/2026 21:50

What other 'events' is it worth thinking about when shopping?

I'm finding it useful to think about my clothes in these terms now as it helps me see gaps. Of course there are overlaps & crossovers etc

In my life i mostly need clothes for:

Day to day office job

Dressier work clothes for presentations, conferences, external meetings etc. I'm senior level in creative sector so style may be more of a focus

Weekend cothes (weak on the daytime side here)

Dinner / drinks / city breaks with close group of v stylish female friends

Dinners / drinks / parties wide lr groups friends

Evening work events (not formal )

Date nights with dh

Funerals (unfortunately)

Holidays (almost always urban / cities as not into beaches)

I have several ball gowns due to a job from years back where I needed to attend black tie events. In saying that they’re all 10 years old at least but hopefully classic enough to be ok.

I tend to hold on to that type of thing, it’s more the formal work meeting/fancy night out that I’d struggle with. I have maybe one fancy top and plain black trousers for a night out.

ResusciAnnie · 20/01/2026 21:51
  1. A funeral - yes but if it had to be all black then no, everything I have that is all black would be too glitzy
  2. A formal work presentation / meeting - not relevant to my life so no
  3. A party in a fancy bar or similar - yes
  4. Dinner & drinks where its dressier than jeans - yes
  5. A gig - yes both performing and watching
  6. A walk in the countryside / forest etc - yes
  7. A date where you'd like to impress / make an effort - yes
  8. Regular work from home or office day that's not pjs or gym gear - yes
DramaAlpaca · 20/01/2026 21:52

Yes, just about. I've far too much stuff so I'm sure I could find something for most occasions in my wardrobe.

Giggorata · 20/01/2026 21:52

Yes, I could dress for each of these occasions, and more.
I do have a ridiculous amount of clothes, although I got rid of loads after I retired.

firstofallimadelight · 20/01/2026 21:52

Yes
i unfortunately attended a funeral recently so definitely have that.
I have a number of dresses that are fine for work or going out. I’d wear jeans to a gig. I have walking gear.

partytimed · 20/01/2026 21:53

all I really could do on that list is a walk in the forest and WFH. Could manage drinks if jeans were allowed!

MaybeItWasMe · 20/01/2026 21:53

Yes to all of those events. That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t be browsing Vinted for something else though…!
