for out out in a northern city tomorrow night. Food, drinks and inevitable dancing in gay bars.

Was originally thinking little black dress + heels but have decided I want to be more comfortable.

Will I do?

I love it all! I’ve got 80s sequinned tops from Frank Usher which are wonderfully sequinned. Saw one on eBay just now for £70. I didn’t pay that much.

Blondiney · 19/12/2025 19:43

Swap out the top for a white vest and it's pretty much my 90s uniform. I'd still wear it now if I ever ventured out 😁

I know! All of my high heel wearing friends have been wiped out by their opioid addiction. I'm only here because I am tall and could never find trousers long enough for heels.

Post of the week!

Depending on which city, I might ditch the coat.

Like the rest of the outfit, though.

The outfit’s ok - although as a teen in the 70s I probably wore all the items at some stage. Shame about the ‘dancing in the gay bars’ bit though - unless you are actually gay! Otherwise it smacks of ‘let’s all go and gawp at the gays down Canal Street for lols’ mentality.

This is such bollocks. Gay bars also depend on the straight pound.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 20/12/2025 07:49

Very vintage.
I don’t like the top. I’d probably wear a plain sequinned top or velvet blouse instead of that.
I think wearing jeans for a night out at Christmas is very basic so you need a glamorous top but not that one.
Fur coats are back in fashion too.
The shoes are very Christmas party so they are fine.

Really? I am straight and have had many a good night on Canal Street. Not gawping, just enjoying the fun and welcoming vibe.
I was also a teen in the 70s, comments like yours annoy me as they contribute to the bad press the older generations receive on MN.

Floisme · 20/12/2025 09:41

I've also been to gay clubs when young. It was nice to be able to dance without being hassled but, if I'm honest, I also enjoyed going because it was
1970-something and it made me feel super progressive and sophisticated. I never once thought about whether the club regulars minded me and my friends - all straight - being there. Maybe they didn't, they certainly didn't seem to but the point is, I never asked and I regret that now.

Anyway I'm conscious the op wasn't asking about that. I still think it's a great outfit. It pains me to see anything more recent than 1965 being described as vintage but that's my problem.

DottyLottieLou · 20/12/2025 09:48

Great, but are those shoes comfy?

blondebombsite13 · 20/12/2025 09:59

I’m not a fan of those types of shoes but otherwise love it, especially the top. Have a great night

wornoutjeans · 20/12/2025 10:04

Love it , top is gorgeous , fear you may have sore feet with these shoes though !

MrsZiggywinkle · 20/12/2025 10:06

I love the top!

If you feel good and comfortable that’s all that matters.

ViciousCurrentBun · 20/12/2025 10:09

What you need is a little face glitter, my sisters and I had little shaped stamps you could press in to glitter and stamp on your cheek.

Love it op, wish I was still out gadding about, have a lovely evening.

Sunshineo · 20/12/2025 10:14

@BootMaker I haven’t but will have a look! Thank you

billiongulls · 20/12/2025 10:24

Love the top! The shoes would cripple me though.

billiongulls · 20/12/2025 10:28

BootMaker · 19/12/2025 05:38

Sneakers would fuck that up.

It needeth gold platforms.

Why are heels so derided? Sometimes they make an outfit just right. We don't have to handmaid's tale it all the time.

It's ok to glam it up occasionally.

AND MEN WEAR HEELS TOO.

(See the late and sadly lamented Prince and Bowie for 'fucking stylish men in heels').

Edited

I think they are derided because they are so uncomfortable. And it's 99% women who wear them.

Followthesunshine · 19/12/2025 11:54

I'm not sure I follow this line of thinking that going to a gay bar involves some sort of sequin wearing uniform dress-up. Gay people wear t-shirts as well you know.

Have you ever been to Canal Street?

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 20/12/2025 12:06

I have to laugh at all the pearl clutchers who think we need to stomp about in band teeshirts and sensible shoes and avoid gay bars unless we are gay. What world are they living in!?

Yes I have lived in Manchester
