Nobody cares what you wear

Ive seen this phrase countless times on S&B in response to a question about what to wear for a special occasion or holiday. How do you know nobody cares? If people did care how would they let you know?

I'm perplexed by London as being the place that leads the way - I usually see much better dressed women in certain regional centres of the UK.

I don't think London leads the way. As a PP said, the style here is generally laid back. But it is a capital city, and that's why ppl outside London feel the need to dress up. They may be going to a big event there.

Indeed and many of us live very rural or suburban lives. I live in a tiny village, so any visit to a major city is an event for me and I enjoy the opportunity to get out of my smelly yard clothes. Planning my outfit is part of the anticipation and the rare chance to wear clothes that weren't purchased entirely for their warmth and practicility. I find clothes fun and do care what people, including myself, wear. Which is the whole point of the Style and Beauty board. If you really don't care what people wear, don't come on this board.

I do think anyone who posts “nobody cares” on threads where someone does not have something to wear to an event (wedding, funeral, party) and need to buy something deserve to just be deleted. How is it helpful to keep commenting on threads where someone needs to buy an outfit?

Also if you are on a thread about latest trends, saying “nobody cares” on a thread with 20+ people who clearly do care just makes you look thick, but it generally successfully derails the thread onto focussing on why posters care and why it’s ok if they want to care. Can we start adding “don’t engage with the ‘nobody cares’ twats” on the S&B posts?

Well said. And I totally agree with you about the women shouldn’t spend money on themselves. The handbag threads are a case in point.
It’s been interesting to hear from posters explaining the phrase ‘nobody’s cares’ is used to reassure.
The way it’s worded does seems rather sneering to me. Perhaps ‘nobody will mind what you wear’ sounds better.

Most people don’t dress very well, aren’t innately stylish.
Most people don’t have access to expensive clothing.
And plenty of those who do, have no idea how to dress.
There are a few who know how to look good. I’m not one.
I look fine (and nobody cares. Except me) and I’m comfy.
But I enjoy the stylish people, I care what they’re wearing.

It's just a comment from erstwhile Mean Girls at school who have graduated into Mean Girls on Mumsnet who have nothing better to do than cut other women down. It's rampant across all the boards and talk topics sadly.
