in an emergency I will accept a DB jacket with a nipped in waist. But only in an emergency mind.

I think double breasted tends to look better with long coats rather than jackets, the weight keeps the front smoother and elongates the shape. Whereas jackets tend to ride up a bit or crumple at the front while adding width where most people don’t want to. I also agree about not being great for bigger busts.

Agreed I bought a long hounds tooth coat which I absolutely love.

RomainingCalm · 07/11/2025 16:30

I think there's some DB clothes swapping going on (like the Sewing Bee transformation challenge) as William appears to be wearing one of Albert's old jackets and Charlene has repurposed one that belongs to Edward.

Vitriolinsanity · 07/11/2025 20:38

Not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but as we are the same age, same colouring and have the same hair that doesn’t really do a ponytail I could do a reasonable Sophie DOE stand in.

Double breasted jacket alert
Prince William in front of the Christ The Redeemer statue in Rio...
Ok, fashionable? Retro? Avante garde? Naff?.
If it's good enough for the entire (stylish) Borbon family?

oh dear. You can almost hear the horn pipe.

Sidebeforeself · 08/11/2025 08:16

The Times today has an article headlined “How Prince William made the double breasted jacket cool again”

I’m planning a protest march to Buckingham Palace..who’s with me?!

Just seen some footage of Princess Anne arriving in Sydney and you'll never guess what she too is wearing...

Maireas · 08/11/2025 09:51

Noooo!

At least hers is probably the original from several decades ago 😊

Yes, I was about to say the same. It sort of confirms her wardrobe approach.

<plays devil’s advocate>

This doesn’t look bad at all. But it’s well fitted, heavy fabric and he’s standing still for the camera. DB can go wrong in lighter fabrics, any scenario where you are moving your arms (including walking) and the fit is crucial

I can’t seem to find a good photo of it, but I suspect that the velvet jacket he wore at the actual Earthshot ceremony is double breasted as well 😱

Yes, that’s the one I just posted.

I also think with DB that the exact length and angle of the lapels makes a big difference.

Three sets of buttons / high lapels = bad
Two sets of buttons / low lapels = much better

Paging Derek Guy.....! I love his stuff on X, especially his massive crush on Felipe's style.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 08/11/2025 12:03

I quite like the velvet jacket but the blue one is not good and seems better suited to Charles aboard the royal yacht in the 80s! William is only 43 so not sure why he's adopted the style of someone much older.

ExcellentDesigns · 08/11/2025 20:18

Catherine at the Remembrance service tonight. Can't see the dress very well but not keen on the white collar

BlouseyBrowne · 08/11/2025 20:22

Kate’s puritan collar is so dowdy.

ExcellentDesigns · 08/11/2025 20:31

It's very Victorian governess

Maireas · 08/11/2025 20:38

I'm not keen on the collar, but her hair looks lovely. Cams and Sophie both look good. I thought Sophie was carrying a fan, but it's a clutch bag. Nice.

The wearing of black in that lighting every year, means I can never pick out any details on the outfits.

Sidebeforeself · 08/11/2025 20:39

I know it’s a solemn event so not a time for high fashion , but Kate’s dress is pretty awful. Her hair and makeup are fab though.

Sophie looks a bit dishevelled in some of the photos but I love her bag.

BlouseyBrowne · 08/11/2025 20:57

I wonder if Sophie uses a hairstylist? Her hair never looks ‘done’.

RomainingCalm · 08/11/2025 21:04

Not a fan of the collar on Kate’s dress. It’s a similar style to some of her other Alessandra Rich dresses but not sure this version works as well as, for example, the polka dot dress. Her hair and make up look good and it’s nice to see George there.

I thought Sophie looked a bit tired but she seems to have been doing a huge amount of travelling lately. Camilla looks great. Would quite like to see a better picture of the Duchess of Gloucester and also Victoria Starmer - both dresses look lovely.

Watching now. Hannah Waddingham's dress is wow, I'd like to see all of it not just the top half.

Agree about Sophie's hair. It looks fine and is a tricky length to put up I imagine.
