Are these dresses ok for autumn weddings?!

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 12:28

Losing my mind, must be the 20th pair of dresses I’ve tried on. I have a wedding first weekend in October, and first weekend in November - same guests so can’t really wear the same dress. Anyway.. going to wear both with a sparkly pair of strappy heels and a black cardi/cover up for shoulders. Yes or no?

First time I’ve worn anything remotely ‘nice’ since having DD a couple of years ago so feeling out of my depth.

I prefer the v neck one, it suits your figure.

The one shoulder dress looks more like an evening party dress to me and it could look odd with a cover up/cardi.

lrjh · 12/09/2025 12:48

Agree with PP. you have a lovely figure, I don’t think the first dress is wedding like. The second really suits you but again, perhaps not for a wedding.

hopefully someone can give some ideas. Perhaps vinted for coast or phase eight type dresses?

depends where wedding is as well I suppose.

duckduckgo13 · 12/09/2025 12:50

I think the first one is very nice. The second one is too casual for a wedding IMO.

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 12:52

Thank you, I was wavering on them because they still don’t feel right. Both are wedding hotels, nothing overly fancy but definitely occasion wear. Struggling with a new figure, and an autumn wedding! I find summer much easier, but all the colours are darker.

Also one is my SIL and one is my BIL so I’m going to no doubt be in some photos, need to look right 😅

Its hard to see the detail in the pic but are they both black. If yes, then no- neither is suitable.

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 12:55

Sorry, it is hard to tell in the lighting. These are the dresses:

What’s your budget and what sort of colours suit you? You don’t have to go dark just because it’s an autumn wedding - though agree pastel florals might not work.

SausageRoll2020 · 12/09/2025 12:59

They both look black in the photos which is generally considered inappropriate for weddings.
They also look more like party dresses and suitable for wedding guests.

What's your budget? People might be able to share some good suggestions of shops to look at.

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 12:59

Ideally no more than £50 on a dress, so probably £100 total but happy to go a bit more. Just want something flattering that I can dance and eat in really. Quite annoying they are so close together or I think I could’ve got away with one dress! I have a silver sparkly clutch and sparkly strappy heels. Greens and blues suit me better - tend to stay away from anything pastel as I have fair skin.

DappledThings · 12/09/2025 12:59

Of course you can wear the same dress if you find one you like. I had 8 weddings in one year. Wore three dresses between them and one of them was my own. Nobody will care

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 13:00

@DappledThings yes I probably could but one is my husbands sisters wedding and the other is my husbands brothers wedding and they are only 4 weeks apart, so it would be nice to have a different dress for each.

SausageRoll2020 · 12/09/2025 13:02

Would you consider second hand? It would allow you to get better quality dresses within your budget? As unless you find an amazing sale bargain you'll struggle to find decent dresses at a £50 price point.

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 13:04

@SausageRoll2020 that’s a point - I could look on vinted.

OP posts:
minipie · 12/09/2025 13:16

this might be too short but worth a try as it’s £9 (!!) and so would free up budget for the other dress. Think the shape would suit you and colour is fab.

minipie · 12/09/2025 13:17

this is worth a try too

minipie · 12/09/2025 13:38

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 12/09/2025 13:32

Neither of them are for a wedding. First is too sexy - second is too casual.

This is nice https://www.self-portrait.com/products/aw25-navy-lace-embellished-midi-dress

Did you look at budget???

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 14:11

Yep the first one is definitely going back - still really enjoy wearing the second one though so may just keep that. @eqpi4t2hbsnktd wow that is gorgeous but ever so slightly out of budget 🤣

thanks @minipie! Happy to push the budget a bit, I’m not fixed on that price. Think a wrap type dress is more flattering on me these days.

OP posts:
EscapadeVelocity · 12/09/2025 14:45

The first looks great on you but I’d keep it for a different occasion.

What dress size do you wear? The second is pretty enough but a bit throw away, and not particularly elegant. This is only a few pennies more and much more swish. (Comes in other colours also.)

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 14:48

@EscapadeVelocity oh I do like that! I’m a 12-14, with a pooch I’d like to hide ideally..

peonym · 12/09/2025 14:51

I feel like these might not be the right vibe for SIL and BIL weddings. Note your budget - I wonder if you might get something nice on Vinted? I use it sometimes for occasion wear because none of us are wearing those types of dresses often!

minipie · 12/09/2025 14:54

Yes you look like an apple to me with good legs. I’d look for something short ish in your shoes, maybe with long sleeves to balance and for warmth. But maybe I just have leg envy 😆

DinoLil · 12/09/2025 14:54

Nah, imo neither are 'weddingy'.

Head off to Vinted to stretch your budget and get something more celebratory. Black is just meh.

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 14:56

Thanks everyone! Off I go back to the drawing board 😎
