Are these dresses ok for autumn weddings?!

Losing my mind, must be the 20th pair of dresses I’ve tried on. I have a wedding first weekend in October, and first weekend in November - same guests so can’t really wear the same dress. Anyway.. going to wear both with a sparkly pair of strappy heels and a black cardi/cover up for shoulders. Yes or no?

First time I’ve worn anything remotely ‘nice’ since having DD a couple of years ago so feeling out of my depth.

The one on the left. The one on the right could be worn to go supermarket shopping in. Metallic accessories would look great

This is a really dated, ageing dress. Just because it's a wedding, people don't have to suddenly start dressing like the Duchess of Wessex. I'm in my late 40s and literally none of my friends would wear that.

Agreed. My late mother would say it’s old fashioned and she was 80 when she died!

Matildahoney · 12/09/2025 21:35

If you like AX Paris, have a look at Girl in Mind, they do loads of different style wrap dresses, my last 3 wedding outfits have come from there.

Tidalwave9 · 12/09/2025 21:41

@Matildahoney I’ve just been scouring their website, gorgeous dresses!

I have just bought this one on vinted for cheap as chips.. so let’s see how that turns out 🤣

The first dress, I would say no - it's black and looks more like a ball gown. The second dress, I'd say yes if it was brightened up a bit with perhaps a red belt. Have you thought about what accessories you will wear, fascinator, jewellery?

Neither of them are for a wedding. First is too sexy - second is too casual.

This is nice https://www.self-portrait.com/products/aw25-navy-lace-embellished-midi-dress

Why on earth do people on mumsnet always suggest such ridiculous things... most people cannot afford a months rents on formal occasion wear they will be lucky to wear once or twice.

You can especially assume with even limited common sense that someone looking at a boohoo dress does NOT have £500 burning a hole in their back pocket.

To the OP, I like the wrap dress and its perfectly fine for a wedding. I have never been to a wedding where people wear crazy expensive dresses and/or formal wear. Most people dress like they are going on a dinner date so 'nice' (not sexy/clubbing wear) but not 'formal'.

I’m same size and similar shape and wore this to a wedding recently.

It was very comfortable and flattering. I’ve seen the same dress in lots of colours.

I got a beautiful Monsoon dress on vinted for £12 recently for a wedding. Got lots of compliments.

Hedgerowbustle · 13/09/2025 00:12

That's a nice dress you've chosen @Tidalwave9, I hope you like it when it comes.

Next seem to have quite a selection in your price range, with a good choice of colours for most.

Any of these to your liking?

Either of the navy blues might work?

I love the pale blue but may be too pale/summery?

Not a wrap, but quite sweet...

IME people still don’t wear black to weddings and it would be noticed and ‘not the done thing’. I don’t think it’s a rule that is old fashioned at all.

That looks perfect. Fingers crossed.

Epidote · 13/09/2025 08:01

They are a no for me. We are not having a nice beginning of September and I'm always over dress because I'm cold. The dress themselves are fine and you look great BTW.

distinctpossibility · 13/09/2025 08:35

I am probably a bit older than you (36) but I tend to get my dresses for weddings from a website called Pretty Kitty.

Downing4packsofharibo · 13/09/2025 09:00

I’ve just been to a wedding and wore a beautiful dress from hope and ivy, I bought it off vinted (sized up) and then after the wedding washed it and chucked it back on there. I priced it slightly higher, expecting to have offers but sold it the same day for £1 more than I paid.

this is definitely the way forward for one off dresses for me!

Especially when the OP has given a clear price range:

"Ideally no more than £50 on a dress, so probably £100 total but happy to go a bit more. "

Northumberlandisbest · 13/09/2025 09:21

I don’t know how much you want to spend but some High street stores such as Phase Eight, Hobbs and John Lewis do a free personal shopper service. This can be really helpful in getting fresh ideas and there’s no pressure to buy.

AntiBullshit · 13/09/2025 10:01

One shoulder dress is beautiful, the other is more every day

duckduckgo13 · 12/09/2025 12:50

I think the first one is very nice. The second one is too casual for a wedding IMO.

I agree.

ramonaquimby · 13/09/2025 11:14

Who makes the rules about wearing black to a wedding?! My bridesmaids wore black. I'd happily wear black to a wedding in 2025

Cinaferna · 13/09/2025 11:26

They looked black in the photos which put me off, but they are fine.

I'd pick out a velvet bolero/cropped jacket in one of the brighter colours of the dress to go with the figure hugging dress - there are loads on Amazon, Kelkoo etc around £20/25, with sheer tights and maybe glittery closed toe sandals.

With the dress that looks a little more casual, I'd probably be a bit daring with accessories and get sparkly dark navy tights, velvet ankle boots in navy and a fake fur shrug. All of these are pretty inexpensive online too.

I think greens and blues are ok but maybe mid colour rather than dark..I think lighter colours are better for a wedding. Not pastels but not dark.
