Androgynous wedding guest outfit for teen

Dd 14 has a wedding soon and we are struggling to find something both appropriate for the occasion and that she likes.
Her style is very 90’s baggy jeans and crop top/skater girl. She does like to do her hair and make up and wear jewellery so it’s not she isn’t “girly” in her own way she’s just very much not a long floaty dress girl.
We’ve tried pretty much every playsuit/skort available to buy in the uk it feels like but none were right.
she likes the look of a woman’s suit/tie and while I want her to be comfortable and feel like herself it’s a very traditional wedding with lots of old relatives and none of the the ones we have seen are quite right and I know she’d be p*ssed with people constantly commenting on her being dressed “like a boy” (please don’t make the whole thread about this comment I know what I mean)
Can anyone find the holy grail of something edgy and cool but also appropriate for this kind of wedding?

Urban Outfitters has lots of skater-y stuff, some girly, some not ....

this dress is v cool, although maybe too casual

this pinafore dress might work with a t-shirt underneath

a businesslike shirtdress from H&M

Weekday (formerly Monki, part of H&M group) might have some possibilities

The first dress and bag combination is giving me such Tammy Girl vibes circa 2004 😍 agree it’s too casual but very nostalgic!

Jumpsuit is a good idea

this one is casual material but striking enough to dress up for a wedding. Free People generally worth a look, especially as she is tall!

It so does!

I’ve worn trouser suits with a jazzy top to weddings before. I have also worn trainers. Though not both of these at the same time.

She needs to accept that either she dresses in a traditional way that won’t invite comment but she’s not comfortable in, or she wears something more “out there” that might (though not necessarily, or necessarily in a negative way).

You can’t always dress 100% as you’d like at formal occasions.

She sounds a lot like my adolescent dd.

Dd bought a mens' suit from Slaters, who tailored it to fit her. She sometimes wears it styled androgynous, sometimes styled feminine. It looks absolutely stunning.

Wide leg jumpsuit, wide leg trousers with a slim cut waistcoat or a shirt dress.

A beautiful tailored suit in a colour not associated with menswear would be perfect- sage or pink or powder blue or teal, maybe with a lace camisole under it instead of a shirt?
Maybe something like this from Jigsaw?

Oe this sage one from IKKS

I know right?! Probably why it appealed to me in the first place! 😁

So many nice suggestions on here. I would have died for that All Saints dress at age 18. And there are so many striking ones on the "waistcoat jumpsuit" Next link PP posted above.

Zara have this pink set, if she doesn't object to pink. Maybe with a camisole underneath? https://www.zara.com/uk/en/short-waistcoat-with-linen-flaps-p07968333.html?v1=457154874

I was going to say Blue Banana as my DD got her ‘prom’ dress from there. Also attitude clothing-

A wide legged slouchy trouser suit with matching waistcoat underneath would work? Androgynous but quite cool for a teenager I think. H&M has some options. Also look at Bershka and Zara.

mnahmnah · 27/08/2025 18:30

Either of those looks? Both on the Next website under waistcoats

In a very similar situation DD agreeded to a jersey jumpsuit in a plain colour. She wore it with Converse boots. It was navy, and short sleeved, from Crew Clothing. Similar to Joe Brown’s jersey jumpsuit.

I love all the waistcoat and wide trousers ‘co-ords’ I was at a wedding recently and a couple of guests were wearing them, they looked lovely.

DietQueen2023 · 27/08/2025 20:24

I’d go for a waistcoat and trousers in a funky colour.
