Androgynous wedding guest outfit for teen

Dd 14 has a wedding soon and we are struggling to find something both appropriate for the occasion and that she likes.
Her style is very 90’s baggy jeans and crop top/skater girl. She does like to do her hair and make up and wear jewellery so it’s not she isn’t “girly” in her own way she’s just very much not a long floaty dress girl.
We’ve tried pretty much every playsuit/skort available to buy in the uk it feels like but none were right.
she likes the look of a woman’s suit/tie and while I want her to be comfortable and feel like herself it’s a very traditional wedding with lots of old relatives and none of the the ones we have seen are quite right and I know she’d be p*ssed with people constantly commenting on her being dressed “like a boy” (please don’t make the whole thread about this comment I know what I mean)
Can anyone find the holy grail of something edgy and cool but also appropriate for this kind of wedding?

Okay, It’s a crap film, but have you seen Carrie as best woman in Sex and the City2? Basically, a female three-piece tuxedo, but with heels and a headdress. So how about a two or three piece suit, but with tailored trousers rather than baggy, some sort of sandals/strappy shoes, and something fab for her hair?

Zara have this pink set, if she doesn't object to pink. Maybe with a camisole underneath? https://www.zara.com/uk/en/short-waistcoat-with-linen-flaps-p07968333.html?v1=457154874

Love this. Especially the trousers.

Edit... sorry, shorts..which would look insane on me, but on a 14 year old, could look very cool.

Mulledjuice · 27/08/2025 21:26

A trouser suit with a waistcoat with nothing underneath, or with a crop top or corset top.

Have a look at:

Hell Bunny
Killstar
Disturbia

My baggy jeans and black hoodies only DD14 had this same issue for a close family wedding last year and went for a hot pink M&S suit! Wide leg trousers white plain top underneath and white trainers. The pink colour helped it look more girly and little bit of make up curled hair kept it ‘occasion’. No way could I have got her in a jumpsuit, shorts or anything non sleeved!

Ellaone · 27/08/2025 22:35

I had a friend wear pretty much this to a wedding but with a long sleeve top, silver jewellery and black fancy hair clip they looked amazing- might be a bit wintery though 🤷‍♀️

I'd bought a sequin trouser suit in monsoon a couple of years back which would fit the requirement of obviously feminine but also quite masculine- they dont seem to have anything similar at the moment.

I'd definitely vote for a take on a suit- out of a more feminine fabric, female cut and colour.

Also love the zara outfit above; that looks fab!

DD wore something like this for her prom. I had the waistcoat made for her by a seamstress because of the fit, but she wore it with wide legged trousers, a pretty shirt from Mint Velvet and Dr Martens. I think that style
of tie (and the pretty shirt!) makes it look more feminine without being girly-girl.

I love it!

Zara do a nice jumpsuit that looks like a trouser waistcoat set.

DahliaDreaming · 28/08/2025 07:58

Search women's tailoring on m&s? There are loads of waistcoat and trousers options that look cool but feminine, could wear with trainers too

Stravaig · 28/08/2025 09:28

Echoing the waistcoat and trousers suggestions, eg. Wrap has this linen combo in several summery colours, which might help evoke wedding attire for the more judgmental traditional guests.

I would use black trousers so that she is comfortable and then dress up her top half in something feminine and wear the jewellery she likes. It doesn’t have to be a matching outfit - just use trousers as a blank base.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/08/2025 09:39

It would be helpful if OP could come back and comment on links so far. My instinct is that the Disturbia/Hell Bunny/more ‘adult’ brands such as Phase Eight or Reiss are likely to be way off the mark. And people keep linking to dresses when the girl has said she doesn’t want to wear a dress.

minipie · 28/08/2025 09:59

Yes given than teen fussiness takes lots of different forms, it is hard to know what might be acceptable to this particular teen!

Isometimeswonder · 28/08/2025 10:20

I never wear dresses or skirts.
I am considerably older but I always wear trousers suits to smart events.
Eg in a bold colour not black/navy/work style.
With silky top or vest, not shirt.
Boots, sandals even trainers go with it, and accessories as you like!

This is the best thing suggested and age appropriate, the rest are quite mumsy .

Also lovely. Looks like Zara have some great options

Next have bright coloured women's suits (pink, blue, yellow) with a choice of wide trousers or shorts and waistcoats as well as jackets.

My DD has a similar style but was younger when we went to a wedding (12). I bought her the M&S 'mini me' (terrible name but lovely product) boys suit jacket and trousers in baby blue - they go up to an age 16. Great quality for the price, but no waistcoat. My DD wanted to go for the 'androgynous female footballer collecting an award' look so wore hers with a white shirt and pale pink tie, plus brand new white airforce ones. You could team with light coloured brogues if it needed to be shoes and not trainers.

I don’t like the word ‘mumsy’ but I agree with the sentiment.

It would also help if we knew where the dd usually shops.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I would definitely look at Hollister (preferably their sale stuff for value) https://www.hollisterco.com/shop/uk/p/hollister-livvy-low-rise-baggy-pants-58860840-1005?categoryId=85815&faceout=model&seq=03.

HarryVanderspeigle · 28/08/2025 12:16

I was her in the 90's and went to a wedding in a skirt and DM boots. While she doesn't want the skirt, I would recommend the boots as a good accessory to androgny.
