Anyone still wear tights with dresses in winter?

I haven't seen much of it out and about for years, my brain can't picture it as easily now!
I do love a warm jersey dress in colder months although a few are now retired at the back of wardrobe. Perhaps they don't work as well with modern accessories, etc?

I started wearing cord trousers mostly in winter but am getting a bit bored.

I wear tights all year round. Sheer in summer and mostly plaques in the winter. Makes my legs look lovely.

? Where do ypu live that you don't see women wearing tights and drrsses in winter?

This. Who wears bare legs in winter?

summerskyblue · 12/08/2025 19:15

I hate tights. Uncomfortable, itchy and always seem to be falling down...

Instead I wear boots with skirts and dresses.

I was the same for years, but I actually find dresses with merino wool tights are better than trousers when it's cold and muddy.

They're warmer and you don't need to tuck tights into wellies.

I did actually buy some skirts to wear for autumn for the first time ever so will give that a go thanks.

We all hate those types of tights

I buy Snag tights though they don't do that

mondaytosunday · 12/08/2025 20:22

Uh sure. My DD has taken to wearing her old woollen school tights with her mini skirts at uni (up north).

Onelifeonly · 12/08/2025 20:28

I've never liked tights though in my youth I suffered them - wearing a skirt was much more common then. Most of my colleagues wear trousers or leggings, and some wear the latter with dresses in cooler weather. I mostly only wear dresses in summer with no tights but occasionally wear winter dresses - with thicker tights or leggings. Can't stand the way thin tights feel / fall down / cling to a skirt (yes I have one waist slip which I wear about once biannually). I am so glad that now trousers are considered ok to wear in most situations as that suits me just fine.

I cannot tell you when I last put on a pair of tights, and I'm not sorry about it! Must be twenty years?

But what do you do in winter for skirts and dresses! I’m intrigued as I loathe
tights but love skirts!

Tipeetommeey · 12/08/2025 20:35

I really think some posters aren’t quite sure what opaque tights are…. They’re the thick ones not the see through ones

I was wondering the same thing.

I live in black tights and midi dresses in winter, I know so many women are the same. Baffled by your question.

FurForksSake · 12/08/2025 21:12

With a maxi dress in winter you can wear a good chunky sock and boots, I think that looks quite good. Anything shorter needs tights, the chunkier the better for me. I think some of the lower denier tights look a bit dated, so they’ll probably be fashionable this autumn winter.

dudsville · 12/08/2025 21:26

Black tights feel wrong to me and don't go with my clothes. I'm wear dark grey. And I've finally bought a silk slip so that I can wear my dresses in winter without the skirts riding up my tights a I walk. Dresses are extremely comfortable, and I have two that are made of a cotton and wool mix. Can't wait to get into them!

RuthW · 12/08/2025 21:38

What else would you wear on your legs with a dress in winter?

EmotionallyWeird · 12/08/2025 21:39

Not thin tights, but I do quite like wearing black or colourful opaques with dresses in winter. I like Snag tights and M&S sometimes have some fun colours too, although they probably haven't got them in yet.

AtomicBlondeRose · 12/08/2025 21:45

I was very surprised last week in London to notice no women with shorter skirts and bare legs at all. Either maxi/midis or short with black tights. In boiling hot weather! It’s bare leg season in Yorkshire even but the black tights were out in Central London.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/08/2025 21:53

Oh don't be so obtuse, I mean everyone here tends to wear jeans or trousers ffs.

I saw several young women wearing black, sheer tights in central Edinburgh.

I saved this image from Instagram just today…
I have a bin of tights black navy grey burgundy I have been hanging onto for when they become more stylish again. I don’t like a really opaque tight I prefer some sheerness to them even in black/ grey. Tights make it all work…warmth hold the tummy skirt slips easily over them and boots zip up easily. If yours fall down you are wearing the wrong size or old tights

I love tights and dresses in the autumn and winter, it's such an easy outfit.

Never black tights though, I prefer grey or navy for work, the brighter the better for outside of work.

Magpie50 · 13/08/2025 05:42

TBF I dont see many women in dresses anytime of year round here. It tends to be those over 60ish.
I cannot wait for autumn though to get all my dresses out. I can't do bare legs because of varicose veins so as soon as the weather turns I'll move from opaque tights to thermal ones. Then in winter leggings and thermal leggings.
I just love layering cute summer dresses with tights, cosy cardigans or fabulous coats in the cooler weather.

user1476613140 · 13/08/2025 14:45

Yes, just recently bought dresses to team up with tights and boots. Mainly for winter and autumnal weather.
