Anyone still wear tights with dresses in winter?

I haven't seen much of it out and about for years, my brain can't picture it as easily now!
I do love a warm jersey dress in colder months although a few are now retired at the back of wardrobe. Perhaps they don't work as well with modern accessories, etc?

I started wearing cord trousers mostly in winter but am getting a bit bored.

Of course - and so do lots of people where I work.

A favourite winter work outfit for me is a mini jumper dress and black tights. Don’t give a fuck if it’s a bit (or even a lot) dated.

I read somewhere recently that pencil skirts are supposed to be on the way back.

SemmaLina · 12/08/2025 14:34

Dress or skirt and jumper , tights and boots are my winter favourites

Actually I find dresses/skirts and tights far more comfy than trousers.

Nah, I hate tights. Dresses are ok if they are loose floaty summer ones with bare legs but not otherwise.

LostInClothes · 12/08/2025 14:34

So what colour tights are people wearing?

I WFH so don't need any kind of uniform, but I do walk a lot, so would preefer an outfit that would be easy to match a coat to!

They are everywhere in our office. It’s a bit of a work winter uniform.

Same here, all ages, always flats- ballet pumps, Mary Janes, brogues, loafers and boots.

Depends on my outfit I have a drawer of them.

For darks I'll do dark green or brown or sometimes navy but with caution so it doesn't look school uniform.

I have bright colours too

The colours will depend on your wardrobe pallet. I don't like very muted or "muddy" colours so I have no teals or mustards or rusty oranges or burgundy, but if they're the kind of colours you like generally then get that type of colour for tights

I think dresses and skirts with tights is fine as long as the boots are modern and the length is right. I agree that longish midis and tights are in. Above knee dresses? Not really

Edited

Never chose your lengths by what's trending

It's your shape not what's in that'll make you look good or bad in different lengths.

I will never look good in longer dresses or skirts.

I'll always go for somewhere between a mini and knee length max

No matter how on trend a long skirt is I'll never pull it off.

LadyRoughDiamond · 12/08/2025 14:59

I wear black/coloured opaque a in winter, but do tend to favour these with boots because I’m getting a bit fed up with baggy/wrinkly bits around my ankles. I clear need better tights

MeganM3 · 12/08/2025 14:59

No, I don’t. Haven’t done for at least 5 years.

SmashingGemini · 12/08/2025 14:59

I absolutely love mini jumper dresses and warm tights in Autumn/Winter! So cosy, more comfortable and warm than trousers. New Look usually have a good selection of affordable options.

Cranberryavocado · 12/08/2025 14:59

Yes, but not opaque. The fully black ones with some boots and a jumper dress or work dress.

Black, navy, grey, green, burgundy, purple red.

LostInClothes · 12/08/2025 15:07

Sorry, i meant those kind of thick, wool tights not semi transparent!

Lightsfall · 12/08/2025 15:09

I wear tights for warmth, but I don't love the look. TBH you wouldn't see much of them, as if I'm wearing a dress in tights weather, I'd have knee length boots on.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 12/08/2025 15:09

SoScarletItWas · 12/08/2025 14:06

Me too! I’ve never got the knack of wearing shoes without tights. Sandals of course. Trainers with no-show liner socks. But a proper shoe always rubs and makes my feet feel sore and sweaty if I don’t wear thin tights.

Where I am there's loads of visible ankle socks, with all shoe types. I love it- the bare ankle look looks a bit daft to me, especially when it's cold

That's what I meant too.

Yes, but not opaque. The fully black ones with some boots and a jumper dress or work dress.

That’s literally what opaque means - not see through.

LostInClothes · 12/08/2025 15:24

yes i am mixed up, forgetting my deniers!

Where are people getting their woolly tights from, and do they bunch around the ankles too? Yes, I am obsessed with the ankle thing.

ThatCyanSheep · 12/08/2025 15:42

I do. All the time.

Oldraver · 12/08/2025 15:46

Yes I do sometimes wear tights with dresses, it depends on the length of the dress

I wear a lot of Lady V Lyra dresses with long boots so can get away with long knee length socks

SmashingGemini · 12/08/2025 15:46

M&S sell woolly tights, usually in black/navy/grey. Also White Stuff if you want colours.

KitsyWitsy · 12/08/2025 15:49

I wear black or grey opaques all the time!

LostInClothes · 12/08/2025 16:07

What about fabrics/pattern?
I am finding a lot of jersey florals and not much else..
