Which slippers do you wear in the office?

I suppose it's best to go for black? I saw a nice pair of closed Birkenstocks but they're white with a pattern on....I guess they won't go with anything! Crocs seem a bit clunky for the office, although some of my colleagues do wear them. Are the Birkenstock clogs less so? Not sure what to look for tbh, shoes always look large on me as I have big feet. I usually wear dark jeans or dark linen trousers.

I was going to say the same thing as @BlackAmericanoNoSugar. DHs family from same region also call all slip on shoes slippers. Was once very confused as to why slippers were banned from an event with a dress code. Turned out they meant crocs, flip-flops, sliders etc and no one is wandering around in fluffy slippers! Obviously OP isn't in tropical Asia if she's wearing snow boots but slippers mean different things in different places.

Sorry for all the confusion! I call footwear that is worn indoors slippers. It had never actually crossed my mind that some people consider crocs to be proper shoes 😳 Birkenstocks and similar are what my MIL has been wearing as her slippers for the last 20 years - it's only recently that people (apart from the odd one or two who you saw wandering around in them with big wooly socks in mid winter) seem to be wearing them as sandals.

You still havent said what country you are in, in the UK slippers are a specific type of footwear not a generic word for indoor shoes and women wearing slippers outside of the house belong to a demographic that does not have positive connotations

Now I'm really curious about where you live. Birkenstocks have been worn as sandals for as long as they have existed. And Crocs were originally boating shoes. Neither were designed to be indoor only.

Jeez I’d forgotten all about this but a long time ago I had an interview at a company where they were all wearing slippers & several people in the office had cardigans on the back of their chairs that I bet never went home for a wash. One of the questions was how would I cope with the MD’s untidiness, then they showed me a crazy spaghetti of cords and wires under his desk plugged into extension cables which was actually very unsafe. I turned the job offer down obviously.

What a baffling thread 😂

So what's your question? Is it basically you want to know what shoes people are wearing in the office? Your mention of snow boots also made me wonder where you live.

I haven't yet seen anyone wearing crocs in the office either.

NewbieYou · 08/08/2025 23:54

I don’t… I’ve never known anyone wear slippers at work. Slippers are for home.

I wear fluffy bunny ones. Nobody takes you seriously in the legal profession otherwise.

Yet another thread where I wish MN had not taken away the laugh reaction.

I have very much considered wearing slippers in my NHS clinic because my arthritic feet hurt and Im on the countdown to retirement. They would have to be black though and not obviously slippers. Slipperish would be OK.

I can comprehend and probably would tacitly be allowed to wear rubber or plastic slip ons / Crocs in the summer to get to and from work as we get typhoons and massive thunderstorms / flooding in Hong Kong but I would be expected to change into proper, presentable shoes once I had arrived.
