Which slippers do you wear in the office?

I suppose it's best to go for black? I saw a nice pair of closed Birkenstocks but they're white with a pattern on....I guess they won't go with anything! Crocs seem a bit clunky for the office, although some of my colleagues do wear them. Are the Birkenstock clogs less so? Not sure what to look for tbh, shoes always look large on me as I have big feet. I usually wear dark jeans or dark linen trousers.

I think I'm alone in wearing slippers in the office. I started in winter as my feet were cold, now I continue to wear them for comfort. For context, this is a relaxed office, and I'm the team leader.

Namechangedforthis25 · 08/08/2025 01:12

Which country are you based op?

this is a thing in parts of Scandinavia - no1 can be traipsing around in their snow boots all day

Loiste · 08/08/2025 09:54

Totally normal with indoor shoes/sandals where I am OP, black or brown Birkenstocks with closed toes tend to cover most needs

People don't go to work in their slippers. They go to work in normal shoes and then change in the office. At the moment it's not really an issue, (although I'm a bit concerned my trainers will start to smell if I wear them all day when it's so hot) but in winter when most people will be wearing snow boots to commute, it's normal to have a pair of slippers to change into.

I’m old. I’ve never ever worked
somewhere where I wore slippers in the office.

where do you live op? In the uk we don’t tend to get such extremes of weather that this would be an issue maybe more than a week or two of the year and even then, since I drive to the office, I’d just wear my normal shoes.

PickleSarnie · 08/08/2025 10:03

I wear these beauties. I find that dastardly penguin disguised as a chicken slippers project an air of gravitas in a professional environment.

I would love to do this.
My commute to work is a cross-country walk so i always travel in walking boots. I then change into an old pair of shoes I keep under my desk.
Slippers instead would be amazing!

Where on earth do you work ? wouldn't be allowed in my office due to health and safety plus totally impractical and not appropriate for work. wear bloody shoes. if in production or warehouse wear safety shoes

UK2HK · 08/08/2025 11:20

I've only worn flip flops or indoor slippers at one learning centre here in Hong Kong. It's quite common to require shoes off particularly where the children are extremely young because they will be sitting on the floormats. Otherwise, bare feet or socks.
Right now it's shoes.

Ironically, the pace that required slippers was hideously filthy.

It’s amusing to read all the snooty responses from people who forget that their experiences aren’t universal and that <shock> their city/country/culture isn’t the centre of the universe

OP I’d probably go for Birkenstock Bostons or similar

And many of us have asked the OP to clarify which country they are in! We might have 1st hand insight into what is commonly worn at work in those countries.

The fact the OP hasn't bothered to say, makes some of us rightly or wrongly assume it might be a wind up.

Not everyone asked for clarification. Some people reached straight for an arsey response

TicklishMintDuck · 08/08/2025 11:45

Is this another wind up like the car insurance one? I wear shoes at work.

Conkersinautumn · 08/08/2025 12:10

Most of my colleagues keep 'indoor shoes' at work because they walk to work, generally they're seasonal that would look part of the outfit if outside. We do have a no flip flops/ crocs rule because of some equipment on wheels and we dont want crushed toes (it gets ignored by those that also don't follow the 'office/ professional dress code' too) If a lot of your colleagues are wearing them I guess it's the norm. I wouldn't worry about how your feet look in them though! If it's about comfort just get what ticks that box.

I’ve worked in lots of offices all over Scotland and wearing slippers is not normal there, never seen it anywhere. Are you in the UK op?

OakAshRowan · 08/08/2025 12:49

People are getting hung up on the word slippers but, given that you said other people wear crocs or Birkenstock I suspect you just mean indoor shoes.

I cycle to work and change my footwear when I arrive. My office is pretty casual. Over the summer I've been wearing Birkenstock sandals. Autumn winter I would usually wear canvas trainers like Superga or converse. I quite fancy a pair of Birkenstock Bostons though so they seem like a good idea.

You've missed the point. It is isn't common in the UK to wear slippers at work, and the OP didn't clarify where she is lives/works. Nothing snooty in the responses. This is a Forum based in the UK, and, when people come from other countries, they normally add something like, 'based in New Zealand for context'.

EveryDayisFriday · 08/08/2025 13:37

Uggs. Classy me 😉

IngenTing · 08/08/2025 13:44

I wear birkenstocks with wool socks in the winter or in the summer lightweight vans. These are my indoor shoes or 'innesko'. I work in a government office, most of the indoor shoes are slip ons.

I'm in Norway, so it's considered completely feral to wear your dirty outside shoes inside :). That includes home, school, work, nursery, gym. I love this rule!

And it’s FAR more fun to presume that the OP is some kind of loser than presume she’s not from the UK, isn’t it?

I think my colleagues in Korea do this - you mention snowboots so I’m guessing you’re not UK!

I’d ask locally because this will just get you gold-plated, good-natured British piss taking!

In my (UK) office with a 95% British employee list loads of us have slippers! It's very informal though - people come in in gym wear etc. But it's nice in winter to have big warm comfy slippers to put on rather than uncomfy boots or wet trainers.

Okay, but one of the first responses was 'No, because I'm a grown up'. Not 'No, that's not typical where I live'. That IS snooty.

CompleteLackOfDisrespect · 08/08/2025 14:02

Slippers are for downtime, for relaxation.Wearing them at work sends the wrong message to yourself and others.

I'm assuming you're not in the UK. Nobody commutes in snowboots here, and I don't know anyone who changes into slippers at work.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/08/2025 14:09

Slippers might not even mean the same thing to the OP as it does to UK mumsnetters. My DH's family in Malaysia use the word slippers for what we would call flip-flops and mules, people go barefoot indoors in homes so the notion of slippers as soft indoor shoes to keep your feet warm doesn't exist. I know the OP isn't in the tropics as she mentions snowshoes, but 'slippers' as a shoe that you slip on rather than lace or zip up could still apply.

I don't know what's available where you are OP but if I wanted easy indoor shoes I would go for something with a memory foam footbed and preferably a back because I find myself gripping with my toes if it's a mule style shoe.
