I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

@NonHighStreetClothes I wear floral dresses, but plainly styled ones. I don't own any white trainers, but I do like a denim jacket for the pockets. It saves me from carrying a bag.

I think the problem is that we can't find plain stylish dresses easily, so we buy what is available.

I've had/have several dresses from Seasalt, and every one has been plain. I favour plain A-line linen dresses in summer (everyone else seems to be in denim shorts, but I have the most awful knees!) and I get some of them from Etsy sellers, mainly in Lithuania. It really isn't difficult to find plain dresses. I wear trainers because I walk a lot and they are comfortable, but never white, and I don't wear a denim jacket in summer as it's too hot here.

That moment when you click on “threads you’re on” and there are 500 messages for the thread you started after a couple of glasses of rosè….

Ok,going back to read! And apologies if I offended anyone. I could have also started an observational thread saying “There is so much traffic in the UK now, how do you not murder each other?!” but I thought that would be contentious. 😂

it's a look made popular by the Princess of Wales and influencers like Lydia Millen and Josie. It can look great depending on styling and pattern though for some frumpy and aging. I think the cut and pattern of the dress and how well it flatters your shape really does matter.Where I am in the UK it rains and is windy most of the year. As soon as I get a hint of sun I chuck on a dress. The weather is also very interchangeable here.

Dresses have been around forever. They wane in popularity occasionally, but are usually available in some form.

Too many pages to go through, but how old are you OP, and which country are you from?

I am also keen to understand where exactly you travelled to and around in the UK. I think you’d see less floral dresses in parts of London compared to suburbs.

Also, Me+Em is a good British designer brand…

Shorts and a tank can be classy, depending on how you’ve styled it, but for the most part, it’s quite dull…

Oh, I think you know you started a contentious thread.

Yes, I kind of agree. The tone was a bit insulting to me to be honest. I feel in defence of the British public, lol

MalagaNights · 02/08/2025 06:29

I love summer dresses.

Wearing them and seeing everyone in them.

Personally I love florals too. I always have, soft feminine style suits me.
But l also love plain cotton and linen or a geometric pattern and can see floral don't suit everyone.

I think the floral thing is so gloriously British though. It's summer gardens, Chelsea, Wimbledon, national trust, afternoon tea, champagne under a shady tree vibes. Which I love.

You should see my house 😉

And yes you probably don't see it so much in the USA which is very practical/sports wear, or Italy or Spain which is more pared back chic.
But isn't that wonderful? Us Brits wafting about in floral dresses just being us?

Gingerwarthog · 02/08/2025 06:38

@MalagaNights
yes, it is wonderful. Out at the pub last night and the place was a sea of colour with British women of all shapes and sizes and generations in bright prints and florals. It looked fabulous and like a celebration of Summer.

I would agree. It's fine to start a style discussion, or to notice different trends in different countries, but this was set out with a clear, negative and critical tone. Shame, I like a good style discussion!

I wear my clothes like l want to live my life, in full colour. Right down to my underwear.

l am not a 50 shades of beige kind of girl.

I love that! Winter is so long, everyone wrapped up in black and grey. It's so uplifting to see all the colour and pattern. Also, all the different styles.

Ahh a buzzy British pub garden on a summer evening with women in their summer dresses 💓🌹.

You can keep your tank top in NYC OP. (Lighthearted 😉)

Or, as we'd call it "a vest and shorts" 😉!

I'm with you, OP. It amazes me when I'm in a clothes shop these days and see how weird dresses have gone. All frilly and flouncy and flowery like a Laura Ashley fever dream.

I'm sitting it out in my trousers until the madness passes.

You don't think it's just... maybe a difference in clothing choices? Rather than "weird"? I just like the clothing variety that we see in the UK. If people want to spend the entire summer in shorts and a vest, fine. If not, also fine!

In the heat, exactly what I wear at home. Shorts and a tank. Smart shorts and a smart tank. Basically, as little as possible, a good fake tan and great shoes!

Right, so what about for work? I couldn't go into the office wearing that! Not everyone likes showing their legs, either.

I wish.

It was cold yesterday, and I went out in jeans and a jumper.

Assuming you’re a vaguely intelligent woman, you must have known that basically insulting the clothing choices of an entire nation would stir up a little bit of bad feeling?

Floisme · 02/08/2025 07:37

You are clearly unfamiliar with UK culture op, otherwise you’d have realised that you can be as rude as you like about people’s taste in jeans, trousers, shoes or bags but not about our flowery dresses. We are very, very protective of them. Don’t ask me why, not my rules.

Secondly - and I’m sure this has been said many times (sorry for not reading every post but life is short and the thread is long) Me and Em do appear to have a close relationship with our current government but I doubt many people away from this board are familiar with them, much less have the money to shop there. Are you sure you don’t mean M&S?

nicolamurrays · 02/08/2025 07:47

I feel very attacked having put on a flowery dress today 😂
